I loved this book and the authors note at the end broke me to pieces even more knowing this story was somewhat based on her mom. I can’t wait for the movie and the sequel in October because wow this book was beautiful and showed how it actually can be in an abusive relationship and why it’s not so easy to leave sometimes. Literally there haven’t been one Colleen book I didn’t like idk how she does it.

I really do enjoy her writing style & how she is able to grab the readers attention so quickly & hold it! The end note broke my heart too 💔 Stories like this are difficult because they are very realistic 💔 I’m excited to read the sequel & fingers crossed for happy endings & beginnings 🤞🏻

I really enjoy the way you fall in love with Ryle as Lily does and then feel just as betrayed as Lily when he hurts her, annoying as it is i also found myself forgiving Ryle as Lily does which makes all the feelings about how the story progresses so much more raw. such a beautiful story though 😋

Yes!!! I know exactly what you mean, & I thought that is what makes Colleen Hoover such an amazing writer. You feel exactly how the characters feel & it was just such a roller coaster of emotions!! I was head over heels in love with Ryle & then he shattered my heart yet I found myself forgiving him the same way Lily did. I did really love Atlas too though - Atlas is perfect 🥺🥰

Hey, I really appreciated your perspective and can't wait to see more of your reviews. When I started to read the book I did not think that it will have such an impact on me. I believed that it will be a silly romance book that I will enjoy at the moment of reading but forget later. However, it was really memorable and had a lot of depth. Especially, I live in Asia, and it is really common to normalize abusive relationships and toxic masculinity. So, when I was reading I was thinking what most of the girls feel and remain silent in such cultures like mine. It was inspiring that Lily put an end to abuse!

This book really got to me. I felt everything Lily did literally. However I personally found part one incredibly slow and basic and I left the book alone for months. I finally came back and part two GRIPPED me. I finally understand, it starts off as a basic romance, which I personally don’t enjoy reading that much, and it’s slow as you go along with Lily’s love evolving. I wish I read it all together at once now. Nonetheless it was a great book and so heartbreaking reading the author’s notes.

The most valuable part of this book is how it describes power, control, and manipulation within an abusive intimate relationship. The physical abuse adds an element of urgency, however, it is the lead up and how a narcissistic psychopath is able to worm into a person’s life and take over. As a reader and someone who was a narcissist’s plaything for far too long - look beyond the physical abuse. Yes it’s horrific, but the most insightful parts of this book start immediately when Lily meets the abusive narcissist: the sexual urgency, the love bombing, the over-the-top Hollywood-style way the narcissist draws her in and makes her need his affection like an addict needs heroine. That is the warning this book conveys. The physical abuse is a byproduct created at the ass-end of a narc.

I love this book but at the end I did kinda hate lily for wanting a divorce cause it was Ryle's and hers most special day and all but after I had finished it and had time to think about it I realized that she made the right choice. like I guess you can say she is the cycle braker? Overall great book but I never grew attached with atlas like I did with Ryle so that's my problem. But i would recommend it to anyone who likes romance novels
@martythezebra

When I read that part I was like "She couldn't have waited a few days to tell him she wanted a divorce? She had to do it on the same day she gave BIRTH?" I thought it was kind of messed up. Although, Ryle was not a very good person in the book, either. I just felt like that part could have been built up a little more.

This book touched me in a very personal way. Since I was bron into an abusive household, I could relate to so many quotes and lines. I tried my best to not cry but the conversation between lily and her mother felt so personal, that I couldn't hold my tears. The mother answered the question I wanted to ask my mom but never did, because I didn't wanted to bringe those memories upon her. And this book made finally talk openly with my mom and helped us so much.

Good review. Colleen Hoover has the best character development in her books. You feel like you know the characters intimately & they’re real people. I cried buckets over It Ends With Us. I actually liked It Starts With Us even better. Atlas is dreamy & everything Ryle isn’t. And it has a perfect ending. But I used at least a Kleenex box on that book too. Colleen Hoover really knows how to write tearjerkers, like no other author I know. She’s an expert at writing emotional stories.

Finally someone I agree with! I hated Ryle. The fact that he literally just randomly touched a woman’s genitals against her own wishes in the first chapter, I never read the part of Ryle and Lily’s story after that....just fast forwarded the story, to the parts of atlas, who means the whole world to me.

I just finished reading this book, 30 minutes ago. Honestly, it didn't broke me that much, maybe because its quite fast-paced for me (no hates please). But I teared up in some part, and I loved the insight. Makes me agreed on why we should asked 'why is he doing it?' instead of 'why she isn't leaving him?', and how it ends with us. And...I didn't know there's a sequel! It Starts with Us... that I'm scared to read. I just loved Atlas. Its October 2nd, can't wait to get a copy once available here.

I don't if I'm the only one who thinks Lily was also part of the cause for problems in her relationship with Ryle. She knew she could never fully love Ryle with Atlas in the picture but she still went along with the relationship while she carried around keepsakes from Atlas in her marriage to Ryle. And also the first time Ryle and Atlas meet and get into a fight Ryle give Lily a chance to end the relationship if she's still in love with Atlas and she chooses not to because Atlas told her he has a girlfriend then later when she finds out it wasn't true she admits she would have left Ryle in a heartbeat if she'd known then that it wasn't true and she and Atlas had a chance. So I know many people will still support Lily leaving Ryle and I do too but I don't hate him for what he did especially after everyone in his life including his family and best friend all turned there backs to him and don't get me started on how they butchered his character in "it starts with us" ruining all his character development so we can't demonize Ryle when it was also Lily's fault.

I think if lily ever told more about Atlas to Ryle, Ryle would had never Abused her. She should have told him about the magnet and never lie. Don't get me wrong I love lily but she should have said that all to ryle. When Ryle asked her to move from Boston, she said no, and that in marrige ppl should compromise. In my opinion she could have compromised, by throwing The Boston Magnet nd never read the journals. Or, how i just said, confess everything to ryle.

it’s so interesting how the same story can be told differently: I just talked about this book to my mom and told her how I don’t like the book, the story this, story that, writing style, etc. You told the same story, because we both read the book, but if I’m honest, I didn’t like it, and I don’t get the hype.

I think it varies depending on the person! I can see why people enjoy it but I can also see why people don’t like it - I was torn at first but I did end up liking it & I’m excited for the second book because I think it will really add closure

Just finished this book at this moment and I just needed to RANT!!! I can't deny this is a very good book I'd definitely rave about it for hours and hours but then nothings perfect, therefore I feel like there's something lacking specially the book tackles domestic abuse I honestly feel like it's a superficial depiction of how it really is? It lacked more emphasis is what I'm trying to say. BUT THIS BOOK? IT RIPPED ME TO PIECES AND I CRIED AND CRIED AND I'M STILL CRYING. This is the first COHO book i've read and so far so good! I'm really excited to see the movie of this book, i'll definitely need a box of tissue again when that happens. About the 2nd book which is The Start of Us I heard it's more of Atlas' story. I could not wait!! I definitely need to learn more about Atlas.

I think ryle deserved better . No defence to his actions they were definitely unforgivable but.... To seee how much he did for her . He left the chance to go to the best hospital which eventually will help his life goal of becoming the best in his field just for the sake of lily ... He literally killed his brother at one point in his childhood u can imagine how much problem he had . He asked lily for help .. And even if ryle is totally at fault . Then we cannot ignore the faults from lilys side tooo . When they were having a perfect relation why did she still kept things hiding from him . Why did she not honestly tell about the magnet . Maybe thats all ryle wanted to hear the truth .. idk this book has got me lost in it. its been a complete day since i finished it but it left me in a dilema and am just constantly thinking about it ....

I just hate lily , i understand she have gone through abuse But she should have atleast moved on from atlas before getting in a new relationship But if she couldn't move on, she should have just stayed single I understand what ryle did is wrong But there is no harm to say that , Lily's not moving on and lying to ryle are the reasons that made him do that *Again* I don't support ryle's actions I just hate how lily basically fcked his life Overall, the book is amazing

Lily never lied about atlas. She was ready to embark on a future with Ryle. He let his anger issues and insecurities get the the best of him. Even if atlas never existed abusers such as Ryle will always find a way to abuse someone. Don’t hate lily that’s basic victim blaming.

I enjoyed this book & I could understand the hype around it. It’s real life situations with a little flare - but nonetheless it’s all a matter of opinion 🥰

@@alexaraye absolutely it is a matter of opinion. But I maintain that "masterpiece" is objectively hyperbolic! 😇 I found some elements of their relationship and her trauma response authentic, but so many other aspects of the interpersonal relationships were unbelievable, and the contrived and the trope-ish elements permeating every other aspect of the novel took me out of the story itself, and made me unable to connect and suspend my imagination. I was in an abusive marriage from my late teens to mid 20's, so there is much I should have been able to relate to here, hell, I even owned (and still do) my own business, but I was unable to because of the general unbelievability of so many aspects of this novel. Maybe I am just too old and jaded for these first romance type novels.

Literally things would have worked out between Lily and Ryle perfectly if she had put her ex and past behind I know she was hurted but the first time Ryle pushed her he said it was mistake and he even apologized I was mad at him for that but the second and third and all it was all.bcoz of Atlas and I hate the fact that Atlas was the soul purpose of most of their fight but lily just keep on going back to him over and over again that women didn't even try to understand her husband I think Atlas tried but I see no efford from.lily she was basically still love struck with her ex and I most hate the fact that she added apart of her and Atlas to her daughter name dory fucking hate that when Atlas was the sole purpose of their broken relationship

How can an author who has witnessed something similar create a book about romanticizing these sort of relationships? Young women will pick this up and think its okay to let your abuser redeem themselves. Not only that, she clearly doesnt care less about how it affects her readers, shes just in it for the money.

For anyone who has read this book and (spoilers) got interested in learning more about domestic abuse or toxic relationships I HIGHLY recommend the following books! *Why does he do that by Lundy Bancroft* The author is a counselor who specializes in working with abusive men. It's a must read if you ever had any abusive men in your life! I'd even go so far as to say that every young woman who dates men should read this book before getting into a serious relationship. *Helping Her Get Free: A Guide for Families and Friends of Abused Women by Susan Brewster* This is a must read if you have even the slightest suspicion that a person close to you is an abusive relationship. It's an amazing resource to offer real meaningful support to people in toxic or abusive relationships. Even if you don't have a friend in this situation, this book has helped me become a better friend and a better listener! *The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence by Gavin de Becke* this one isn't specifically about domestic abuse, but a great book to train you to trust your gut and fear response, to catch dangerous situations early.
