The word "bonsai" actually translates to "tray planting." So the name refers to the method rather than any specific species of tree. I really like how even the leaves become miniature. I wish I could go study under her and become a bonsai master. It seems like a very zen career.

Cutting old roots, in order to make way for new roots hence preserving its youth and vitality. The philosophy of bonsai trees lol

"Vigor". Not "youth" and "vitality". Those two things are completely different from vigor.

@@Reub3 Technically, trees can regain their youth tho? You can take a cutting of a tree and grow it... then re-attach it to itself. And you've suddenly extended the lifespan of that particular tree. So, tree got the ingredient for immortality. I mean, there is a tree in US that has survived for over 10.000 years. To the point it looks like a forest.

The one left by the grandpa living in Meiji era is so beautiful that deeply attracts everyone who loves nature. It is still hard work for any self-confident expert to estimate which leaves on it are odd and to get rid of them .

No, he/she is right. "If that were my cat." You shouldn't use "was" because of using "if". It's called subjunctive. I suggest you to look it up.

Fun fact: While the word bonsai is of Japanese origin, the concept of this art form actually took root in China. Since the Yin and Zhou dynasties nearly 3,000 years ago, people in China have cultivated ornamental plants to imitate natural scenery within gardens - a craft known as penjing.

i love Japanese culture. i think it is so cool and smart that they revire their elders and the wisdom of those who came before them. its something the us is sorely lacking.. i also keep bosai trees and other plants in general. plants like my potted lemon tree i have been growing since the 4th grade, nearly 20 years, and even a seed i planted from that tree nearly 5 years ago now that i keep on the porch at my new house really makes me think about time differently. my mom kept my original tree at her house and loves it, so its fun to have a piece of that tree at my new house and because i live 1200miles away, it is like a piece of home and my childhood has come along with me in a weird way.
