This summer I got my first e-reader: I found a Kindle from 2012 in a free pile on the curb and was instantly in love. The battery still has tons of life, so I did a factory reset, put it in airplane mode, and back loaded it with Calibre. It can't update anymore so I'll never see a single ad - it's as close to a dumb phone ereader as you could get and has zero functionality outside of reading books. I put a compostable phone grip from Pela on the back, and it's the last gen to have physical buttons on both sides, so I literally can walk and read at the same time, read while lying in bed, while cooking, etc. It's not back or side lit but I just use the book light I already had when I need it. I have ADHD and hate small font so now I can read way faster with big type. For anyone in the fence about e-readers, I highly recommend getting a Gen 4 Kindle off eBay for $15 as they've only gotten worse since then imo.

I am an indie author and THANK YOU for being a certified Amazon Hater. They have been keeping book prices so artificially low and it's TERRIBLE for authors, it's terrible for bookstores, and it's terrible for readers. Also, thank you for the Audible hate. Authors get MAYBE 20% in royalties, literally the lowest of all audiobook platforms. I hate Amazon and how it's got authors between a rock and a hard place and it's got readers in the frying pan. It's bad for everyone who loves books. But it's also gaslit so many indie authors into thinking they won't make ANY money unless they are exclusive to KU. They've convinced too many indie authors that being exclusive to Amazon is the only way to reach readers. But guess what? When you're exclusive to Amazon, they don't let you put your book in libraries! Libraries; the literal easiest way to reach readers. "oh but if my books aren't in KU, low income readers won't be able to read it for free!" ah yes because a low income reader can afford $11.99 for KU but can't afford the $0.00 for a library card and the $0 Libby app????? Sorry for popping off in your comments but oh my gosh de-influence Amazon HARDER PLEASE.

Amazon is evil, so I won't defend it, but I do want to point out that governments should be taking measures to stop these things from happening. In Spain, Amazon (or any business) can't make books dirt cheap. It's not legal. So you'll also never see sales on books, even for Black Friday. This was implemented to protect smaller book sellers and to stop unfair competition. It's part of a whole law that regulates the price of books.

I definitely think over-consumption is a HUGE problem in the book world and I too hate Amazon, haha, but I *really* disagree with two items on this list 🙈A Kindle and a page turner and arm! Haha. Just some reasons I stand by them 100% -> - the page turner and arm -- I looooove using it with my walking pad or in bed or bundled under blankets on the couch during winter or on my lounge chair outside in the sun, etc. I have friends who use it while breastfeeding and one who uses it while cooking (she has cookbooks on her Kindle). Many fold up and store away nicely so it doesn't need to be an eyesore in your living room! - my Kindle -- I know, Amazon, ugh. BUT a Kobo or any other e-reader does not have all the same features yet. I have hope that Kobo will eventually, as they are quick to improve and have some great features overall, but right now I will stick to my Kindle. Especially if you learn languages, a Kindle really is better. Kindles have mono- and bilingual dictionaries, Wikipedia, Google translate, automatically created flashcards and word lists, and more. oh, theres this book that you might love, Against amazon and other essays by Jorge Carrión, (its been a few years since ive read it so my memory is a bit fuzzy but) its about, amongst other things, the harm of amazon in the book industry, but it also talks about libraries and bookstores around the world and how they are able stay open. really, really interesting read

for people living in countries that dont have libby, although paid (10.99€ in Spain), its a lot better than audible, i use everand!! its a paid subscription but you get up to i think 7 audiobooks a month, and therers also ebooks and magazines, podcasts etc. its pretty nice! also girl, this is so weird but I feel like I'm watching myself in a different font lol

I don’t have access to Libby because I’m French so I use Everand and it’s not perfect but it’s a lot cheaper than Audible and I can listen to a lot more books each month

My husband HATED the ereader arm I attached to my bed 😂😂 I also felt buyers remorse 😅
@bizarrepanic2701Ай бұрын
Jumped the Amazon ship around 22 and other people are coming around. The only reason it took so long was because all the other ereader options came from China at that time and I'm not down with being monitored. I got a kobo two years ago and have been enjoying 0 ads full of shirtless smutty books I never wanted and will never read. Needless to say, I've been able to actually finish a book since then.

I love ereaders for books I want to try through libby and then I buy the ones I truly love as physical copies so I save space and cut down on impulse book buys that I don’t know I will actually like.

Hello. Fellow Canadian here and this is the first video of yours I have watched and I instantly subscribed. I understand that people have issues with Amazon and was disheartened to learn that Abebooks is owned by Amazon. This sucks because I do get a lot of my books through Abe. What is an alternative used books site for Canadians? In the UK they have Oxfam stores that sell books online and I would love something like that here.
@CreativityDiaries2 ай бұрын
@@hellopaulie I appreciate you and I’m so happy you’re here!! I honestly thrift most my books - I don’t have an answer for online used bookstores in Canada atm unfortunately but hopefully will soon!

Idk about Canadian availability but Better World Books is great! Plus if you bank with Atmos (an amazing sustainability focused bank) then you get cash back from buying through them.

I'd love to switch to Kobo, but the catalogue for English books in my country is so limited, basically non-existent. I can only read books in English on my kindle.

I will say that Libby is amazing in some places but pretty unusable in others. I live in Norway and my local libraries have a pretty limited online selection so Libby kinda sucks…

Honestly I wish I got a used e-reader for waaaay cheaper instead of following advice to get a new one 😭 Literally can get one so, so cheap and affordably that does the same thing as the new one! Mine isn't a color screen nor does it have audio. Nevertheless I don't think I'll have to worry about buying another one ever again because of the battery life. Genuinely a lot of reading you can do on your phone for free with Libby and not even need to spend money on an e-reader! And just in general the local library is a fantastic and amazing place to read... again for free. Thank you for being honest about your opinions!

A few years ago, when I discovered the book community, specifically booktok, and started heavily reading i went to look for a Kindle bc of course i did 🤪 everyone else had one 😅 but lucky for me at the time the Basic kindle was literally $50 (it was close to the holidays) anyway it was such a good deal and considering i was pretty new to reading consistently and knew i probably would read consistently that was an awesome deal. Its no paperwhite or whatever but it gets the job done.

I’ve had one of them $60 rca tablets from Walmart(got it in 2016) and literally stopped working like maybe 2 years ago. After it stopped updating, it took forever to load anything and it had to stay on charge all the time. Kind of glad it stopped working cause it stressed me out but I wasn’t buying a new one considering I have a phone now lol

I won an ereader 2 years ago and I love it!! I don’t know if I would have bought it myself lol. And it’s not a kindle, I don’t wanna support Amazon. It’s a tolino, an ereader from Thalia (the German Barns and Nobel). The only sad thing is that I can’t find cool cases, but I just crochet them myself 🤭 Oh and I use BookBeat instead of Audible. I read a lot of English books that my library don’t have 😞 maybe I can get an online subscription in an English speaking library. Is it for free? 🤔

You can try getting a library card at a US library! Some of them have offers for international people, but it does always cost. It's usually not too expensive, though. Usually less than 100 for the entire year! 💜

I got a kindle paperwhite after literally a half decade of using a giant, heavy kindle fire for ereading. I pretty much instantly regretted it because I miss using libby and I can't read graphic novels on it because it is not in color. I was doing research recently and discovered the Kobo and put it on my christmas list. I hadn't even heard of the kobo until last month. I canceled my prime membership years ago cause i hate supporting them. I have felt weird supporting them with kindle and I am looking forward to not doing it anymore. Also I feel the same about Botm I just canceled my membership after years. I have read maybe 10 of them? Yeah. It's bad!
