My grandfather,John L. Cooke, a Spanish-American Naval War Veteran (1898-1904) who was on leave in San Francisco, circa 1899-1900, when he and his shipmates went to see a prizefight! This fight was held on a barge & refereed by Bat Masterson! I don't recall the fighter's names, but this video recollected this story from my childhood! (I'm 75!)

How about the REST of the story ?!! Earp ends up in Los Angeles as the silent movie business thrives there, making friends with cowboy star Tom Mix, as Earp tells many he would like his life portrayed on screen someday. Mix tries to help an injured football player he liked from USC, who has lost his football scholarship, by getting him a job at the movie studio and even some bit parts. Mix decides the player needs coaching to be better on screen and has his friend Wyatt Earp help the new actor with his bearing, his mannerisms, his speech, and his persona so that his on screen portrayal is REAL. Mix persuades the actor to change his name to something more appealing to the public, and a legend is born...John Wayne. Years later, " The Duke" would say that when people saw him on the screen, they weren't watching John Wayne....they were watching Wyatt Earp !!

@ John Foster What about Wayne's claim it was John Ford that mentored him and put him into the main stream, including the name change?

@Waslamist If that is so, then why is it told that way by so-called documentary narrators, which includes photographs of Wayne and Ford together relaxing on Ford's yacht?

Wayne never met Earp! It's a old Hollywood myth. My family is in the business I know tons of stories. Earp was a habitual lier even his sister in law said this many times. He was also a cold-blooded murder

Definitely fascinating! I have heard this story about Wyatt Earp refereeing the fight and the controversy it caused him but I hadn't heard about the obscured "low blow" that rendered Earp's decision. Thanks for the update and full explanation. Boxing always leaves nearly as many contradictory views and opinions behind as it was meant to settle. It's ashamed our Hero Lawman couldn't clear his name; I have no problem believing Earp's integrity remains intact. Thanks again for your posts.

What has always amazed me about Earp is that for all the gunfights he was in, all the towns he was a sheriff in, all the encounters with real bad people - he ends his life by dying of natural causes! It seems that the only fight he ever lost was one he wasn't even in!

People oftentimes forget about Earp, California. It is about 50 miles north of Blythe, Ca. on the Colorado River across from Parker, AZ. There is (or was) a Post Office in Earp. I would stop by the Earp Post Office and have Postcards hand stamped Earp, California and mail them to people who had no idea the town even existed. You could do this if you were in any Post Office and wanted the name of the town stamped on the letter or Postcard. Otherwise the stamp of another nearby town would be stamped on the letter by a machine. Small place, but according to legend Wyatt Earp lived there long enough to have this very small town named after him.

Wyatt Earp was definitely a bad ass, but my favorites are Doc Holiday, Johnny Ringo, and the feud/rivalry between the two of them. Were they really as deadly and skilled gunfighter as the movies and stories have depicted them? I would love to take a time machine back in time to see some of the crazy shit they did in person.

John Wayne talked to Wyatt and asked him about his way to intimidate people. I don't remember the whole conversation but it was about being mucho ,carefully deliberate with no fear and a swager when you walk to unnerve the victim.

And that's why the law enforcer didn't want to ref the fight, because it's hard, he's a policeman not a boxing referee, but the crowd insisted and he was peered pressure into it and look it tarnished him.

According to local pundits at the fight Fitzximmons hit Sharkey with a legitimate body punch which was his specialty. Sharkey fell to the canvass holding his groin claiming "foul blow" Earp gave the fight to Sharkey and the crowd erupted believing Earp had money on the American. to win.
@afranks8566
@afranks8566 Жыл бұрын
That's the problem... the majority of the spectators that saw it didn't see it land low. They saw a legit body shot, and Earp seemed to be in a hurry to disqualify Fitzsimmons for it. It was very shady!!

@@TheBatugan77 Stuart Lake freely admitted most of Wyatt's alleged autobiography was lakes fiction Earp only met with Lake two or three times and was very tight lipped about his past said Lake. Wyatt then died and Lake admitted he used a phony first person style to finish the book. You can look up Lakes own words in this pinhead. The famous gunfight was not at the ok corral but in a vacant lot owner by CS Fly. Took but 30 seconds abd over the years I've read EVERY single eyewitness account. Earp himself called it a street fight and never mentioned the OK Corral and neither did anyone in Tombstone at that time. Town opinion was sharply divuded over the fight. Tombstone script writer Kevin Jarre admitted the whole red sash thing was his OWN invention not historical fact. Earp never owned a Buntline and such were not in Colt catalog until 1957!!!!!!!!!!!! So do sine homework snowflake.

"I have read much different accounts of Wyatt Earp. "At the end of the OK Corral fight, Earp was a hero?" No, to the citizens of Tombstone he was a crooked gambler and taking cuts from saloons and other gambler's games. A head of the town's gambling vices and held in low esteem. He, et al, endured the coroner's inquest. He failed to keep his hold on the gambling enterprises, and along with his shedding his mistress, wound up having to leave town after his revenge was satisfied. His ego, stoked by a writer's glorification, caused him to spend the rest of his life seeking more PR esteem. I remember a relative describing him in her interview as "just a gambler. I guess consider the sources when reading "hero" of the West.

Tombstone was a boomtown. Gambling was a big part of such towns, at such times. He was not a Christian, so he saw it as an enterprising way to make money. Also, you fail to disclose that you side with only half the people of Tombstone. Wyatt was respected by the other half. Try reading the actual court transcripts of the witnesses. There was a reason he was acquitted of murder in the "OK Corral" gunfight.

Well people loved and despised Wyatt but I’d say most knew deep down he was a tough son of a gun. Just think (I respect the office of a lawman we must have them) if policing was done this day in time the same way they had to do it 120 years ago…..90 percent would not be up for the job. They are “good” at their job now days because of the dog pack mentality. You don’t have one or two guys trying to enforce the law on hundreds at a time you have 15 show up all at once on the same call. Makes it safer for the deputies.
