Snow Child is awesome especially because the author lives in Alaska and authentically described AK homesteading. I did not find it "fairy tailish" at all. I also think Joel would enjoy the novel.
@SupposedlyFun28 күн бұрын
I love the idea of using a fairy tale or myth as inspiration but grounding the story in a realistic world--so much so that it doesn't feel fairy tale-ish at all. Her upcoming book promises to do the same (and it's also set in Alaska!).

With the election and a kiddo struggling with her mental health, I need all the cinnamon bun books I can get. Reading has been my escape. I will add all the others who piqued my interest to a future TBR when my own brain can handle more serious topics

Wow! I would love to go to one of these trade shows! How many other books were there or did you get most of them? 😉 I think I probably would have come away with a different selection than you did, but that’s just because I enjoy thrillers/crime. Along those lines, Fireweed sounds great and I’m definitely interested. Brightly Shining has now been added to my list to pick up in London. Sounds great. I’ve heard great things about Eowyn Ivey, but after hearing the synopsis of the new one, I’m wondering if she will be too magical for me. I’ve added the new Karen Thompson Walker to my list for next year. I haven’t read The Age of Miracles, but I absolutely loved her second book, The Dreamers. Isola and Tartufo also sound really interesting and are now on my list! You’ve definitely encouraged me to read Selamnik next. I’ve had it for a couple of months but needed a push to pick it up. I have also had Private Rites for a while now and it’s one I would definitely like to get to before the end of the year. I absolutely loved Our Wives Under The Sea and would highly recommend it! What a great haul! I take it you took an extra bag with on the plane for all the books you and Joel brought back? 😂
@SupposedlyFun28 күн бұрын
Believe it or not, there were A LOT of books we didn't take! I've gotten a lot of comments about Eowyn Ivey that even though she takes inspiration from fairy tales and myth, you wouldn't know it by reading her books. I almost bought a copy of Our Wives Under the Sea at Powell's but I removed it from my stack when I found the autographed Josephine Johnson. Oh well! And we definitely brought an extra bag just for the books we knew we would come home with--and it was still a struggle getting it all to fit! We had to leave some books behind on the hotel's give-and-take bookshelves.
@mradcaqbdb28 күн бұрын
@ Can’t argue with the choice to take the autographed Josephine Johnson. That’s a find! Such a bummer having to leave a few books behind, but someone will enjoy them. I’ve had arguments with the suitcase/bags a lot trying to fit all my souvenirs in. Last year, I came back with a couple of slightly bashed books because of storing them in outside pockets of my bag. You gotta do what you gotta do!

You haven't yet read Colm Toibin! I feel that both Brooklyn and Long Island are his more 'commercial' books and would therefore rather recommend The Master or The Magician. I have had enjoyment from his earlier novels - The Heather Blazing and The Blackwater Lightship. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts once you embark on this wonderful author.

I have several books mentioned in the video in my collection and have also had a huge accumulation of books in the past few months. My most anticipated books to get to are Framed by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey and Patriot: A memoir by Alexei Navalny (both nonfiction) and Entitlement by Rumaan Alam. I look forward to your thoughts on Brooklyn. I enjoyed it and preordered the paperback to match my copy of Brooklyn so I continue to wait. I also picked up two of Colm Tóibín's other novels The Empty Family and The Master which I look forward to reading. Be well.

@@marciajohansson769 Marcia, I have many cinnamon bun suggestions but the list would be insanely long so off the top of my head I suggest: “The Maid” by Nita Prose (2022). Molly the Maid discovers a dead body in the hotel in which she works. If you like this book, there are more in the series. “Sipsworth” by Simon Van Booy (2024). A heartwarming story about an 80-year-old widow in England who befriends a mouse.
