The way he writes songs is he sings incoherent lyrics to whatever he's playing and then later goes back and makes them into words. So he does it by feeling first, logic after

@@bloodbanks he's plays melodies and chords on a guitar. Sings nonsense lyrics that "sound" good and in a "good" melodic tone. Literal gibberish. Then when the song is taking its shape he goes back and listens to the gibberish he's singing and swaps it for words that sound just like it. It's more on the creative side than actually sitting down to specifically write lyrics. He does this with a lot of his songs and that's why a crap ton of his lyrics don't make alot of sense. He spoke on it in an interview article ages ago when describing how he wrote Emma forever ago I can't find it right now but it's not hard to find just Google it.

The whole album, but especially '29 #Strafford APTS' and '00000 Million' give me this one of a kind feeling. Not dreary, not uplifting, but rather that I'm coming to terms with my depression. It's not the light at the end of the tunnel, but maybe the way to get there. Then again, that's probably how Justin felt when writing this album. A masterpiece.

Nicole Eggenberger this whole album is great. I like to think of their eponymous album as the morning, then this album is the dusk, and for Emma forever ago is the night. Thematically this album doesn't feel as light and celebratory as "Bon Iver" but not as dark and sad as "For Emma, Forever Ago." It's somewhere in between.

I agree with you completely, but I think what these people mean is that most of those collaborations and projects were as Justin Vernon, and not as Bon Iver. Bon Iver is more typically slow guitars, high pitched voice and love songs. This album, however was different. I think that is what people mean when they say this isn't typical Bon Iver. It sure as hell is Justin Vernon and reminds me alot of his collabs with the artists you mentioned and Volcano Choir, but it isn't 'typical' Bon Iver, or atleast similar to the past two Bon Iver albums. Still absolutely amazing though.

Vintage Bon Iver. This song is easily one of my favorites on this album (second only to 666) because it's the ultimate combination of new Bon Iver and old Bon Iver. Remember when he could make you happy and sad at the same time with a guitar and nothing else? Well the game's changed and I'm all for it. I like it a lot more than I thought I would at first.

The Gilb i first heard this song, and this band on public radio, and I thought, I don't know if I like this or it's pure unadulterated genius. Thank heavens the DJ said who it was at the end, because it's definitely genius. What I love about music is that when you think you've found the best you're going to find, and start getting a bit bored with it, you find this.

Justin Vernon is so under appreciated. Who else writes such poetic, abstract lyrics as this? Really asking because I’d love to find more artists like this. I’ve never heard an artist write/sing so poetically. He’s light years ahead in touching, human emotions.
