I have been doing and teaching all this for almost 40 years - First book published 1985 second one in 1986, so I was ahead of my time. I was prabably the first person to expound the use of Hedging material and large trees for bonsai in the 1970s and everyone scoffed at me. Now see what's happening !!

Hi master chan been a year and a half since i last spoke to you. Glad your looking well and still giving valuable information for people. I would like to ask im about to save a 15 year old oak tree from the ground and would like your advice as to what to use once i get it out the ground. What would you use? soil or spagnam moss and where shall i keep it while it recovers from the move? Thank you for your time 🙏
@peterchan3100

Spring is the best time to dig it out.When you have got it out- just plant it in ordinary soil in a large pot. Oaks are very resilient. So dont worry. If you live in the temperate region you can still did it out now.

To be honest, I'd start by digging up seedlings or trees in parks. It's generally legal (but double check), free, and a much more satisfying experience. That being said, ficus, juniper, and maples are quite hardy in many environments, and relatively easy to grow. Basically, if you look at native trees near you or follow your USDA growing zone, you'll probably have good results.
