As honest and straight talking as they come not to everyone's taste...but so what Barry didn't have to prove anything to anyone he did thing's his way just as everyone else does it their way. I absolutely loved seeing this again and seeing Barry's wife and home life his good lady also spoke from the heart and it's clear the love and trust they have for each other . I really felt for him when he got hit before the off just as the last race was about to start some charmer just happened to want a 'Monkey' on @ 20's which Barry obliged. ....🫣 I know this is from many year's ago and if my memory is right didn't one of Barry's lifelong mates another rails 'layer' leave him some very lucrative pitches after he died,? I would appreciate if anyone could confirm this as obviously I don't want to get it wrong. 🐎🐎🙏❤️

@adriansherman32903 жыл бұрын
Forgotten his name but he traded as Morry Levy. Used to go racing a lot at this time. Things were changing and it was just before the internet took off in a big way - Betfair. Still a few Jewish bookies around in the late 90s (my fave was Jolly Joe) but now there's only one, that I know of. Being an on course bookie is the mug's game. Why bother laying out exes when you can lay horses at home on Betfair and/or arb. If the game was still any good, you'd see lots Jewish layers at the tracks.

Odds can change/fluctuate near the start of a race and that horse must have been being backed everywhere and so the true Odds of that horse should have been shorter than 20/1 Barry didn't spot it in time to change his odds...the punter did and knew he was getting value at 20/1
@AnthonyWilliams-ew3wp Жыл бұрын
His son, Patrick, missed the move in the ring leaving Barry with 20/1 on his board. It happens. It meant that Barry was stuck with the bet and couldn’t hedge any if it back.Incidentally, Patrick is now a corporate partner in a decent solicitors firm.

You have to move with the times. Betting changed. There was a monumental change in the past 20 or so years, ever since the advent of exchanges. Though bookmakers still drive the exchanges, not vice versa. But it's corporate bookmakers, essentially number crunchers and traders, that routinely and probably automatically now with AI algorithms, ban or restrict (gub) to pennies any successful or prudent accounts. Old school on course bookies are prehistoric.

It is very easy for bookmakers to win. You'll get some races where every bar bozo will come rushing in at the last minute throwing tens of dollars on all sorts of runners and by definition nearly all of them are gonna come a gutzer. And they'll be taking stable money which is sometimes good and sometimes astray. They'll sometimes get hit by a move which turns out to be good. I know a bloke who recreationally went to the races and had a hundred on his surname namesake, and only because of that, but he was on it when it was right, and probably took a few hundred out of an on-course bookie in that single instance.

Exactly what I thought. Up to the legislation of Betting Shops and before there were far more ways to spend the leisure pound a majority of THe Bookies were Jewish as you can, clearly, see in the earlier shots. Once the De-Mob money dried up and the game got quieter most were nowhere to be seen...
