Not protective enough sadly, or rather as far as I know, they've kind of been putting people through hoops by giving them partial licenses, so then the creators of original works tend to deviate more from the source, because they don't have license to use parts of the setting. A bit similar thing that happened to rings of power. So yes, if a show is done directly for WG and they are not selling the license to somebody then cool, but then you also get budget constraints. It's funny how mainstream media adaptions tend to turn everyone into selfish miserable pricks. They want to make everything so "realistic" and "relatable" that the fantasy becomes no longer desirable. The world of the witcher is horrible with monsters, famine, disease and curses. Yet the genuinely good, sympathetic characters with a good heart still made it something to enjoy, a world where hapiness can be found. The conclusion of the actor sumarrises it perfectly. I was introduced to Witcher through Season 1 of the Netflix series and it peaked my interest. Bought Witcher 3 immediately after the last episode and spent the first 3 months of 2020 completely blown away by how great the game is. Then I bought the audio books and listed to them at work for the next few months. I was stoked that Netflix was gonna adapt the books, then Season 2 happened. I hope Henry Cavill finds his dream role and I hope we can have a faithfully adapted Witcher series one day.

I was growing up reading witcher books, so I was really hyped when they decided to make netflix serial for the witcher. There is old Polish one, but they really did it dirty, so I was like "Yeah now is the time!". Well, it wasn't and netflix somehow managed to make it worse than it's predecessor from 2002. First season left me confused and miserable. I watched 2nd with sole purpose poking fun of it. Play the games, read the books. Witcher cinematography is cursed af.
@blackshard641 Жыл бұрын
The sad thing is that the 2002 one was bad because they knew the material, but lacked the budget and expertise to realize their passion. Netflix had the budget and (arguably) somewhat more experience with filmmaking, but completely hamstrung their every advantage due to their lack of passion for the material and understanding of the audience. One need only look to the overwhelming success of the MCU (or TW3!) to see what happens when passion and knowledge of the source material and its audience meets artistic competence and a large budget.

Synopsis: Quarter the century after the Rivian Pogrom (the very last events from the Witcher Saga) Kaer Morhen, an old keep of the witchers from the school of the Wolf, is being attacked. Leader of the assault is a mighty warrior - Agaius. A few years later from Aretuza, newly rebuilt school of the sorceress, runs Ornella, who has been suspected of finding the legendary Alzur’s Almanac. I have a soft spot for the old Wiedźmin show. Maybe it is nostalgia, maybe it is Netflix making me like the old show more than I should, but disregarding a few episodes that were completely unrelated to the books, I thought they did stories like the golden dragon, the story of Renfri, and Geralt and Ciri reuniting much much better than Netflix. It isn’t perfect but there was still a heart and care in that old show. The TV show version at least, the movie was a mess. Not perfect but I enjoy it far more than Netflix. Also yes “Alzur’s Legacy” is very good. Pół Wieku Poezji Później in Polish. It even brings back Zbigniew Zamachowski from the old Wiedźmin series as Dandelion/Jaskier.

As someone who just started reading the books (halfway through a time of contempt right now), something I feel the Netflix series has royally screwed up is the relationship between Geralt and Dandelion. They are best friends, two rapscallions getting into all sorts of trouble together. Sure Geralt gets annoyed with Dandelion at times but it is still very endearing. In the show they play on the troupe of the annoying scoundrel who constantly annoys the hero of the story, they make it seem like Geralt hates Dandelion and just wants him to leave him alone. Small detail but completely changes the way you view Geralt in the way he treats/speaks to Dandelion and the friendship the two of them share
@music-is-my-world-834 ай бұрын
I don't think it's a small detail at all. One of my favorite relationships from the series is their enduring friendship and loyalty. They are ride or die throughout. I abandoned the series on Netflix when Geralt left Jaskier on the mountain after telling him he ruined his life. Book Geralt would never! They made Geralt's character so emotionally constipated, it was insufferable and hard to watch.

The big things I caught: Geralt and Yennefer think of Ciri as their daughter in the source material/games, like a found family unit, so those scenarios where they put her in danger or sacrifice her are unthinkable. The wolf school of witchers isn't making any more witchers, so Vessemir wanting to put Ciri through the mutations makes no sense. Basically, the mutations have a 90% mortality rate, which means a lot of kids die just for the chance of making one witcher. The world doesn't really need witchers anymore, so the wolf school stopped making more. It's actually what puts the cat school in a bad light, they're still making more witchers, killing more kids, and they're working as hired assassins rather than monster hunters. Their whole morality system is questionable at best, giving them a bad reputation. Hope this gives some context to some of that! :D I'm not finished with the game yet so far, but I'm enjoying it a lot.

Eh scenes from first book was not all that much changed in first season of the show though.
@tymondabrowski12 Жыл бұрын
@@Botar48 Not really, imho the whole destiny thing was very different. For example, in the show Geralt and Ciri only meet once, after they both look for each other - not really much of a destiny there. In the books, they meet each other by chance several times (first he just saw her, not knowing which one of the kids is her, or even if any of them is; it was an audience with the queen, who understandably denied any contact, let alone taking her, and Geralt was kinda relieved by that too; next time he brought her to Mousesack himself after randomly finding her in a druid forest), and the last time is literally another Child of Surprise thing (it's a pretty funny scene, because the guy who Geralt saved said that his wife is actually barren and can't have more children (which is why he agreed to the Law of Surprise), and then they arrive to the hut and his wife comes out and says "our three children will come home soon" and he's like "what three children? We had two?" and she says "I hope you won't be angry, I took in this little orphan from the druids..." and yes, that was Ciri), and that was after he decided to stop looking for her around Cintra. Their hug made more sense there, too, because they knew and talked to each other earlier. You can see how Geralt wasn't really aiming to get her, and their encounters were clearly all by destiny. Also the Jaskier & Geralt relationship is very skewed, Jaskier is treated very badly by Geralt for no reason. In the books it's very clear they're friends, even if they're kind of an "odd couple". It gets better in later seasons though.
