Reminds me of what Bruce Tegner said in his books on self-defense including his one on police defensive tactics, that when it comes to teaching hand to hand it is not a prerequisite to be a blackbelt but to have a background in physical education.

There is a fair to excellent chance Francois D'Eliscu was my adoptive father, Charles Lehnert "s (142/144 Platoon of the 36 Army "T" Division) CQC instructor in 1942,

D'Eliscu also wrote a very obscure book "How to Prepare for Military Fitness", with very similar content. Something I think D'Eliscu and some of his contemporaries deserve more credit for is the use of Western-derived wrestling techniques in military unarmed combat. If you wanted single/double leg tackles and counters, D'Eliscu had it. If you wanted takedowns from the "Kimura" and even leg locks, Brown was teaching it to the US Navy in the 40s, stuff that Sakuraba was going to school the world on in the 90s. That stuff gets sidelined for the new trend every once in a while, but it always comes back to break the joints of a new generation.

The information is fascinating even if some of his training methods - and the casualties he was willing to accept among trainees - are a bit dated. My only complaint is the physical quality of the book. The reprint I got from them was exceptionally low quality. Water had gotten spilled on it somewhere along the line. Every single page had wrinkling and the ink had run to illegibility. For the price they are charging they could have spent a little on good quality paper and printing. Fortunately they replaced the volume. Good illustration is generally better in my experience than photographs for this sort of material. You get exactly and only what you want in there. There is no blurring, no extraneous backgrounds or shading to soften the eye's focus. If something needs to be emphasized modifications of things like line thickness really get the point across.

Another excellent rediscovery, thank you, Tommy. The book and the teaching complement the Fairbairn method and the German method, I think. More good exercises to add to my routine.
