Yes! I felt exactly the same way about this book - my dear friend gave it to me when I was moving away, starting a new chapter in my life... I didn't appreciate it as much at the time, but it's a treasure as I enter my 50s. I love how books can be appreciated differently at various phases of our lives. I love the complexities of a woman's soul.

Yes, I agree Gifts from the Sea, that is one of my favorite books. I read it during 2020. And I marked portions to come back to. I am a grandma with a 21 year old down to a 11 year old. I’m enjoying watching my children raise their own children. I love her beautiful expressions of life. Thank you for the lovely reminder of books I’ve love.

We had a quote from Gift from the Sea in our wedding! I recently got back from Florida myself. I did not take the van. If you swing by Jacksonville, I strongly encourage you to stop at Chamblin's Book mine. They have a cafe/used bookstore downtown and a warehouse by the naval air station. Amazing selection. Have a list or. you'll easily get overwhelmed.

A perfect book to read on an island in Florida. My mother gave me this book many years ago when I was 34 years old and now that I will be 60 in a couple months, I should read it again because I’m sure it will be a very different experience. I enjoyed this video and you have inspired me to reread this book. 🐚

I have read Gift From the Sea several times. There are things I really love about it and some that I don't. It has been a while since I read it last. It is definitely a book that is appreciated differently in the different seasons of our lives and as we have lived more. I also saw the similarities to Walden.

I should re-read Walden sooner rather than later. And it sounds like you and I felt the same way about Gift from the Sea.

It's absolutely beautiful on Sanibel and Captiva! Although, at the moment, they are still recovering from the September 2022 Hurricane Ian. I biked everywhere instead of driving, and realized that is my idea of paradise. Thanks so much for talking about this book a little while ago, because I honestly had forgotten all about it till your video.

I read the book in my early 20s and I think I was too young to appreciate it but would probably do so now. I do have The Loss of Eden, a biography of the Lindberghs on my shelf. I am looking forward to reading that. Enjoy your getaway and kudos on the bike ride!
@RoadReads11 ай бұрын
Thanks re: the kudos for the bike ride! I felt triumphant. 😎 Loss of Eden was written before the world knew about CL’s 3 other families. As was Berg’s bio on CL. I should see if there’s something more recent.

I didn’t realize that! I think I will pass then and see if there is something newer.

Such a lovely video to wake up to on a Sunday morning! I am so happy you are enjoying yourself in a beautiful location. Congratulations on making the ride to Captiva Island. I have not read “Gift From The Sea” but based on your recommendation I will be picking up the book.I adore the beach and grew up on the ocean. I have always been curious about her life. Are you aware of Lise Pearlman’s book “Suspect No.1” on the Lindbergh baby kidnapping? She alleges Charles Lindbergh offered his son for eugenics experiments and staged the kidnapping to cover up for his death. I have not read it but it has been on my radar.
@RoadReads11 ай бұрын
I haven’t heard of that book but I had heard conjecture that CL was responsible. Highly unlikely I would think. But then who ever thought he’d have 3 secret families. Do you still live by the sea? Oh how I wish I did!

That sounds like an interesting book, thanks for reminding me I want to read Thoreau too, I haven't yet. It's interesting what I can tolerant in terms of older novels and the author's views. I think sometimes it comes down to intent and empathy. 'Recentish' reads: I couldn't tolerant the antisemitism in 'Trilby' by George Du Maurier (unsympathetic, unenlightened). Whereas 'Mr Skeffington' by Elizabeth Von Armim, though not modern in terms of race, gender, women ageing etc, has an empathy and a good understanding of human behaviour and people's motivation. (I read the latter before turning 50) as Mrs Skeffington is just about to do just that. My main frustration with the book was I needed a few notes, there were things I needed translating and google wasn't helping. It was an ebook but I looked at a second hand copy and there weren't notes in that either.

It’s a complicated topic: can you separate the art from the artist. For me, at least how I feel at this time in life, if I *can* then I will. I haven’t read Walden in years, but i do highly recommend it.
