The danger with this video is that, before it came out, I had no desire to craft tiny books for the tabletop. Now I must resist this sudden urge when I already have a bunch of other stuff half-done. Looks spectacular though, and with such simple materials it looks really doable. Even making a quarter of those books and making some piles with scrolls for dungeon scatter would be a good project. And taking make one book and adding a transfer onto it for some arcane glyph instantly makes a macguffin the party will hone in on.

If you soak the popsicle stick in water until it’s fully saturated and it will be more flexible. It’s the same trick I’ve used with actual lumber for years

100%, learning not to be afraid of color is one of the most important parts of crafting, and just painting in general. Even in the grimmest and darkest of settings, if you only use dark and drab colors, it will just make everything look muddy and washed out; adding a splash of color makes the entire piece pop, and even enhances the grimdark parts by giving them something to look grim and dark in comparison to.

Amen to the bold colors. The lighting at most game tables is always going to be underwhelming compared to how you're shooting that footage too, so any color pop to help players actually see what's going on is great. You could try doing a dim and diffused top down light in your footage to have it look closer to how a gaming setup would look like.

after 2 months a valiant return! haha I really dig the whole set. Your style has always been mostly fun and stylized which is what I like about it. "Cozy environments" When things are "simply" made and colored it makes you want to be in that place and stay for a while as opposed to something realistic and unnerving if that makes sense? You could probably do a sewer that I'd want to hangout in. That is your gift.

I think i'll mix this with rp archive's magnet methods. I'll glue the books to each other and drill some magmets into them and hide magnetic strips in the furniture, that way i can stack it as needed for each scene.

The open books would probably look really cool just by adding some waterslide transfers to the pages. You wouldn't have to go through the effort of painting text, but it would look like you did from a distance. Especially if you scratch out part of the transfer to break up the shape. I definitely want to try this now lol

If you soak the popsicle sticks in water, or perhaps even just apply steam, you might be able to successfully bend them. The principle is the same as traditional steam bending in woodworking. Great video, as usual!

Love the way those washes worked on the books! I like versatility in the things I make, so when I crafted bookshelves, I measured the dimensions of the shelf spaces, then glued the contents of the shelves to each other, instead of the shelves, so that they fit the shelves dimensions, then slot them in to the shelves as needed. This way, I can make only a few bookshelves, but lots of different things to place on them, so they can be used for taverns, libraries, evil sorcerers etc.

Also, to bend popsicle sticks, wet them if not enough, several ways to do this but soak them, then microwave a min or so to steam them, or lol steam them in a steamer, you can also toss some in boil water then remove, dry and carefully work to bend it, keep it in shape and when they cool and if possible with rubber bands or little clips to hold overnight and then you have a dry curved stick you can now glue on.

Just found your channel and now I'm binge-watching! So many great tips and ideas! Here's a tip for making aged, weathered wood: mix cobalt blue and either sienna or umber acrylic paints, then thin with water to make a stain-wash. It dries to a warm grey-brown that looks exactly like weathered old wood that's been out in the harsh sun for years. The sienna gives the wash a warmer undertone than the umber.

About that section where you tried to bend that popsickle stick thingy, it should be doable. Let it soak a bit in water, so the wood fibers get a bit more flexible. (And boiling that stick and/or slowly bending it over boiling steam could make it more bendable. I don't know if hot/boiling water will help here, but I saw something like that used in old techniques to form wood)

I have to vote for the plain-jane bookshelves. They look fantastic, they tell a story effectively, and they can port to most settings. I could easily drop those into a modern day investigative game. I've still got a pretty good stockpile of books from back when I was working on a library piece. I'd used craft sticks and heavy construction paper. Took one of the thinner craft sticks, cut them down to the majority of the size of the books I wanted, then painted them in an off white. I didn't bother with both sides, just a spray of the off white primer I'd gotten while they were stuck to tape. Used the construction paper for different covers, using different colors of the paper from it. Add a few details with fine tip, metallic sharpies and they work really well for closed books...not so much for the open ones, but great for closed ones.

For some bendable pieces like for the oval desk, cedar spills might work. Perhaps soaked in water and then PVA? I haven't tried it, but might be worth a shot.
@TheyTarget2 жыл бұрын
You might be able to bend the sticks by getting it wet. I know you can do it if you wet, bend, dry, repeat but that could take days. It looks close enough you might be able to get it with one attempt at wet bending though.

so a tip for making something that looks like leather, i came up with this about 15 years back when i was doing vampire bats for a GW army i had a bunch of wolf heads and tyranids bodys left over from other stuff so i make my own vampire bats with the tyranids small scything talons been used to make the wings along with my homemade leather type thing. so its really easy you just need pva glue, some leather looking paint (at the time i used GWs snakebite leather as it was what i had) and something the glue can be peeled off of when its dry, mix the paint into the glue and spread it out to set up in roughly the shape you want and whalla something that looks a bit leathery you can then cut it with scissors to whatever shame you want (mine was the membrane of the bats wings) something that may go well this that Drow Ritual table is maybe cutting into a human shape to hit at the drow been a bit naughty and having it draped on something.

Loved the bookcases, just recently did some as well, my method for the book was to print out book covers, wrap them around some foamboard, age it with wash (I also used AP's wash, I think it was light tone), and done.
