They probably do this on purpose. The way it was marketed and the way the book starts, it feels like they want you to fall into the trap that this is just another romance book at first so the message of the book is more impactful at the end. Not saying I agree with that choice
@lauravsthepage2 жыл бұрын
Colleen Hoover writes a lot about abuse, trauma, and mental health. I find there is often triggering subject matter in her stories. If you are someone who has triggers you should avoid, there are websites that you can search that will list them all for each book. It Ends With Us is listed as having scenes of graphic domestic violence on the sites I am looking at. I think assuming romance books will be just sweet and happy is ignorant of the vastness of the genre. Just because something is listed as a Romance doesn't mean that it wont deal with intense subject matter.

THANK YOU! I literally didn't like him from the get go. But I think what it is is that alot of girls are conditioned to side-eyed or brush off "minor" level of creepiness because in the media we're told to believe that behavior like that is normal because it's for the sake of love and the main character is handsome. Like it actually took me some time to realize how weird it was that Ryle got a portrait made of the picture he took of Lily only after meeting her once. We've been conditioned through many movies and media depictions that if a guy is handsome and has a tragic backstory then his actions can be excused because "he can change".

ykw i like ryle, yeah HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE RAISED HIS HANDS ON LILY. nad nothing can be reasoned with that. but the thing is he was not all bad. he had some really good qualities. how supportive he was of lily from the very beginning. how he turned down his promotion and didn't move out of boston. how he never wanted to be in a relationship, never wanted to get married. he did that all bcz he fell in love. meanwhile lily still loved atlas. lily was never 100% in with ryle. he had the magnet the books and she even kept the number than lied. just think about it.

@@shreyab6698 Assuming he didn’t take any years off and was “on track”, then he would’ve finished med school around 25-26. Residency is 4 years which would make him 29-30. YES but also I felt like "People We Meet on Vacation" makes more sense when you've read Poppy's monologue in the last few pages. (SPOILERS) Because I understood it like she explains that she always wanted to travel to meet people that would accept her as who she is and she searched for that adrenaline rush and the intrigue, but in the end she notices she doesn't need to find new people on vacation for that anymore because Alex gives her all of that. So Alex IS the people on vacation she searched for. And I think that makes the title actually genius.

Oh my god I hated that book, the most out of any book I've ever read! I did finish it in hopes that the ending would make it worth reading, but it didn't do it for me. In fact the ending made me want to burn the book! I'm always baffled that so many people say it was a great book since I have such a strong opinion that's completely opposite hahaha. You aren't wrong for your opinion and shouldn't feel bad about liking it by any means, no hate to you guys or the author, it's just so strange to me. Just for fun, if you guys were to try to convince me I'm wrong for hating it, what would be your top 2 or 3 reasons that you personally loved it?

the anthropocene reviewed also has another aspect to it, that makes it more appealing to me. It shows how the mind of a person living with anxiety works. If you can empathise with such things, it hits differently. I think John Green touches your soul by opening up his broken one. It makes it personal and intimate.

Jesus Christ is Lord. I’m serious, the Bible is truth. If you genuinely open your heart to Jesus Christ and do the inner work and personal reading something amazing happens. The key is in forgiveness. Start with your parents. That’s an important key that shows a lot of faith and love to God. They’ve loved you. So it should be easiest. Genuinely mean forgiveness inside your heart. Afterwards, breaking down before Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness for yourself takes on an entirely new form. To be forgiven we must forgive. Until you take the first step on faith God stays at arm’s length. Jesus Christ teaches that in Mathew. Please, just see what it’s all about for yourself by personally reading these three books of the Bible. Genesis, Mathew, and one you chose yourself. Please, see what I mean for yourself. Just be genuine. It’s not hard. Please

i clicked on this video exclusively to hear your take on project hail mary (my favourite book by my favourite author) and I was NOT disappointed!! i was absolutely OBSESSED with the way he built the character of ryland grace over the story and the way the flashbacks were utilised to add depth and then completely change the foundation of the character in a way that actually improves their depth??? stunning. not to mention the absolutely INSANE plot and the cool characters that we get to know as well as grace. I absolutely adored "The Anthropocene Reviewed" ^_^ Reading this book felt like chatting with your intelligent & funny friend about all kinds of diverse topics, complete with many personal anecdotes and random facts. Enjoyed this book much, much better than any of his previous works of fiction. This book was a pleasant surprise. I've watched Vlog brothers (John's KZbin channel with his brother) for years and I felt like his personality really shined in this book. Yes, some parts of the book touched upon the initial stages of the pandemic; but I think there's so much more in this book than that. John's writing style is beautiful and many of the essays brought a sense of hope & wonder of the world to me. I highly recommend this book 👍

I don’t think anyone realizes that It Ends With Us is a romanticized book about domestic violence. The intention of Colleen Hoover was to inform the readers about the gaslighting, emotional and physical abuse, etc., but *SPOILER* the ending was not it. The time Lily went to Atlas was not it. Lily, Atlas, and Ryle are all cringe-worthy. It was weird enough how the story only ever circled around Atlas and Ryle and their love for Lily, but the fact that the story ended with Ryle still being friends with Lily, and Atlas ending up together with Lily - what was that?? It gives the readers a a false sense of what really happens in domestic abuses. In real life, it’s not happy ending; you don’t end up with another man, yet again; and life is not perfect like that. The writing was good, I can say that, but the whole story and the whole plot was a red flag. When authors write stories about domestic violence, one can only hope that the victim don’t end up with a romantic relationship again - as if to say that you can only be saved/happy with a significant partner, and that you should be okay after experiencing that type of abuse because in the end, you’ll have a happy-ever-after. My two cents on it.
@disappearinghills2 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes, yes! Completely and utterly agree with you. The book is a pure disservice to real victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault by reinforcing Ryle’s continued involvement with Lily and the baby. Ryle was a manipulative rapist, why give him a villain backstory WITH a redemption arch? The plot and details were honestly the laziest thing I’ve ever read, of course Ryle is a mega rich surgeon and Lily’s best friend also married to a multi-millionaire whom just happens to be Ryle’s sister. It’s so tone deaf to the real reality of women who go through rape and domestic abuse, and might have been written better as a horror. Honestly Ryle deserved so badly to go to jail and Lily should have cleaned him out for his money but instead he didn’t receive an OUNCE of punishment which was perhaps was the worst part of this badly written book. It literally gave the impression that if someone has a sob story they are simply allowed to walk away with no punishment, which completely justifies men being allowed to rape women and get away with it so long as their... remorseful?

@@disappearinghills The title of the book is It End With Us. But it doesn't end with them. Lily still gives her daughter to Ryle without supervision in the end. That's totally dangerous. 😭😭😭

I guess the author wrote about her own experience and what she witnessed between her parents as a kid. If you read her notes at the end she stated that the story was inspired by it. She mentioned her father wasn’t a bad person. He “just” messed it up with Colleen’s mother by being abusive. Then later her mother married an Atlas type. Her father was never abusive with his kids (Colleen and her sisters). I guess she wanted to point out that just because someone is abusive with their partner they can behave differently with their own kids. (Now that’s an other question what kind of example they show..?) Now I don’t know what statistics says and whether this is an exception or not. The book is very tunnel visioned. It’s a fact. I didn’t like it either. It just made me feel bad and I didn’t find it ok that Colleen didn’t mention anywhere that the book is about domestic abuse. There were a couple of things I liked about it but for me it’s a two star read
@emilyflorencebatty2 жыл бұрын
I agree in a sense but I guess you could say that maybe atlas and even ryle were both (literary) devices to show the contrasts of an abusive relationship - she had only ever known abusive relationships eg her parents - and the relationship she really wanted and deserved. Perhaps atlas allowed her to see the wrongness of Ryle and that she didn’t deserve the abuse she got. So by going to him in the end, she’s accepting this truth, and the love she actually deserves. And I guess it is describes as a love triangle novel (I don’t agree but it’s still Hoover’s intention) so it makes sense for her to choose. I still would’ve liked if it was like Waitress though, her choosing herself and her baby, leaving her abusive partner and rejecting the married man she loved whilst still having an appreciation for how he allowed her to see she deserved more than her own husband.

Anyway, thanks for adding this crucial context!!

It Ends With Us - (bear with me whilst I scream). I read a lot in my work breaks and got in trouble with my colleagues last year for “only reading horrible books” after devouring two back to back books over three night shifts x one about domestic violence (behind closed doors, ba Paris) and one about a terror it attack on a plane (falling, tj newman) (I highly recommend both, they’re amazing). I picked up this book in January, again on nights and proudly announced to my colleagues, “look i’m reading romance for one guys, remember this, it’s not going to happen again any time soon”). Boy was I wrong. I initially fell in love with Ryle (bar his name and the scrubs because that’s just plain nasty) and then as the book went on, spent the rest of my time screaming and cursing and really feeling for Lily. What Colleen writes at the end about her inspiration to write the story is beautiful and I found the whole story really really powerful and i feel it helped me understand these men and women who are abused by someone they love so much better. So, thank you Colleen and thank you for your thoughts too that I found quite interesting throughout this video

From what I understood, it wasn't meant to be showdown to begin with, more of a test of endurance, thinking that the better style/philosophy would prevail simply by outlasting the other. It was expected that it would go on for years until one of them couldn't take it anymore (physically and mentally I suppose) so Celia found the loophole and wanted to take herself off the board. But yeah it was sort of disappointing and the Goodreads synopsis is totally misleading XD

@@catinahat3347 This is the point, it is super weird to me any of them will be "couldn't take it anymore" because it is simply just living the lifestyles they choose. If it is really about philosophy, and that one can't keep up with their promise or whatever, there should be some kind of difficulty that they confront with and let them doubt if their initial belief is wrong. Or that they get bored of being immortal and keeping the same belief over a long period of time. (it is not in the setting but a possible way) Or that they feel so uncomfortable that they are being watched by their teacher(master? don't remember the words)--if that's the case they should rebel against their teachers. Or maybe they kind of having some daddy issues or other mental illnesses from over-controlled parents. NOT ANY OF THEM IS HAPPENING. They simply gave up without confronting with any obstacles.

@@anniemeridian270 I think the idea was that every manipulation/magic thingy they did drains energy, like they both protected the circus and the crew and had to keep their tents operational, not lose focus or those would all fall apart. So I guess I meant "couldn't take it anymore" as a sort of exhaustion that comes from concentration non stop like that. To be fair, the fight of philosophies was more between the guardians than their pupils, they just wanted to prove through the people they trained that their method is better. Celia and Marco couldn't leave or refuse to compete because they got that ring binding done before they even knew what was going on exactly and that caused them debilitating pain if they actually thought about dropping out.

@@catinahat3347 That is a realist assumption. Unfortunately it is not presented in the novel itself explicitly though. I don't see any of them suffering from simply doing magic (running out of magic)?

11:57 I read Project Hail Mary recently because of this video and I it was amazing! It's a fun, heart-warming sci-fi space adventure. I switched between reading it and listening to it's audiobook (narrated by Ray Porter). I highly recommend the audiobook! The voice actor did an awesome job. I would say more about the story but it would be spoilers. Such a good book. Thanks for recommending it Jack ^_^
