"The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen and "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry always remind me of Christmas and the feelings of winter. My parents bought me a copy of "The Holly and the Ivy" when I was little which was a children's story. I do not know the history of it or whether or not it is a story that someone made up to go with the Christmas carol rather than something that has been around for decades. Thank you for sharing your suggestions.

I think that the Holly and the Ivy were ancient symbols of male and female, and both plants were used to decorate the home in winter.

Lucky you! I live in a Christian community and they aggressively try to save "the lost" by pressuring people to get "saved" all the time and in every way possible---it's in sports, community events, sometimes they even knock on my door with Bible tracts warning people of going to hell!! It's everywhere. I get so sick of it.

You named several of my own Christmas stories I pull out each year. Tolkien’s Father Christmas Letters, Nutcracker, and Frances Hodgson Burnett are all in my stack (the Little Princess just strikes me as such a Christmas story too - where Sarah wakes up and “the magic” has made a cheerful little fire and hot tea). While I’ve read a number of the Burnett’s major and lesser known works, I hadn’t read the Christmas short story you mentioned. Thank you for reviewing it. I’m now in hot pursuit of to find it and read it.

The Flying classroom by Erich Kästner is one of my favourite Christmas books. It takes place during December in a boarding school in Germany and goes all the way up to Christmas. I read it many times as a child, and I still have the book and re-read it every few years. It's funny but also emotional in places and it will bring tears to your eyes. Also a nice fantasy winter read, not Christmasy though, is the "Spinning Silver" by Naomi Novik.

Ruby, as you asked… a couple of festive books for consideration. ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ by Dylan Thomas. A very short book illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. It’s whimsical and the prose is wonderfully lilting. ‘The Wise Robin’ by Noel Barr. A Ladybird book, illustrated by P.B. Hickling. Long out of print but widely available online at modest cost. A short, charming Christmas book for anyone aged between four years and 94 years.

Christmas book recommendation: Christmas at Fairacre by Miss Read - a collection of short stories about various people in the fictional English village of Fairacre and the surrounding area, with stories set between the early to mid-20th Century. Very warm and wholesome with nostalgia of old-fashioned Christmases. My mum and I read it every year to get us into the spirit!

My recommendation is the second book in the Dark is Rising Sequence, by Susan Cooper, which is also called Dark is Rising. It was made into a not faithful film which entirely missed the point and I recommend you avoid. But the book is excellent for being incredibly atmospheric to the point of feeling like you have time travelled. I like all five books, but this one is absolutely stand out and can be read alone. It makes my hair stand up on end, and good luck to everyone who has a skylight in their room getting through the night without leaving a lamp on. It’s Christmas happening while the main character is trying to figure out what is going on, and it’s very magical and powerful and old. Susan Cooper did a brilliant job of tying it to things you think you half remember so you feel like you already know the answer. It’s very well done, and a very easy read as it’s technically a children’s book. Lucky children is all I can say.

Kate Chopin was actually from where I went to Uni. There are two more stories by Yanks I would like to recommend. The first is "The Gift of the Magi" by O Henry. O Henry was a 19th Century Short Story writer who usually wrote stories that were very tongue in cheek. "The Gift of the Magi" is not one of those. This short story has more heart than most novels. If you don't know it's about a Poor Young Couple in the late 19th Century who are trying to figure out what to buy one another for Christmas. The story is about true love, sacrifice and devotion. The second is a series of stories set around Christmas in early 19th Century England by Washington Irving. Irving who is most associated with Halloween has a variety of stories and his Christmas stories are warm and cozy and everything nice about Christmas.

Thank you for your lovely podcast. There is a lovely book in Irish but I don't know if it is translated. "An Nollaig thiar" by Breandán Ó'hEithir, an account of his growing up on Inis Mór and Christmas on the island.
