my dad died a couple years ago. he used to play this song all the time when i was younger, every summer. he was a big b-52’s guy. i got that from him, but everytime i would listen to this song on my own, it always sounded off. i didn’t realise there were two versions! he always played this version and never told me that, the bastard. he does have some pretty good taste, though- this is definitely the superior version. just turned 20 two weeks ago. still sounds just as good as when he used to play it. miss you dad 🤙

What's amazing to me is the polarity of this song against 'Deadbeat Club', it's like one is the first weekend in June, and the other is the last weekend in September. It's like 'Summer of Love' is looking forward to the fun times ahead, and Deadbeat Club is looking back on the memories.

This song is really bittersweet (counting that this one is in their last release as a quintet). It's like a goodbye and an epitaph for Ricky Wilson.

I always thought the same thing too. This version is more upbeat, but there is an underlying somber and sadness because of Ricky’s passing.

It's nice to hear a song with just the women singing, just for some variety. They nailed that "summer" feeling with the 'Orange Popsicles & Lemonade' line.
@Buc_Stops_Here7 жыл бұрын
They do this periodically - lately one song each album has them just singing. "Roam" comes to mind on "Cosmic Thing" as does the new hit on this greatest hits album, "Debbie" which is about Debbie Harry of Blondie. Interestingly enough, Cindy Wilson who rarely sings lead the whole song did it on Debbie - when she came back to the band. It made it to #35 on Billboard so it became a hit in its own right.

This is how they sing it live. The original version is just too cute and silly. This is just right. I saw them live at Radio City in NYC right after they had achieved major commercial success with "Cosmic Thing". They were successful and obviously excited and yet somehow incredibly sad due to the fact that Ricky Wilson wasn't with them. It remains the greatest concert I have ever seen. People were dancing and crying while they played this song. It was extremely wistful and sad. Cindy Wilson was a super nova that night. Every move she made got people cheering. I honestly was stunned at what they had become. I had seen them many times before but nothing prepared me for this concert. This song was one I had only heard maybe once or twice before in the other version. I was crying along with everybody else.

The B-52's helped transition from the 70s to the fun of the 80s. I like almost every song they have made. I still lament Ricky's passing. I love the great happy energy. Ricky's guitar plaing was unique.

I had a Summer of Music once. Found a Seattle bar with an out-of-this-world DJ... I'd go in there and hang for hours. This cut was one of the discoveries - I'd never heard this version. Still as dreamy as the first time. He also turned me on to My Morning Jacket, Polyphonic Spree, Annuals... with blasts of Dusty Springfield and Bow Wow Wow. I learned to visit there with a freakin notepad.

This is an older version of the song. The band used a Fairlight C.M.I. II x extensively on the Bouncing Off The Satellites album. Ricky Wilson the B52's guitarist died of A.I.D.S. from a blood transfusion. The B%2's drummer switched from drums to guitar.

Fred's absence is too much to bear. He doesn't need to be *as* present as he is in the album version, but to not have him at all is just too much of an anomaly, and the music sounds empty and hallow without his booking voice interjecting his spoken-word soliloquies into the harmonizing rhythms of what essentially makes the B-52's sound quintessentially theirs. 👂💔😢. Nah. May the rest of you find Double the same treats in this this world.
