People claim to be spiritual every day, and it's accepted and considered woke. It seems to be that as soon as we try to define spirituality in more context that people like you say they're all nuts. Believing in something more powerful and bigger than ourselves in a world with this much blood hate and tears isn't crazy.

They are stabbing the images of Jesus as they viewed it as iconography, remember the schism was still Christian on both sides so ripping the book would have been destroying a holy text

This was before the printing press. all those books had to be copied out by hand. Mostly by monks. the paper was made of animal skin, the inks were ludicrously expensive. The protestants didn't disaree with the prayers in the book, just the icons. so symbolically slashing it was their way of not destroying the valuable book whilst still denouncing the icons

It always saddens me when I hear stories like this. There's so much information that was lost because of ignorance. Tyrannical governments afraid that words in a book will open people's eyes. I have no problem with any religious texts, I've read a lot of each book. Not because I am a theologian, rather because I was curious about our evolution. It's amazing how many stories correlate to other stories in other books. It's also sad that at the end of the ice age the oceans rose 20 m and most of our civilizations were on the coast which means that most of our great libraries and other budding civilization markers have been buried by the Ocean sands. On top of that we had a few great fires throughout history that wiped out major storage hubs for some of the archaeological finds.

@@tethys17 It looks like modern recommendations are for clean (washed and dried) hands over gloves that can snag, tear, or wrinkle the pages.

@@courtneyr6645 you can dry them but hands secrete natural oils. Cotton gloves are best but the destruction of history goes far beyond physical damage in modern times.

Gloved hands are more likely to damage the books. All professionals I have seen don't wear gloves.
