When my son was first exhibiting signs of his severe ADHD and depression in elementary school I got super angry with the school staff who in the meetings to determine if he needed allowances in school kept telling me "if he's labeled as having a disability that will stick with him the rest of his life." And I finally got so fed up after the 5th time of someone saying that in one meeting I went off. I talked about how labeling his disability wouldn't do him any harm, having a disability while in a public school and being treated like he was a leper was the harm. I told them THEY were the ones perpetuating this idea that having a disability is "bad" and kids should try hard to avoid having that label. Grrrrr.

Yes!!! We as parents were the ones struggling with this when the school wanted to get my son tested. My husband and I grew up on the 80’s when kids were actually bullied and separated and treated badly and we didn’t want that for our son. Luckily, my sons school is amazing. Once we had his diagnoses of ADHD, things got so much better. His teachers were all made aware of it and were so loving and helpful. They gave him the space and help he needed while also keeping him in class and involved with his peers. He has a case counselor, the school counselor and the district psychologist to help. The principal goes to special trainings and then gets together with me so we can go over methods and new ideas. It all depends on the school I’ve learned. I hope that things work out for you, just keep reading and learning and being a great mama that protects her kid!

I remember walking home everyday in middle school because the bus didn’t go to my house and I could’ve taken the bus with other disabled kids but my mom didn’t want me labeled “disabled”, and I mean I wasn’t innocent either, I didn’t want to be seen around the “special” kids, which I absolutely hate that I thought that way, but it makes me mad that that happened... and one time I had to walk all the way back to school to get my phone when I left it in the little pockets by my teacher’s door, I was crying from pain and exhaustion but neither of my teachers even bothered to ask if I was okay, they looked at me and looked away... sorry to go off on a tangent, but everything about that situation pisses me off I’ll add that I was just diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome the year I had to go back for my phone (8th grade) and I guess my teachers didn’t know but they knew I was absent a lot and I explained that I had to go to the doctor...

This is so interesting to me because my problems were similar but so different. while I dont have depression I have very obvious and severe ADHD. Because its stereotypes as 'cant sitting still disorder' my mom just kinda said oh okay, ignored it, and didnt tell me. my ADHD manifested in excellent schoolwork, great attention and very detailed assignments so it was never a problem. But it also manifested in never-done homework, terrible social skills, and executive disfunction so bad I can never do something if I'm not interested. no one picked it up. ever. I was just a 'gifted' kid who was abit quirky and it was fine. years later my hyperfixiation had gotten super super bad (to the point i forgot to eat, sleep, or move) and I'm scrolling through pinterest and see some posts. a little research spiral later and.... oh. I have ADHD. it was reading a book with a huge plot twist and looking back on everything in a new light. long story short, I have terrible ADHD and my mom never told me and no one noticed because neither my school or parents wanted me labeled with a disability so they pretended it wasnt there. you absolutely did the right thing and I applauded you.

The "the only disability is a bad attitude" hit different. I can never be just disabled and a person, it's always something I have to overcome. I have to change my diet, I have to work out, I cant look at my phone, i have to learn how to act like everyone else etc. Not for myself but for other people cause me being disabled is an inconvenience. Honestly, people trying to push me to be "less disabled" is the worst part of being disabled. But people dont realize that cause oh how tragic it is to be different

My cousin, who is a trans person, recently told me that they only used to identify with the villains of Disney. Only recently they have understood why and stopped feeling bad and self shaming or wondering if they are a bad person. Representation matters. Jen Campbell has a whole series on disfigurement and media representation that I highly recommend. Also, she has a video about how problematic is The great showman, which is a fantastic reflection.

Non-Canadian disability recs (full disclosure, I have not read these but have been doing research): DISABILITY VISIBILITY edited by Alice Wong, ABOUT US: ESSAYS FROM THE DISABILITY SERIES OF THE NEW YORK TIMES edited by Peter Catapano, CARE WORK: DREAMING DISABILITY JUSTICE by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, and MAKING DISABILITY MODERN: DESIGN HISTORIES edited by Bess Williamson. Also the Disability Visibility Project website which has essays by disabled BIPOC discussing the 30th anniversary of ADA as well as a podcast I think. The Paul Longmore Institute's KZbin channel has recordings of two events they hosted in partnership with the Project that include essay writers from the website and the book. Thank you so much for the ReadEHthon, Kayla! I read four books in the week (favorite was EMPIRE OF WILD).

Thank you so much for the things you said about disabilty. As someone who has been chronically ill for years, I'm always in the mindset of:"As soon as I'm better, I will be happy." Because that's what everyone tells you, because you "can't be happy if you're not as healthy and outgoing as the heroes in shows or books." Representation is so important, everyone deserves to have hope for their happy end. Amazing video as always.

Kayla, what a great video! I absolutely loved the whole discussion you had about the skin we're in!! It's already on hold at my library, but the way you talked about it reminded me of another book that I think you should check out - A mind spread out on the ground by Alicia Elliott! It's by an indigenous author and to me it also had the perfect balance of statistics on indigenous people in Canada and the U.S, and personal stories about her experience as an indigenous woman too. It discusses race and depression and poverty and a million other things, but the sections in particular where the author discusses indigenous people being murdered in Canada and the differences in the way their cases are treated by our government and media was just mind blowing! I've always know it happens in Canada, but the way the author describes it you can physically feel her heartbreak and devastation when indigenous people continue to not get the justice they deserve. It was truly a beautiful book, and I feel like I could talk about it endlessly too, so I really recommend it!!

When you were talking about how certain language that we don’t think about is actually unintentionally harmful or exclusive, it made me think of something I’ve realized I do that’s wrong recently that I wanted to share. Just in case other people do this too without realizing it: When I’m talking about race or reviewing a book with POC rep or messages, I always preface it with something along the lines of “obviously I’m white”, usually before recommending an Own Voices review or opinion. But I realized that that’s super not ok, because 1. White-passing POC totally exist and race ISN’T always “obvious”, and 2. That’s super ableist because I’m just assuming that everyone can see my avatar or visually watch my video and be able to determine my race that way. So yeah, that’s definitely language that I’m changing with myself

After watching this, I added 3 of the books to my wish list. He Must Like You, Washington Black, and Disfigured. They all sound great.

You were talking about the Book Can I Touch Your Hair and that you couldn't find out if the people involved were Canadian, even though the book was on a Canadian list. The authors are American (Alabama and Philadelphia_ however, one of the illustrators is from Vancouver, BC so part of the book is Canadian so, not a sham, specifically but loosely Canadian.

Yay! I’ve been waiting all week for this! I feel like you perfectly described the experience of reading The Skin We’re In. It’s so informative but personal and infuriating to read about the new stories in it. If you’re looking for more non-fiction, I read A Mind Spread Out on the Ground by Alicia Elliott for the readehthon and it was incredible!! It has similar educational content but a beautiful and deeply personal writing style.
