So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.» (Gospel - Matthew - Chapter: 1...)

This irritates Yen and, being the petty, sassy ass she is, she sends him a letter and emphasizes the use of the word friend to make a point which is also kinda cute. In the book it actually makes more sense, because first Geralt was close to the city where Yennefer and Ciri were Gors Velen, nearby isle of Thanedd, as Geralt was actually shadowing them (first taking out the assassins trailing them) and then wandered around in the area. "Molnar,' she said coldly. 'Let sleeping dogs lie. I doubt that he still considers me dear to him, and if he finds out about the erased debt, he will hate me even more. You know him, how obsessed with honour he is. How long ago was he in Dorian?' 'About ten days ago. He has been spotted later in Little Meadow. From there, as I was informed, he rode to Hirundum, answering the notice of local peasants. A monster, as usual.'" ... "'These poor souls,' she interrupted, 'probably had nowhere to run. Fabio? Where's the town... Hirundum?' The boy gave her a confused look. 'Hirundum's not a town,' he corrected. 'It's a huge farm. There are orchards and gardens providing vegetables and fruit to all towns in the region. There are also many ponds with carps and other fish...' 'How far is Hirundum? Which way is it? Show me.' 'Why would you need to know that?' 'I asked you to show me.' 'See that road, leading west? The one the wagons are at? That's the road to Hirundum. About fifteen miles, through the woods.' 'Fifteen miles', Ciri repeated after him. 'Not far for a good horse... Thank you, Fabio.' " So in the books Ciri was missing Geralt and upon hearing he is nearby he wanted to ride to him and he was indeed some 15 miles away, in the book though Yennefer cast a spell which drove off the phantoms of Wild Hunt. The netflix show doesn't do worldbuilding of the witcher world, and any sort of geography any proper way :).

The Witcher netflix series plays as a teenage fanfiction of the book and video games that happens to cast legitimately good actors. The show will never be able to undo Yenn's attempted sacrifice of Ciri, something that completely goes against everything she stands for in both the books and the games. The writers wanted to Game of Thrones the Witcher and must have taken inspiration from only season 8.

Yen would have sacrificed an entire town of people for a bit of power in a heartbeat. She would have taken most deals to get herself an advantage. The only person she wouldn't sell out is Ciri - and what do the showrunners decide on? At this point it has to qualify as weaponized incompetence.

So I'm very involved in fantasy and medieval inspired fashion and a few people who supposedly worked on S3 appeared in my favourite designer's Instagram stories. According to some extras and some people involved in production, the costume budget in particular is absolute ass this season. Background characters are in rented costumes from other productions or wearing whatever could be thrown together. And somebody traced Yennefer's awful purple blouse back to 2013 H&M, apparently. While I can frequently see the ghost of good choices (giving Yennefer puff sleeves is always a win, but the style of garment they're attached to? Not so much. Or playing with interesting hairstyles for Fringilla's coily texture) the execution is almost always lacking. This season we also got very visible fake nails, dubious wigs and orange foundation - particularly on Ciri. It shouldn't get to the point when I, a goth fan who likes clothes, suspect that I could have done better.

Just for a little context in the time of William Shakespeare (1564-1616 AD) it took 3 days to travel from, London to Stratford Upon Avon, which is only a distance of 103 miles. In the show Geralt is seen traveling several hundred miles to save Ciri in what appears to be less than an afternoon. I equate the two because they both seem to be in or around the middle ages time period. Perhaps as someone has commented they have fast travel in this show, I would like to add to that and suggest that the writers are using save points and making different dialogue options which is why the shows narrative from season 2 to 3 is disjointed.

@@535phobos yeah...Tolkien was meticulous worldbuilder and was seriously working out on geography and time of travel, hell he made sure that Frodo journey time was reflecting the actual moon phases...now tha's dedication...while Sapkowski is not nearl as meticulous worldbuilder as Tolkien, and he never even made an actual official map he still worked through writing to give some sense of geography...and the next witcher book which netflix show will start butchering in season 4 deals heavily with difficulties of travel there is one scene in that book where Geralt calculates the distance to cover: "'So why do you stand here alone in the moonlight?' 'I'm counting.' 'Huh?' 'Since we left Brokilon, twelve days have passed, during which we have travelled about sixty miles. Ciri, so the rumors say, is in Nilfgaard, the capital of the empire, a place that separates me by two thousand five hundred miles. A simple calculation shows that at this rate I'll get there in a year and four months. What do you say to that?' 'Nothing.' Milva shrugged her shoulders and cleared her throat again." Witcher, Baptism of Fire And when it comes to Geralt saving Ciri from Wild Hunt, in the book Time of Contempt Geralt is actually following the Yennefer and Ciri, or rather shadowing their movements to some degree keeping thungs off their back like the Professor the famous assassin he kills, in book they were follwoing Yennefer and Ciri as they travelled to Gors Velen port city, close by to the isle of Thanedd and Geralt after dispatching those was nearby....several miles away from the city in the farming land of Hirundum and Ciri learned he is close and escaped Yennefer to meet with him (for at this point in books Geralt and Yennefer have not seen each other, they only contacted through letters on actual distance for it's been years since they last saw each other and Ciri was first with Geralt until he travelled with her to temple of Melitele and went hunting for Rience and answers to the questions and helping secure her safety while Yennefer was given message in the letter to travel to the temple of Melitele in Ellander to train Ciri in magic....Time of Contempt book and the events of Ciri's escape lead to Geralt and Yennefer first reunion. Witcher books also work out particular geography of this world: "Aplegatt rose and looked around. Downhill was a river and behind it were forests. The courier rushed his horse. Time was pressing on. He was on his way for the past two days. King's orders and letters found him in Hagge, where he was resting after his return from Tretogor. He left the castle at night, galloping along the left bank of Pontar, he crossed the border of Temeria before dawn and now, at noon of the following day, he was already near the bank of Ismena. Had king Foltest stayed at Vizima, Aplegatt would have handed him the message just this night. Unfortunately, the king was not in the capital - he stayed in the southern part of his country, in Maribor, two hundred miles away from Vizima. Aplegatt knew this, which is why in the vicinity of the White Bridge he left the main, west-leading road in favour of forest paths in the direction of Ellander. It was a bit risky. The Squirrels still prowled the forests and pitiful was the lot of one who got in their arms or found himself in the range of their bows. But the royal messenger must take risks. Such is his work." Basic worldbuilding! "'As you wish. It's not hard to figure that Yennefer is going on the convent of Wizards, which will take place on the Thanedd Island in Garstang at the beginning of July. She's moving slyly, doesn't use magic, so it's hard to trace her. She was still in Ellander a week ago, so I presume that it will take her three, four more days to reach the city Gors Velen, just a stone throw away from Thanedd. On the way of Gors Velen she will have to go through Anchor village. If you set out now you will be able to take out those who are following her. Because, indeed, she is being followed.'" ... "'Leave it, Heim.' The man with the glasses gestured. 'He's a royal messenger. Not a troublemaker. What is the name of this establishment, innkeeper?' 'Anchor.' 'And how far to Gors Velen?' 'What?' 'How many miles?' 'Me, I never measured it in miles. But it must be three days travel...' 'By horse?' 'By cart.' " ... Thank you, Fabio.' "

Something that has really thrown me off this season is the set/costume design. There are obvious design inspirations from different parts of our non-fictional world, e.g. medieval Eastern Europe, India, Arabia, Africa; however, there is no grounding of why these cultures would appear in the Continent. Usually, a fictional world will have geographical distinctions that explain different cultures, but The Witcher doesn't explain these differences and instead jumbles them all together. It makes the world seem really unbelievable

I feel like that's because cavill is off for geralt and anya is off for yen. don't get me wrong, both of them are amazing actors and deserves all praise, but I never felt like cavill represented geralt very well. he's too expressive. it's usually what you go for a protagonist in a show revolving around a main character, but geralt is a weird character in the books. for me, what sells their chemistry in the books is that both geralt and yen act as emotionally detached and excessively pragmatist, in opposite ways of manifesting coldness. however, this hides a vulnerable and passionate personality. that's why they are so violently attracted: they act kinda opposite, but at the same feels the same way inside. most relationships that they form revolve around people that understands how they truly feel inside, that's where their chemistry lie for me. as crazy as this sounds, I think cavill would actually be way more suited to protray cahir. cahir is the naive, idealist knight that defies his duty to do what he believes is right. he feels like he must protect ciri and even defies geralt himself, eventually. actually, thinking about this just makes me sad remembering what netflix did to cahir on the series...

We now have season three and I still don't understand why they made Vilgefortz losing so easily to Cahir in swordfight during season one. In the books, Vilgefortz was arguably the most dangerous human being when it comes to combat and Cahir would not be a match to him. I initially thought that they are gonna make Cahir the ultimate villain instead, but then, during season 2 and season 3, Cahir got beaten by various unimportant guards or soldiers a couple of times. So I really don't know what was the point of that swordfight in season one, none gained anything from it.

I’m doing a rewatch to see if they laid a foundation for the Vilguefortz plot twist, and I noticed this as well. I think the main problem lies in a complete misunderstanding of the original. And while this season was a step in the right direction, that main problem hasn't changed. The main strength of the books has always been the characters, their relationships, and how they are affected by the world they have to adapt to and grapple with. The show, on the other hand, focuses on the plot and how the characters affect the world. Sapkowski always used the world of The Witcher as a way to talk about social problems and moral issues - very relevant today and very progressive for Poland at the end of the communist era. (While of course also playing with Central and Eastern European history or European legends). But he never did it in a blunt and violent way of virute signaling: he always examined the issue with extreme care from many angles, until there was no good and evil, but only points of view, where one might take a position but actually understand the other side and sympathize with it. Further, one of his favorite things was deconstructing classic fantasy stereotypes - especially those about fate, prophecy, and predestination. Lauren correctly observed that all of these were talked about a lot, and again - made it a traditional fantasy about the fate of the world. Only, that's exactly what Sapkowski didn't want. He wanted to subvert the reader's expectations and show them something they've seen a hundred times before in 80s and 90s fantasy and take it in a whole new direction, and he did it with absolute precision, in my opinion.

Even watching the recap before going into S3 part 1, we were like "okay well we still don't understand what most of the characters motivations are, maybe season 3 will fix that"... aaaand now it's worse because all of their motivations seem to have done a complete 180, the dozen or so storylines are interwoven by weirdly arbitrary dialog, and yeah why is Batman Elf even here oh he's dead now okay fine. BUT it's not a complete disaster yet. I understand now thanks to this vid why it feels like season 3 is doing an about-face with every character.
