As a kid who grew up in a household with domestic violence happening on a daily basis, this movie hits different. I've never really seen things from my mother's perspective and it hurts more to see that she may have been happy like Lily in the beginning until my dad started hitting her. 💔
@aleksandravalchanova57974 ай бұрын
have you read the movie? if you haven't i strongly recommend it. my sister was in abusive relationship and even though i tried being next to her and supporting her through the ups and downs i always judged her in my head even though i never said it aloud. this book made me rethink all of my "believes and understandings" regarding abusive relationships. not only is the woman happy at the beginning.. but she continues to be happy in between the moments there is not abuse, and when there is your heart somehow convinces your mind that things don't add up: he cannot be such a bad man when he made you fall in love with him, when he takes care of you and loves you... it is a divine book and i think all girls and women have to read it, it is not a romance, but so much more
@FirstNameLastName-wt5to4 ай бұрын
Vast majority of cases, the abuser does everything right in the beginning. Once they believe you’re trapped, that’s when the abuse starts. And then it’s a cycle. Abuse followed by going back to who they were before until you’re comfortable then start all over. It’s the same strategy cults use to brainwash you.

As a victim/survivor extreme violence from my ex husband and the father of my children, this would be a tough one to watch. Especially the words "one day you have a daughter and she came to you and told you the person she loved was hurting her, what would you say".... I said those exact words to him when our daughter was born... And then I had a son, and the fear of them being harmed mentally or physically, drove me farther away than being s/assaulted or being strangled. We got out 7 months after he was born, being nude and left for dead in the garage whilst he took off leaving our children alone and in bed, having my 2 year old find me and essentially save my life, we left the very next day. Hurts to see movies that portray or even romanticize these sorts of relationships, I know it's only a trailer for a movie but jeez, I wasn't mentally prepared.

@@stephoso Well I met him when I was 15. We started dating when I was 18 and I was pregnant by 19. He is 12 years older than I am. I am now fully convinced he groomed me way back when we first met. I didn't know the reality of how bad it all was until I was too far in, the red flags were there but I was so deep in the middle of it that I wasn't able to be objective. I was utterly brainwashed into thinking it was all part of being a part of a long-term adult relationship. I must mention he was/is very good at manipulating any situation and me and others. It wasn't until the hospital staff told me after I drove my heavily pregnant self to the hospital after a violent assault, and they saw his size 12 steel cap boot print on my thigh, after I just told them that I slipped in the bathroom, that I was even told it was DV and wasn't relationship drama or normal problems to endure at all. It was horrendous to endure and to have that mindset of victim blaming is just being an absolutely shit human and unless you've actually been in the situation of fighting for your children's and your life and living every day in flight or fight mode, walking on eggshells every single day, out of fear for your children's safety, you really don't have any valid opinions or rights to tell the actual survivors how they should feel or what it's like to be in that abusive dynamic. I wasn't and will never, ever be a perpetrator of violence towards my kids, I saved them, like I saved myself, and did everything in my power to keep them from all of it. I was forced to have our second child, he was a product of rape. I had 2 miscarriages, both same circumstances, but I lost them after being assaulted further, one that I lost was between our 2 living children and one two months after my son was born, that wasn't ever my choice. Literally no one outside of our relationship knew the full extent of everything going on at the time, the people closest to us had an inkling but not proof until things came to light and I finally found my voice after the incident whilst being pregnant with our second child. I put things in place immediately when I found out what was happening and what the relationship truly was, to start making steps to get away, we were in refuge for almost 2 years. I did everything to protect my children so to have people even lightly suggest I abused them or put them in harms way by staying, Jesus, just take a step back and realize life isn't that simple and leaving is incredibly dangerous. Especially when dealing with a very possessive sociopathic narcissist that doesn't care about anyone or anything unless he controls it completely. I had to placate him for months so I could bide my time to make a plan to keep my children safe. He said too many times that if I was to try to leave, he would murder my daughter, my son, my family in front of me, then himself just so I have to suffer forever. That's just a miniscule amount of the shit I went through, not even scratching the surface, I would be here for months explaining everything that happened during the time we were together. You have no god damn idea what it's like to "live" like that. That's what I'd say. :)

Justin Baldoni playing Ryle is imo excellent casting. The whole point of Ryle is to highlight that abuse comes from those who we least expect it which in turn contributes to the vicious cycle. Justin himself addresses topics like toxic masculinity and misogyny through his man enough podcast and I think the choice of him not just to direct but to play a character such as Ryle further shows that it really can happen to anyone. It reminded me of casting choices from Promising Young Woman where there were intentional casting decisions to further the message of that movie.

If they casted someone younger, they would have said something too. I think, given the very mature, triggering plot points in the book, they had to go older. Think about if they cast someone younger (maybe looking to get away from Disney shows or something). They would come with a large fan base of young people, who would want to maybe go see this. In my opinion, it's a little too heavy for someone who is 12, 13, 14, even a little older to see or even read. I get you have different people in your head but with a subject like DV, there has to be a nuanced sense of maturity and Blake and Justin have that.

I imagined lily's hair to be more red than this one and Atlas , to be cute, clean- shaven guy and Ryle was even more handsome and charismatic. Allysa, of my imagination was a chubby , reflecting her personality. Literally for me, the character's depicted in the movie doesn't match with a reader's imagination.

All the baground matches my imagination, like the flower shop, and the apartment, and the little place where lily used to share an aprtment. I cant feel the anxiousness in lily and rhyle. And the ending line is also not that emotional where lily gives her decision to rhyle and it ends with us happened.7/10

That’s kind of the point, the book is beautiful on its cover to show us that when girls get into a relationship they see beauty, and by the time they keep getting abused their not focused on what he just did, we are focused on the beauty of that person

It's true that the youngsters like us, like to imagine stuff in a very unrealistic way. Making the characters too pretty and the story to perfect. But the story should and is supposed to be a adolescent romance. And that's the reason it resonated with most readers. The chemistry. The spark. The high emotions. The kick of the plot is what made this book an exception. Can't deny that. That's what didn't meet the exception. The age of the actors or their looks is just an excuse cuz i personally think Atlas with a beard or without doesn't change the kind look in his eyes lol. But yeah, the expectations were damn high!

Everyone talking about how they’re disappointed with Atlas’ actor (I think he’s actually a good choice) but who’s actually disappointed with Ryle’s? I sure didn’t imagine him like this 😶

I actually think it has potential and it was smart, but they aged them up. And I don’t see why everyone everyone’s being so negative it actually looks perfect. People think it’s bad Needs to calm down. It looks AMAZING

Putting this in the main section and keep in mind, I have not read the book but I have seen and heard enough about it: If they casted someone younger, they would have said something too.

Not how I imagined the characters to looks but the actress is amazing and I love her, and I think they definitely took actors who would make the characters acctually look “grown up” instead of the kinda actors that play teenagers.
