Hey Booktube! In 2024, I'm getting it together and finally picking up books that have been on my shelves for years and trying to see if they will be favorites! The Nebula and Hugo awards seem to have many favorites of mine so I thought it would be a good way to pick up some recent books that sound interesting and finally getting to some of the books that have been on my shelves for 5+ years...

I love the Goblin Emperor! It's definitely slower and you have to check what the new words mean especially in the beginning but it's very cozy and amazing. There's a second book but it's not about the emperor anymore, I think it's about a side character in that world..

Ninefox Gambit has been on my TBR for a while too, but I never got around to it. I liked Phoenix Extravagant by the same author. The Locked Tomb series and Grace of Kings are on my 2024 TBR, I heard great things about both. I'm surprised you haven't read All The Birds In The Sky yet, because I'm pretty sure I read it because you mentioned it in a video. It's not an all time favorite, but I enjoyed it. So excited for you to get to The Goblin Emperor! Not sure if anyone has warned you yet, but there are a lot of titles (like this world’s version of dukes, emperors, etc.) that are completely made up and names that can be a bit difficult, but you get used to it after a bit. They’re all made up so it doesn’t really matter what pronunciation you come up with when you’re reading lol. I’m also excited to hear more about Calculating the Stars and The Deep.

Agreed! The Goblin Emperor is wonderful, but the titles take a bit to get used to. There are more books in the series, but they're based on a minor character introduced in the book, so this could technically be a stand alone. 😊

Mexican Gothic’s MC Noemí is 22, so idk if it can be categorized as YA, but still it wasn’t my favorite either. Too bad because the cover of Mexican Gothic and The Daughter of Doctor Moreau are stunning! I think you might enjoy Gods of Jade and Shadow (jazz age in Mexico with Mayan folklore/myths) or Silver Nitrate (Mexican horror meets Nazi occultism… I know you’re not a huge horror fan and although I gave it 3.75⭐️s I found it super unique and intriguing) by the same author though?
@amn384

Also The Ten Thousand Doors of January is a personal favorite, but having said that and having followed you for many years… I’m not sure it will be something you enjoy. It’s slower and meandering (which does not bother me one bit), kind of reminds me of The Starless Sea but isn’t super confusing, at least for me. But I feel like Alix E Harrow might not be for you. 😅 I’ve heard The Calculating Stars has…. really comical sex scenes. 🤣 Like it was so bad comical (I heard an excerpt), but the premise of the book intrigued me. Interested to see what you think. I’ve added The Goblin Emperor to my tbr, it looks so good! I also own The Unbroken. Seeing it compared to The Jasmine Throne made me pause though and I still haven’t picked it up because that was one of my most disappointing reads. 🙈 I also thought The Deep was horror for the longest time, probably because the title is similar to Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, or Seanan McGuire, but also the cover totally looks like it would be horror.

Really excited for this challenge! I have to mention that The Paper Menagerie IS on the lists, but because it's a short story collection, the short stories were, not the whole collection. IIRC the titular story won all 3 major SFF awards. The Locked Tomb series (Gideon the Ninth, etc) is great and at the end of each book it reframes the previous and it makes you want to reread them. Seveneves is great and I've been meaning to reread it! The ending isn't as strong as the first 80-90% of the book imo, but it's not Stephen King weak either.

I’m currently 250 pages into The Great Hunt (the second wheel of time book) and I think it’s a lot better than the first one so far. I read The Eye of the World in 2021 and thought it was just okay - I think the second improves on what I call “ incessant walking” (basically characters spending the whole book walking from one place to another). It feels like what’s been in the book so far feels important to the story and not just travel filler. Again I’m only 250 pages in but I feel like it’s paced better so far

The Ten Thousand Doors of January taught me to DNF. I knew from one of the first chapters that the story was not going to go the way I wanted it to go, and I silently gave it 2-3 stars only. Then I struggled to finish it because of being a completionist, and yeah, a 2 star read it was. After that, I ended up DNF'ing 6 books in total last year, and I'm so happy with that. 🥳 I went into the book with completely the wrong expectations. Visiting other worlds sounds cool (in my defence, look at that title! You'd think you'd be going places!), but you won't be getting Stargate out of this. Nor will you learn much about other worlds (that would be super interesting), because the story I found was more tell than show. The book's tags are Fantasy and Historical Fiction with some Magical Realism mixed in. Not Sci-Fi. I have learned that when the Magical Realism tag is used on a book, I need it more up front and central (Piranesi, The Ocean at the end of the Lane) than what this novel gave me, otherwise it's a DNF for me. I will probably also from now on avoid books that claim to have exploration of other worlds in it, but are not tagged Sci-Fi. 😭🙄 /end rant (I hope you'll like this book much more than I did.) Good luck on all the other books, because that Hugo/Nebula challenge sounds awesome. I have some of those books on my own TBR as well. Oh, I hope I speak for more than myself, but I hope you'll take us with you when you are going to switch books around on your shelves, because I always find those videos very interesting (probably a pain to film, though).

Ten Doors of January in my opinion is worse than The Future of Witches especially if the main gripe with the latter is that it is boring or that the language bumps you out of the book

I really did not like The Deep, but I did only use the audiobook, so maybe I would have liked it more if I physically read it?

I loved Witchmark ❤️ read it as an audiobook. It is historical kinda but not really, but also talks about race and social issues 🙂. Hope you'll like it!

I loved Gideon the Ninth and then had zero clue what Harrow the Ninth was even about haha, I read it without understanding a single sentence until the end. I'm curious to hear what you think!
