I started reading last year (iam 26 yikes) I started with Mistborn.... iam now in love with Brandon Sanderson and half way through words of radiance and have spent far too much money on books... Reading for me, fills a gap left by traditional digital media; TV and Games just have nowhere near the depth of a really good book.

Another great topic, we can never have too many readers.... since I'm an old man and a fairly eclectic reader, I have some recommendations that might appeal to what I'll euphemistically call "mature" non-readers who might be interested in getting back into books. So, in no particular order they are - The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov - it's long but it's told in episodic form and, despite the fact it was written in the late 40s and early 50s, it's very prescient. You can read it as a series of interconnected short stories. It's classic science fiction written by someone who really knew how to tell a story. The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett - a mystery that most people will be familiar with because Bogart played the lead character, private detective Sam Spade. It's a fast read and, again, written by an author who knew how to spin a good yarn. Seven Days in May by Charles W. Bailey and Fletcher Knebel - a political thriller that is particularly relevant today given all the political turmoil the U.S. is embroiled in. The movie starred Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster and it was fairly faithful to the book, though some key elements got short shrift, in my opinion. Another fast read. A Lady of Resources by Shelley Adina - a Steampunk novel about a young woman in Victorian England forced to make her own way in the world when her wealthy family is suddenly impoverished. She's a resourceful heroine surrounded by interesting characters. For those unfamiliar with Steampunk, think of it as science fiction in a fantasy setting. A quick read and the first book in a fairly long series. Mr. Churchill's Secretary by Susan Elia MacNeal - A WWII espionage/political thriller about a brilliant young woman who, because of the paternalism in the UK during the war is relegated to being a typist at 10 Downing Street. It's an intelligently written, fast-paced novel about a fascinating period in world history with a wonderful female character. The Lonely Silver Rain by John D. MacDonald - the last novel MacDonald wrote about his protagonist Travis McGee, a combat veteran who lives on a houseboat in Fort Lauderdale and works as a "salvage" agent - he's someone you go to when you want something recovered that's been stolen or because you're in trouble and can't figure out how to get out of it.. There are many books in the series that started in the early 60s and McGee is one of crime literature's most iconic characters..What makes this book interesting for older readers is that it's a coming-of-age story. McGee has been footloose and fancy free until, in this novel, he finally comes to the realization that he's getting old and that there is more to life than another party, another adventure, and another beach bunny to bed. Hope this helps someone pick up a book again.

"Tell No One" is my favourite Harlan Coben. I read bunch of his books. I think he is great if you have never read for him before, but after reading 3 of his books in quick succession I started to realise that his books are very formualic, and that made the subsequent ones less enjoyable. Basically it become much easier to guess the general direction and where you should focus your attention. And even if you don't always guess who done it, your not usually that much off. Still, highly recommended if you never read for him before.

Thanks for the response and also thank you for your videos. Im not a good reader not because I can’t read but because I prefer to play games and usually books bored me. I havent read a good book since the Hunger Games but thanks to your reviews I started reading the Witcher. I found your channel while inquiring about the series. I played the game a while ago and got it again on the Nintendo Switch. When I found out there were I wanted to check some reviews and that’s how your channel popped up. Since then my daughter and I watch your videos. She loves reading and I used to read when I was younger. Im planning to read all the Witcher books. That will probably take me 10 years! 😆 Anyway Thanks again!

If ever I find myself in a reading slump, I take solace in the Discworld series. They're very overwhelming if you try to read them one after another, and Terry Pratchett is normally a specific mood, but his humour and satire always manages to get me back in a reading mood!

I have read a lot of these and I mostly agree. The one thing I will say about "The Book Thief" is that I feel it could be a good book to start out with but it isn't as light as some of the others and it can be very emotional. I could see that turning off some people wanting to get back into reading but might not be prepared to get that heavy yet. It is absolutely the best book I've read on this list and totally deserves to be recommended over and over

What got me back into reading a lot more traditional books in general - I consume fanfics like a mad woman - is the Powder Mage trilogy. Really good series, and each book is on the shorter side of things. Stand alones are a great thing to use as an accomplishment as well but tend to be longer. Something that really gripped me recently is The Queens of Innis Lear so I'd throw that on as one that is longer but could totally motivate you to want to read more.

Unwind by Neal Shusterman made me obsessed with reading again! Its dystopian YA, before the genre became oversaturated with Hunger Games knockoffs. It's written in a way that's super easy to get into, but still handles very complex arguments about what it means to be alive. It's also super disturbing, but not in a really grotesque way. It just seems like it could happen which makes it terrifying! It also handles things like religion and abortion in a really respectful way, it never comes off as preachy or anti-religious. He sort of lets you figure it out for yourself, which is one of the best things about Neal's writing!

I find that (good) middle grade books are great cures for my reading slumps. I think it’s because those authors are used to writing for an audience with shorter attention spans 😂 One that I just flew through is When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. It’s a sci-fi mystery set in the 1970s but with a contemporary feel, so, you know, it really has something for everyone
@arcticsprendogs4311

I always recommend Into the Wild by Erin Hunter. It’s a middle grade series about cats! But it’s very complex! You follow the main character as he learns an entire new culture and lifestyle, so it’s easy to pick it up as he does. It’s definitely written for a younger audience, but the authors keep reinventing things and you keep following new characters, so it doesn’t get old (in my opinion) and it’s addicting. ❤︎

I honestly would consider The Book Thief something for more advanced readers, especially those who have a known love of Historical Fiction. I love WWII books and found The Book Thief was really one you had to work for. And the way it was written was more confusing to me than engaging. It was definitely unique and hard hitting and worth the read, but I think non-readers might have a difficult time. For Sci-Fi, I would absolutely say the Illuminae Files because it is fun, fast paced, action packed and gives an amazing reading experience. For character driven stories with an emotional punch, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. One of the most beautiful books I have ever read that I feel contains something for everyone

Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. It's fantasy, but in a very playful way. It's a big series but you can jump on anywhere and pretty much read in any order. It's easy to read but offers hidden depths on pretty much any topic of Humanity. It's for all age ranges - has specific YA releases, but all books have clean language. It's hilarious.

I believe the book that truly rekindled my love for reading was Harmony Black by Craig Schaefer. I didn't realize that it was a new series that was an offshoot of the Daniel Faust series when I first read it, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the series. Some of my recommendations won't be new releases by any stretch of the imagination but I remember getting into them after a long dry spell American Gods-Neil Gaiman A Spell For Chameleon-Piers Anthony-first book of the Xanth series. Fantasy, humorous & clever(actually kind of pokes fun at fantasy tropes) I ended up reading several in the series & enjoyed them all. Another Fine Myth-Robert Asprin-first book in the Mythadventures series. Fantasy, humor, pun heavy word play, fun read. Also read a few in this series. Red as Blood, or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer -Tanith Lee-Dark Fantasy, alternative fairytales. If you're into fairytales/folklore & appreciate a dark retelling you might enjoy this collection of short stories as an introduction to the author Kino's Journey--Keiichi Sigsawa--this was turned into a wonderful anime series, it's theme driven & philosophical The Watchmen graphic novel Does anyone read Anne McCaffrey Or Marion Zimmer Bradley anymore? Dragon Riders of Pern should be on every fantasy lovers list :) I've mostly been focusing on The Expanse novels & novellas impatiently waiting for the final book & super happy the show was picked up by Amazon. Been doing a lot of re-reading of classic scifi & fantasy which is always fun :) Considering trying out the first couple Witcher short stories after I found out about the Slavic folklore/fairytale homages that author uses in his storytelling. I caught quite a bit of it in the show but I'm sure the books are even better :D

I started reading books again at the end of 2017. It's fun how things happen sometimes because it started with a movie. I was looking for something silly that would not engage my brain and saw 'Vampire Academy' and thought it sounded bad enough to do the job. Spoiler alert, I loved it and discovered the books. Then, still expecting a nice series full of fluff, I instead got my heart wrenched out of my chest and my soul beaten up. I felt in love with the entire cast of characters and I started 2018 reading book 4, 5 & 6. That was 160 books ago^^

Jules Verne. I know it's not so modern but Verne's books have so much charm and sense of adventure. Also I think Alexandre Dumas and R. L. Stevenson are a very good start. I like SF literature but I would find the writing to pretentious for a beginner. Also I don't know if it was translated in English or how good is the translation I mean even the title that I find on Google sounds wrong to me but Memories of my Boyhood by Ion Creanga is one of the best literature of Romania. Is the story of the 19th century village told from the perspective of the memories of Ion Creanga.

I have a friend who loved The Book Thief. She thought it was a 'striking story that authors could benefit from in a few ways.' (Close-ish quote.) I've not yet read it myself, however (I know, I know). But does anyone else share this view?

I lent Steelheart to a 15-year-old boy who wasn't into reading at all, he was only into action games... and he devoured it. Now I must find him something else to read. I don't own other YA Sanderson books, I just have Elantris (also lent to somebody, actually), Mistborn, The Way of Kings, and Words of Radiance. I have read Elantris and Mistborn - the First Era. Haven't felt motivated enough to start the other ones. So... I don't know what else he may like. Possibly Mistborn, but the books are big and he may get scared. 😅 I think he's into dystopian stories with male protagonists and a lot of action. Tomes - to be avoided. Could Ender's Game be an option? I started it some time ago, but felt like reading something else. Perhaps I should finish it and see if it's ok for him. Any other ideas?

Oana-Maria Uliu Skyward by Brandon Sanderson is another of his great YA books. It is sci-fi and has awesome space battles. It is a female protagonists but she is a badass and I think could still be relatable to young men as well.

@@M_aryAnne I know, but I don't have it yet and I haven't seen it in any bookstores here. I live in a small town. I don't know if it's available in any stores in a nearby city. If I order it from bookdepository, it takes it about a month to get here from the UK. I usually buy books from a used books store online, from local stores or from the sites of national publishers. I buy from bookdepository only when I want something very, very much and cannot find it elsewhere. The truth is I'm planning to buy something from them as soon as I get paid, but my budget is limited and I need to stick to the books I want for myself. I'm not saying I don't want to read Skyward. I'm just saying it's not a priority for me right now. I've got hundreds of books waiting to be read. The ones I want to buy from bookdepository are a couple of novels I've already read from the library and that I want to own.

Oana-Maria Uliu I understand that I’m the same way only buying books I know I will like. Hmm I don’t read very much YA I know the movie Enders Game was really good but haven’t read the book but based on the movie I think it would be a good pick for him too.

Scythe was actually quite boring for me. Heard a lot of good things. But the first two thirds of the book were quite dull to me. Took up a bit towards the end but Not enough for me to continue. Just my take.

The book thief was slow boring and hard to get through. I read it in 3 days and dreaded every moment 😕 it was extremely terrible to me. What got me out my slump was the hunger games.

If people don’t read then why would you recommend books to them? Any person can read it’s not hard it’s just not interesting to a non reader.
