Last year I saw James McBride at my Indie Bookstore for the launch of H&EGS. This year he returned for their literary festival and performed on Saturday night with The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store Gospel Band, where he played his sax as a band member and read about five passages from the book interspersed between songs. I highly recommend seeing them if they come to your neck of the woods.
@SupposedlyFunАй бұрын
That's so cool! Unfortunately, not many authors work there way here, and bands only come through if their tour needs a place to pass through.

@@SupposedlyFun Trust me, Harrisburg, PA is not a usual destination for anything beyond state politics. So, like your Montana Book Store, our Indie store is a lovely little oasis in the middle of nowhere that people pass through on the way to Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. I’m almost done with their reading challenge, I’m dragging my feet on that Jeff Vandermeer book!

Thanks for reminding me to read “Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.” “Of Time and Turtles” is on my to read list. I appreciate your intelligence in commenting on books worth reading. Books are pricy and you just want to get something wonderful to read. I have a pile of them to finish! All have been talked about by you! Thank you.

I really enjoyed Lincoln Highway ( I haven’t read of any of his others). I found it a real page turner almost like an adventure story. My advice give it to Joel, I bet he likes it and gets you to read it.

Monster in the Middle was a two star read for me. I did finish it but I actually had to go back to my Goodreads just to remember what it was and my rating. Find Me was horrible! I ended up hate reading it and then threw it across the room
@SupposedlyFunАй бұрын
I should count myself lucky I didn't get far enough in to feel invested enough to throw Find Me across the room. 😂 Good to know re: Monster in the Middle. Maybe I should just let it go. 🤔

I think you should read The Lincoln Highway. Though it wasn’t my favorite Towles book, I really enjoyed it.

I read monster in the middle a few years ago. I don’t remember exactly what the scene was but had it not been a library book I remember wanting to throw the book. There are a few lasting things that I thought were creepy, I would recommend unhaul if it were me lol

You have to treat yourself to watching the trilogy of films linked to the Barrytown books. William Trevor is a writer I love. My favourite is The Ballad of Lucy Gault 💕☘️

Ah a favorite video today! Love these revisits! I will have to see if my library has Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World, Benjamin Alire Sáenz as I am looking for a good audio book. I have been going hard on the intense non fiction lately so I may try this one.

I have both Good Lord Bird and Grocery Store.Which would you recommend starting with?
@SupposedlyFunАй бұрын
I started with The Good Lord Bird, so I feel like that way makes the most sense. Heaven and Earth Grocery Store is a more sprawling narrative, so Good Lord Bird is maybe a good introduction to McBride.

I ended up skipping a whole chapter of Phoebe's book. Why do comedians always have a bathroom chapter? You've been warned.

There was a fair amount of bathroom stuff on her old podcast, 2 Dope Queens, to be fair.
