The thing with the wayward children series is that I think they’re more of a social commentary through a fantasy lens rather than a fantasy book you read for the fantasy. When reading them with this in mind I find them so captivating

I just finished the trilogy, and Siege and Storm (the next book after Shadow and Bone) and it's honestly SO much better than Shadow and Bone. There's much more action, you meet the best character of the series (Nikolai) and it really sold me back into the series!

I loved this wrap up! Most wrap ups I watch just show each book and basically say "I loved this" "I didn't like this", but you got into the nitty-gritty of why you liked it/didn't like it & took your time on each book. I don't know, I just loved that! Been watching your videos for a long time now & love them so much! x

I definitely think you should continue with the Grisha trilogy! I personally think it gets better with each book. The first is my least favorite and the last is my favorite. But it also just depends on everyone’s individual tastes. I love the magic system, the character development, and the friendship/relationship building in these books, especially in the second and last books! And Josh and Hazel was fantastic! I recommend The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang since you liked that read!!

I love how you went into so much detail about these books! Usually wrap ups are just a list of books and some short opinions but these were full on reviews. I particularly loved the ones about the series. I haven’t read Shadow and Bone but I have read Six of Crows and loved it. I didn’t realise they were in the same world when I did that! I would recommend carrying on just so you have full context of the world

Okay, but have you read The Proposal yet??? It was just as good as The Wedding Date. I didn't like Shadow & Bone as much as SoC, definitely a glow up, but I thought it was worth reading despite being VERY much early 2010s YA. Lol. I don't understand the pull of the Darkling either. Great villain? Yes. Would I bang him? Nah, I have self-respect.

I love Celeste Ng! I wish she would write more books! On another note, I read the Six of Crows books and loved them THEN I read the Shadow and Bone series and it’s pretty much a 3 star series. But if you want to read King of Scars you pretty much have to read it. So maybe push through the next two book in between books? Great video!

I am the same way with fantasy books. That’s probably why I don’t pick them off often. I did enjoy the Grisha Trilogy, but I had to put Shadow and Bone down once and pick it up at a later time. That’s probably why I tend to lean towards contemporary more.

I think the Shadow and Bone trilogy is worth reading to the end. Personally, I love how the characters develop more over the course of the next two books. Also, there are a lot of easter eggs in the Six of Crows duology from this series. The reading experience is a lot more fun when you can understand those easter eggs :)

It looks like you read a lot of really interesting books the last few months Zoe! I'm planning on reading the Wayward Children series at some point, but I'm also a little hesitant. Hyped books are either a hit or a miss for me and lately it's been more of the latter. I read Grisha at the end of last year and honestly I wasn't a fan, at all. I had so many issues with it, but it's more because of the Russian rep than anything else. However, if you want to read Six of Crows at some point, the Grisha trilogy is where you're going to get your world-building and overall background because you don't really have any world-building in Six of Crows. Best of luck either way. I still have to read Crooked Kingdom and hopefully I manage to get to it soon, but so far Leigh Bardugo and I don't mix well. As for some of my favorite recent reads...I LOVED the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden (I read both Girl in the Tower and Winter of the Witch in January) and would recommend them if you want some great historical fantasy that takes place in medieval Russia. They're SO good. I also loved Circe by Madeline Miller, which is a sort of retelling of the witch Circe from the Odyssey. I would highly recommend Madeline Miller as an author if you haven't read anything by her before. I hope your March reading adventures are going well so far!

Some characters from the Shadow and Bone were mentioned in passing or appeared on the SoC duology. So it's not vital to have read the S&B Trilogy. However, KoS is a different case. It's kind of the "what happened after Ruin&Rising". So if you're not up to finishing the trilogy, I suggest reading summaries to get just the gist. 😊 I struggled with 'em, too.

I'm not a fan of "Shadow and Bone" series, but it's a product of the times that it was published in. However, the books really build off of each other, and the world expands. You don't need to read "Shadow and Bone" series to read "The Six of Crows" (which is fantastic and worth reading) but you do need to read "Shadow and Bone" to read "King of Scars" (which is good)
