Book Launch: ‘Head Over Heels: Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman, A Love Affair in Words and Pictures’

Westport's own Melissa Newman was at The Westport Library to celebrate launch of her extraordinary new book, "Head Over Heels: Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman, A Love Affair in Words and Pictures," in conversation with longtime friend and filmmaker Doug Tirola.
Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, longtime Westport residents, became not only movie stars and stage actors, but also artistic collaborators, political activists, and philanthropists whose legacies are expansive and enduringly modern. They are one of America's most indelibly iconic couples.
With 120+ photos of Paul and Joanne together, including many that have never been published, the book celebrates the enduring power of love. It is chock full of handwritten love notes, snapshots, letters, and family treasures that have never been released - and offer revelatory and intimate insights into the private lives of these towering figures in American public life.
The images are taken by some of the most celebrated photographers of our time: Richard Avedon, Sid Avery, Ralph Crane, Bruce Davidson, John Engstead, Leo Fuchs, Milton H. Greene, Philippe Halsman, John R. Hamilton, Leonard McCombe, Gordon Parks, Sanford Roth, Roy Schatt, Lawrence Schiller, Sam Shaw, Bradley Smith, and David Sutton - plus family snapshots capturing candid and telling moments.
Melissa Newman is an artist, teacher, singer, and writer based in Westport.
Doug Tirola, also a Westport resident, is an American filmmaker and writer who has worked as a director and executive producer. He is the owner and president of 4th Row Films, a movie and television production company.

Great, I’m buying the book! I ❤ them and look forward to all of the stories, pictures, quotes, and love letters! I can see both Mom and Dad in Melissa. I’m editing this because I posted it before I heard about Joanne’s dementia. I wanted to share a story… The first moment I laid my eyes on Paul in the movies, I developed an endless crush on him. As I got older, I realized it was time to know more about Joanne, so I did find out more about Joanne via the media. What I discovered was that not only is she amazingly beautiful, but was/is a perfect match made in heaven for Paul. I love them both, for all their contributions to my (our) daily lives. And Melissa, thank you for sharing them and you with us.

Absolutely loved this! She looks so much like her dad. I became a Paul Newman fan when I first saw him in the Sting when I was about 10 years old. I've seen probably 99% of his movies. Not just the famous ones. It was such a big deal for me when he had a new movie out (which I would go see in the theatre if I could) or was going to be on Larry King or Letterman or Leno. I miss him.

So you turned off commenting on Gender story reading? wonder why. By turning off commenting, you are showing how fragile your propaganda is and showing your totalitarizam. Parents wanted the book out, who are you to decide beyond parents on wellbeing of their kids, and continue to propagate this book, but without commenting, haha... Good Gender story got banned. Hope such ridicule never comes to my country.
