Fun fact: While the word bonsai is of Japanese origin, the concept of this art form actually took root in China. Since the Yin and Zhou dynasties nearly 3,000 years ago, people in China have cultivated ornamental plants to imitate natural scenery within gardens - a craft known as penjing.

Love bonsai as an art form. Started my own journey 2 years ago. Getting our own mini forest established.

This narrator is completely wrong .. those old bonsai were collected in wild .. as most bonsai are collected or field grown to expedite results. Those old bonsai weren’t grown from seed, they were collected.. high quality can be achieved in easily 10 -20 years .. hardly as long as they say .. that is an outsiders view but not the views as those who actually practice it

and many people believe the japanese created the art of bonsai when in reality the chinese were doing it long before the japanese started

Yeah, there's a lot of misleading or missing information here. In the beginning when the narrator shows a tree and says that it only gets a millimeter thicker every decade, I'm like, so that tree is 4,000 years old? Definitely collected, lol.

Totally agreed. Not grown from seed but collected yamadori. I have been involved in bonsai for over 20 years, making bonsai ceramics. Akiyama San is a great guy and was partly responsible for me being able to get my work out to Japan for the modern pot competition at the Gafu Ten show in Tokyo in 2015.

Killing a tree and saying they are loving them like their pets ot children !Ridiculous, It is really a brutal activity. The worst thing you can do to a living being!!!

No sir, trees are not animals. Trees produce million of seeds each year and many saplings which eventually die due to environmental conditions. Bonsai also occur in nature, when trees are in hard terrain. So Bonsai trees are not tortured. Trees don't have sense of pain like animals, they have reflexes to adjust to survive in conditions they are. Besides with climate change and human destructions trees are getting destroyed, so Bonsai is good way to preserve trees genetic material and Bonsai tree can be regrown as normal tree if replanted in soil in its natural environment.
