My unfiltered option on the publishing fanfiction stuff is people have gotten way to comfortable with access to fanfiction and fandom spaces and thats making people way to bold. No one can convince me that the rise in popularity of publishing fanfiction doesnt tie directly into people illegally selling fanfiction. People have gotten very comfortable getting super close or fully crossing into illegal territory to the point where its a matter of time before an author, studio or celebrity files a lawsuit or takes legal action that will inevitably affect fanfiction as a whole.

I'm a book seller and right before Christmas I had a customer come in and ask for "acomaf rysand's pov" and when we told her that it was fanfiction so all the physical editions she saw on TikTok were likely handmade or illegally sold she kept insisting "oh it probably just hasn't been published yet" 🧍♂️

1:55:35 🤣 Thanks for doing the hard work of recapping for those of us who weren't paying attention but love the (now ice cold) tea. Please do it every year so I can continue to be oblivious until your recap. I hate cliffhangers so I'd rather wait for the whole season to drop before I start watching.

The thing that gets me the most re: the whole RQ/Powerless discourse is that Victoria shows all FIVE Red Queen books in her video. Maybe if people stopped to think for a second, they could've realized that more books out in a series = likely to have been written and published first 🥴

59:00 THIS. This topic is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. We (white people) do not know how to build community and it’s really frustrating (for me at least). There’s so much emphasis on individualism within whiteness and it’s harmful for everyone. Also, the point that Grapie made about envy is so accurate.

Yes! I try so hard to call people stupid on TikTok cause they are and it gets removed so fast! But then I’ll see straight up racism or homophobia and report it and TikTok’s like “we found no issues” 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

No likely. People refuse to use their brains in general but it’s so bad on TikTok. It hurts my head

20:30 man, some folks really need to learn the difference between self-flagellation and sincere apology. like sure, you can pontificate on "oh i'm so terrible and pathetic for doing this (but only because i was sad so pity me please)" but can you genuinely say and internalize "this was wrong, there is no excuse, and i will do XYZ to make amends/do better"? though it's likely folks like stephen cooper DO know, but just don't *want* to admit they were wrong because that means making effort to change.....

didn't Victoria Aveyard admit on her tumblr years ago that Red Queen was just a mashup of what was already popular because she knew it would be very easy to market? no shade though, get that bag, nothing wrong with writing to market since people clearly ate it up

I remember when it came out that’s what people said about it/something I noticed when it came out. I never read it but the synopsis sounded like different popular dystopian books all put together

Late to the convo, but I agree with the chat about Xiran. Actually, she reminds me so much of how Rin Chupeco used to be on Twitter before her own controversy. Hopefully, she doesn't go down the same path...

Just looked up sherwin-williams' brown paint colors and those names would be equally racist if not more racist compared to food.

i just want to say that blake lively and the other actors were apparently told to avoid discussions of domestic violence unless asked about it directly in promotion. justin baldoni just did anyway, probably for those sweet sweet male feminist points. and he was head of production and didn't have to answer to anyone. blake lively really had no choice in how to promote the movie. i'm pretty sure it says this in the article.

This was part of my point! That the direction of the marketing of the movie fit in line with what we already knew of the marketing of the book, regardless of whose idea it was and inclusive of who was delivering it.
