Southern Vs Grambling State Drumline Battle Bayou Classic Battle Of the Bands 2012 , New Orleans, LA

I was in drumline in school and our directors always talked down on bands like this that aren't in all these DCI competitions but I can't help but love it! All these negative comments about how they aren't like the DCI corps need to chill out. Anybody that can keep a crowd entertained is alright with me. That being said, that dude telling Grambling they were garbage clearly wasn't watching the same battle I was. Southern was all over the place!

+Tand Zgaming That's how it sounded to me. I never played in a drumline but I adore percussion so all I have to go on is my ears. The Grambling team just struck me as being better and more synchronized. More poised, too.

It wasn't just the sound of the drums, Grambling seemed to be a lot more prepared for this. Their snare line sounded much more professional in this and so did the rest of the drum line regardless of how Southerns drums sounded.

These people kill me kmsl! They are doing this for fun and entertainment. This is not a competition where they are being judged! This is a different style called "show style" yes it needs to be cleaned up a lot, but in the end they are having fun and the crowd liked it, and apparently you all did too you took the time out to watch! I'm black, I play quints in a DCI band and I love it! I also love this style too! Look up North Carolina AT&T's band they do corp style and they are a HBCU. It depends on which style you like and it's also hard to be precise when you have that many people. At least they are in college getting an education and not in the streets.

Yup. Grambling whooped some ass at that battle. Southern's snares were so dirty it was hard to tell exactly what they were playing. Coming from a musical and visual standpoint, grambling out did Southern in almost every way.

I really enjoy this comment :) I've always taught corps-style bands, but I watched this video and was thoroughly entertained. This is such a fun style of music to watch and enjoy... I wish more of my students would have the presence of mind to appreciate the different styles for what they were... Military bands go equally unappreciated by lots of corp-style folks
@halllcrystal11 жыл бұрын
Both are very talented drum lines but the skill of the red and black team won my vote!
@richardturner407410 жыл бұрын
As I stated in some of the comments below, both styles can be blended. Here is another link to one of Norfolk States performances. This proves that the precision that the DCI guys always harp about and the show style that so many HBCU's are used to can co exist. Advocates of both styles should stop hating on one another. As a lifelong musician and fan of both styles, I absolutely love the fact that this drumline has found a way to do both. NSU MDFS Block 07 vs. NC A&T

The next I've ever seen Grambling but I have to give this to Grambling. Snares we're together, despite drop sticks, that happens. But full cadence's. Southern first round was great, but slacked after. Cymbals for Southern always good. Nice, ending sequence cymbals💪🏽💯
@NoahAngott7 жыл бұрын
Gotta give it to red on this one. Regardless of everyone's thoughts on corps style vs. show style drumming, you can plain tell which side has put more practice and dedication into their music, and their drums just plain sounded better. Everyone's talking about the stick drop, and it was bad, but accidents happen. Hell, I've even lost an entire cymbal for the length of a show due to equipment failure. What really sealed the deal for me was the awful cutoff at 3:24, that doesn't even belong in a high school line. Shows a clear lack of preparation and puts the tradition these lines represent in a bad light.

@RobertRodriguezdrummer10 жыл бұрын
I wish the DCI obsessed people would quit coming into these videos complaining everything. It's annoying, these drumlines are a different style. Nothing like DCI nor do they even try to be. (Yes, the bass drums are not muffled and in some cases tuned low.) This style is fairly common in the south with the all African American schools. (No the focus is not on being clean, it's about being entertaining.)
@Clemsonshawty10 жыл бұрын
Im sorry but what are DCI? I went to a white school so the band wasn't that big of a thing

regarding some of the negative comments emanating from some, not all, of the drummers from the dci tradition-you are not the pinnacle of musicality. Charlie parker, tony Williams, miles davis, Philadelphia orchestra, etc....yeah. these drum corps come from a different musical tradition than DCI. you shouldn't be surprised by the differences much less look down on them. notice their drums sound like drums and not skateboards gliding across blacktop.

The problem isn't their style here, I think I speak for all 'DCI people' when I say that there's a severe lack of music. Both colleges show a lack of respect for drumming as an art. They aren't harmonically tuned at all. Now, I'm from New Orleans. I know about Show Style, and I know about Corps Style. I like Corps Style better, but I've seen many good Show Style bands that 'listen' to the drum, rather than just try to go out in front of thousands of people and make an ignorant ass of themselves. This is supposed to be about the beauty of playing the drum, feeling the rhythm and vibe. I didn't feel anything, all I felt was my ears aching from a lack of synchronization and practice.

Everyone has an opinion, but you are wrong regarding a lack of music and lack of respect. I'm sure both college drumlines put a lot of effort in to their craft. I've been to DCI competitions and HBCU competitions as well. I enjoy both. Just like I enjoy Country Music, Hip Hop, Rock, and Classical music. All music has some great qualities to it. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad or lesser than the other. You just like what you like. FYI, DCI as an official organization was founded in 1972. HBCU schools like the ones above have been doing it a lot longer.
@dominiccampbell18110 жыл бұрын
Personally, I like both, as there are things in each style that you can't do with the other. Most obviously, you can't do formations with Show Style, but a lot of the stick play and performance stuff in Show Style would be almost impossible in Corps Style.

Being a former college Div-I drummer I can say that yes these guys are very good but as not as good as the Northern or Western schools. It sounds too dirty and it needs to be cleaned up. MSU, UNT, Texas State along with many others would smoke these guys. Bass heads sounds loose too. Focus on technique and modernizing the sound.......dancing and hollering can come later. Just saying....... Keep funding your public schools music program!
