The way I look at a book that has an unlikable character or theme is that sometimes real life is like that, and while I don’t think we should romanticize it it happens and not all books are sunshine and daisies. I also think that I might be one of the few people who really liked A Court of Frost and Starlight! I just didn’t want Feyre and Rhysand’s story to end! 🌵
@mochibujo
@mochibujo 10 ай бұрын
I agree, I think that it's important to have unlikeable characters too, and not feel like we need to like every main character out there, or strive to be like them. They can just be people with flaws, not role models. I will admit I liked ACOFAS a lot better the second time around!!

writing villains or complex, unlikable characters is totally fine, you just have to observe how the narrative treats them, and if they are rewarded for their behaviour or punished
@mochibujo
@mochibujo 10 ай бұрын
I understand what you're saying, and although I agree to a certain degree, in the real world villains are rewarded all the time, so I don't necessarily think it's the author's job to pass proper judgement on villains. Sometimes it can just be a story, and it can be up to the reader how they want to interpret it, and what they want to take from the story. Sometimes it teaches us things if we can figure them out on our own, and not just be handed "the right opinion" wrapped up in a book.

I really appreciated your vent about people mistaking "writing about bad things and bad people" for "writer condones the thing they're writing about". It's a viewpoint I've been seeing more & more, and it both frustrates & disturbs me, so it's nice to see someone speaking up against it. On a lighter note, your spreads are as beautiful as always. I loved the accidental four seasons theme you made for the ACOTAR books.

I'm not too familiar with current pop culture (I mean mostly literature and movies) but even I get annoyed by this, just by hearing people talk a book withthis mindset you described. I thought those were maybe exceptions, but obviously not. There is lots to be said for authors that do NOT have the "villain" have their come-uppance, or having the social injustice solved within the novel or movie or theatre play. Oldschool political writers would consider it the reader's or the movie or theatre goer's responsibility to take this frustration or anger about the bad one being awarded, out into the real world and try to change things.

Totally agree about the morality of fictional characters! I find it super interesting to read about characters who do horrible things that I would never condone in real life

2023 have absolutely been a year of rereads for me. I’ve needed the comfort you talked about, of returning to a story you know and love. Oh and I was so happy to hear you called the audiobooks dramatized because I did that and so many of my American friends corrected me and said they were graphic audio, and yes that’s the company who makes them but I would still explain them as dramatized.
@mochibujo
@mochibujo 10 ай бұрын
I agree, "graphic audio" makes no sense haha! It's very much an audio play, in my opinion, and to be fair, even Graphic Audio calls them the dramatised versions haha!

I really liked your discussion about main characters that are not exactly morally upright. I think it makes books far more interesting and realistic. It never makes me think anything negative about the author. Fantastic video. I am glad that your cat is better ❤❤. I lost a dog and a cat within the last year. We had them both for a very long time and it was devastating. One was sudden and the other we knew was coming due to his extreme old age. I totally understood what you meant about pre-mourning their loss and how emotionally overwhelming it is.

🌵 I read The balada of the songbird and snake and I'm very conflicted with the ending 😂 I've would've wanted more information about Lucy and what actually happened to her at the end... but anyways, it is what it is! I love the Throne of Glass series! And the prequel, The Assassin's blade it's so worth it. I usually recommend reading that book after the 3rd one (Heir of Fire) because it really becomes relevant in the 4th book.

I had the exact same thought! It's one of those books where the author leaves you to make up your own mind about the characters. Both the protagonists and the antagonists do things that you may agree or disagree with... but you get very invested in them, whether you like them or not! It's quite a different type of story from a lot of the books in these videos, so normally l wouldn't think of recommending it here, but it definitely has that quality of not judging its characters, so to speak, just showing you their actions and motivations, so you understand them, and get to know them like your own family. It's an excellent trilogy and wraps up really well.

🌵 loved it, he spreads look beautiful, love the simplicity. ❤ haven’t read any of the books that you mentioned, I do agree with the comment about the author and the characters, I think the real difference is, f it was well written or not, nothing else, if the person doesn’t like the character or thinks is not a clean book, then go read Christian authors books then 😂 those ones are clean and do bring a sense of joy reading them. Although I did read recently a Colleen book, for the first time, I find to be very confusing ending, because it left a lot of unanswered questions, I wouldn’t recommend reading her books. Thank you for making this video ❤

Totally agree with what you said about characters being morally ambiguous, I think that lots of the times readers forget that characters they like most of the time (zade meadows, cardan greenbriar, the darkling) are not morally upright as well, they might “redeem” themselves with certain acts but not all of their actions can be excused E.g cardan bullied Jude for most of her life but all of that is excused because he’s “hot” and he fits into the narrative of a morally grey character destroying the world for the female main character (this does not make him a good person in general and people do not realize this enough)

There is a difference between authors writing morally gray/wrong characters or dynamics and not necessarily saying that’s the “right” thing to be doing, and knowingly glorifying morally wrong or problematic behaviours (re Colleen Hoover AND especially JK Rowling) 🌵

Seriously THANK YOU for your mini opinion section about authour’s writing about bad characters or bad decisions by characters. It IRKS me to nooo end when the person hates a part of the book because “oh the authour wrote it as if it’s okay”…. Do they not realize it’s meant to show the reader how that character makes mistakes and/or IS bad? How can they judge the book based on that. Maybe the authour writes that type of behaviour to show that it exists, or literally just because. I roll my eyes sooo hard when ppl lower ratings because of that.

Me who doesn't have interest in reading The Balad of... and loves spoilers: thank you, Hedda 😄😂 - Also, I agree with you, sometimes a story is just a story and is up to us to make what we can with it; and I've notice, a lot of people expect an agenda or to take sides, I don't know why this has become so popular now days but it can be annoying because it makes me think we should have this perfect society in which everybody must think in a very specific way that has to be pleassant for the majority... and you know, sometimes is not that deep, lol

I totally agree. I worry about this idea that there is one right way to think, and everyone else is wrong and bad. It's one thing in real life issues, but another in books - sometimes it's just a story, and not that deep, like you say! Some of my favorite books have morally grey characters, such as Babel and The Poppy Wars (R. F. Kuang is just queen of heroes turned villains I suppose), because it makes you think more critically, rather than just being handed a good vs evil narrative.
