My hands on experience with AMT tweeters come from Martin Logan Motion speakers. First some amazing Martin Logan Vision soundbars (still the best soundbar I have heard for music). I have always been impressed with their sound, especially the tweeters. More recently I got a steal on a pair of the monster Motion 60xt and a pair of Motion 40s. They serve as a 4.0 in my guest bedroom right now and I love them. I am a Paradigm guy and feel the Martin Logan AMTs are superior to Paradigm G-PAL tweeters and very close to even with Paradigm beryllium tweeters. I consider that very high praise. I actually also like the look of the AMT tweeters, but can also understand the counterpoint as they are very "loud" as far as appearance goes.

4.1s are maybe the best value in the series, I was going to get them for too small room. Apparently they have better coherence and blend between the drivers ( it's hard to blend in the midrange dome properly, and it can sound to aggressive on some songs).

I was lucky enough to audition the EVO 4.3 and Lumina III back to back in NYC. In the end the midrange and bass (in addition to dare I say a more elegant finish) pushed the EVO to be my winner. Evo and Lumina are so similar in treble, clarity, and soundstage that in the end paying $500 more the Sonus Faber felt downright silly. I have had the Evo 4.3 for 2 months now and I am completely floored and in love with them. Love them!! What about my amp you say? After I settled on the Evo 4.3 I bought , demoed at home, and returning the Marantz 8006, Audiolab 6000a, Musical Fidelity m2si, Musical Fidelity m3si, and Yamaha 801. Finally I have settled on the Cambridge CXA81 and find its sound to be an incredible match to the Wharfdale Evo 4.3. The CXA 81 has now replaced my old Rega Brio (also a good amp). The soundstage, detail, and way the CXA 81 drives the Evo 4.3 is totally what I have been looking for. I listen through my node 2i and Rega RP6, mostly Jazz, Rock, and R&B. If you can afford the CXA 81 and Evo 4.3, stop looking and buy them and DON'T spend more. :-) Thanks for the great reviews Andrew! Reviews are always engaging and insightful. Appreciate ya

Just taken delivery of a pair of Evo 4.3s (2 days ago), and after the 2 day "burn - in" period, i've got to say that i'm loving the AMT. The Evos have replaced a pair of Mission MX3s, that, apart from the tweeter and the dedicated midrange driver of the Wharfedales, have very similar specs to the Evos. But the Evo 4.3s win the argument hands down.

I love ribbon and AMT tweeters. The most resolving high end drivers IMHO. A good dome is nice too, but nothing provides the clear, clean high end of a ribbon. I have Wharfedale EVO 4.2's and love them. The soft-dome mid mates with the AMT like butter.

I would compare the EVO 4.1 speakers to the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ speakers. The both have kevlar drivers and AMT tweeters, and they have a similar sound signature. The EVOs have a richer sound and better bass. I didn't feel like I am missing anything without a sub. The Emotivas have a big bump around 50Hz, they need to be behind a high pass crossover to fix that, especially when paired with a sub. The EVOs pair with well with the Keces E40 integrated amp (search KZbin for reviews). I run the EVO, Keces combo with Topping DACs E30, D70s and D90. The sound is very good with any of those DACs, but it does noticeably improve as the quality of the DAC improves. I have too much brown toned wood, so the white oak really pops in my room.

I just bought these a few months ago for my first setup. With a sub, they're excellent for me. I personally like AMT tweeters, as some aluminum ones can have harsh highs. I never noticed the color. I think it provides good contrast (at least for the black/white models), but maybe it's because I'm not a veteran audiophile that looks at a ton of speakers. The best speakers I've ever heard were the Monitor Audio Gold 100, which also have AMT's and pushed me in that direction.

Many AMT’s are poorly implanted, virtually all dome tweeters are even less musical. However EMT has the potential for much better range, dispersion, phase coherence and overall musicality than most other designs. We now use several types of EMT style monitors in our studio and some in my home, including some Monitor Audio PL200 II and a pair of Elysian’s- both of which replaced some more expensive traditional dome tweeter monitors that I had for years. The issue with EMT is generally the implementation and integration, not the core architecture of EMT, while the issue with most tradition tweeters IS the core architecture. And I still do have traditional monitor designs as well, including Focal and Barefoot. However, their strength is not their HF implementation.

QOTD: As an ESL freak, AMTs have always sounded like a compromise. I couldn’t agree more on what you’re experiencing with these EVOs: the only time I’ve been enamored with AMTs, it’s usually because there’s a clever bit of cross-over/tuning/driver-matching to cover up the issues.

I really don't know why you have an issue with the look of the tweeter? I have the Evo 4.4 and they look fine. Actually suggest you test these and would be interested how you find them against Klipsch and KLH. This series provides exceptional sound for the asking prices. Makes you query the value and point of many far more expensive designs.

I actually bi-wire my current Wharfedales, for my room, it adds depth to the sound stage. Subjective, hard to measure for sure, but my room and my ears. I'm also using a Schiit Loki to tune the EQ for certain recordings. Especially ones that are really bright. Happy listening!

To your question regarding AMT tweeters, I absolutely love them. I find them to be airy; in that they allow for great high end detail retrieval and transparency without being fatiguing to my ears. Mind you, my experience with AMT tweeters have been with Adam, Eve, and HEDD AMT tweeters. I did try ELAC FS 407 towers as well but they were definitely a bit harsh. Adam speakers are known to have more pronounced highs while Eve monitors are less aggressive but neither sounded fatiguing to me. Actually, quite the opposite. The specific tweeter design I dislike are horn-loaded tweeters. Mind you, my sample size is 5 or so speakers with this design so maybe my sample size isn’t large enough.

While out reviewing Elac Ref speakers I came across your Evo's and found that I actually liked their looks and especially the AMT's. The AMT Evos I saw were not bright yellow but more of a beigey brown color. They seem to blend in with the walnut cabinets and added character that I found not only pleasing but added more of a dynamic look that is missing on most book shelf speakers. I think that your comment " AMT's demand that one looks at me" actually adds to the attractiveness of these speakers! What happened to me is when looking at speakers with round dome tweeters, they became rather non event and lacked character. I didn't care if the grills were on or off? The Evo's definitely look better with the grills off! Nothing like a little dynamic character that is added at no extra cost!

I ended up buying the Wharfedale Evo 4.1's about 12 months ago, and I am really happy with them. They still have that Wharfedale signature I like, but they are a little more lively on the top end, I think a lot was borrowed from the Elysian range in the Evo range. They are really great. I am considering getting a set of Evo 4.2's to go on the front and move the 4.1's to surround. I have found with most music, a sub woofer is not needed, but in movie use a sub woofer would be advantageous. I have paired these with a Wharfedale Diamond Sub 150 that I have had for many years and they just work well together. I find the 4.1's do disappear into the room and don't sound like sound coming from and between two speakers. The vertical axis drops off quickly, but the horizontal is pretty wide, and if you speakers are placed correctly, they really image beautifully and just disappear. I am still on the fence about buying a centre speaker, as these center image so well. I agree they look better without the grill, but that yellow is a bit ..... distracting. amt tweeters need to be a ribbon, and on the walnut finish they are least distracting, but that colour will always distract I feel.

For these who’ve heard the evo 4.1 and 4.2’s( Andrew if you’re reading this please advise lol) are the 4.2’ better then the 4.1 and is it worth getting them over the 4.1?
@lanx0003
@lanx0003 3 жыл бұрын
I am not a reviewer but I could tell you it is well worth $300 to upgrade since evo 4.2 goes deeper and is a 3-way design so you could get richer midrange. Evo 4.2 received much more rave just about everything over Evo 4.1. For me, it is a no-braner deal.

Hi Andrew, good review. Regarding AMT tweeters, they are one of the best I have heard, of course not all of them are perfect, but if they are properly implemented and coupled with correct mid drivers, cabinet and X-overs, then you will be treated with beautiful sound and presentation. 🙂

Had these for some time now. Today i got the chance to test them up against sonus faber lumina 2. Lumina 2 also sounds great, but lacks the fullness of the evo. Bass is no contest. Both volume and slam. I Also think the highs are a little more dry in a strange way. They Sound good, dont Get me wrong, but no match for the evos here at my place. Keep getting more and more impressed by these cheap britts..

I don't know how you came up with shrill fatiguing sibilance machines for AMT tweeters. At least as far as my AMTs go they couldn't be clearer, cleaner, more detailed, non fatiguing with a complete lack of sibilance. Cymbals are brilliant, the crash and decay is just right. Vocals are clear with a complete lack of sibilance. Instruments sound like they should, imaging and sound stage are fantastic.

AMTs to me have always been sort of unnatural sounding. I remember the first time I ever heard one, any kind of sound emanating from it didn't it all sound right, I don't know how to describe it other than it sounded off. But the last few years I've read up on AMT tweeters and the way that they produce the sound and it kind of makes sense. Our ears recognize sounds as pressure differences in the surrounding air and a conventional tweeter works by manipulating those pressure differences on our eardrums, in a very natural way. And AMT tweeter on the other hand doesn't produce sound that way, they work in a bellows fashion by squeezing air in and out of the folds of the fabric of the tweeter, similar to the way and accordion works, sort of. I don't know you give me an old fashioned Tweeter and I'm in heaven. And please don't take this as a criticism of the technology or the companies utilizing it, I just found that it's not for me. Luckily there are plenty of standard conventional options on the market

I picked up a pair of the 4.2's a month ago, and just love them. The AMT tweeter is fantastic for the type of music I enjoy, (Jazz, acoustic, vocals). The 4.1s were actually used for my sound audition at Crutchfield. I was blown away immediately. Definitely a burn-in period on the speakers, as initially they sounded horrible.

My assumption for why the yellow color on an AMT is the material being used for the film. Certain films come from the factory yellow. I know for planar magnetics, there are different films used with different properties such as one can handle more power. I don’t mind the look of SOME AMTs, but a lot just don’t work with the speaker they’re in. A nice faceplate makes a huge difference.
@peterlarkin762

A lot diaphragms in modern cone drivers are yellow. So it's a bit a factory thing and a bit to make em look like a scifi photon flux engine. The little glass cylinders in the amt are also yellow tinted. Also, darker paint/dye would add a tinyyy bit of weight. I got 4.3's in black, always loved the yellow on black color scheme:) they look less fussy than the wood finish.

I just love your speaker lingo when describing the sound……. “….Sonic contrast” “…..articulate and dynamic with a subtle high frequency roll-off”….. no idea what these mean but love them anyway 😎
@andrewrobinsonreviews
@andrewrobinsonreviews 3 жыл бұрын
Sonic contrast just means that the speaker isn't too skewed to one side, or that the speaker has the top end to balance and/or compliment the lower octaves as well. High frequency roll-off refers to a lot of speakers, in an effort to be more kind or pleasing to poor recordings and/or your ears, that cut or tame the highest most frequencies to avoid ear/brain fatigue when listening.

It's a great speaker in a sea of great speakers. Speakers are so good these days it now comes down to the recording. I'm a mainly a rock band kind of person leaning towards heavy metal. SO many speakers sound amazing with my different systems with a sub and some tonal adjustments. It literally takes a real time side by side comparison for me to say I really like one over the other. Truth be told I like them all and ups buy what I can afford.

The "yellowy-brown" tweeter isn't any good with any kind of wood finish, I'll give you that - but it looks flippin' great contrasted with a black, or especially with a white build. That veneer may not be for your room per se, but I think it looks mad stylin'. :)

I have the Kanto Tuk in my office with the Kanto Sub8 and, turning the treble down slightly, I really enjoy the setup. They are so clear and, while maybe less forgiving than other types of tweeters, their positives outweigh the negatives. These also don’t have that yellowish color so I think Kanto have done the best job dressing the AMT’s up.

For me the biggest problem with amt's isn't the amt's themselves, but combining them with dynamic drivers. It's really hard to blend the differing drivers in a natural way. I realize amt's aren't the same as ribbon speakers like maggies, but they are similar and the maggies tend to work out better because the drivers are all the same style. Anyone who has tried integrating a sub to magnepans will tell you how maddening it can be . Since every sub I know of is dynamic and has a hard time keeping up with the speed of the ribbons. All this said, my cousin has a pair of goldenear towers with AMT's and I love them. Then again Sandy Gross is knows for designing fantastic speakers.

You have reviewed the 4.1 and Rotel A11 tribute. Unless my ears are very wrong, together they are a total disaster - strangled and constrained. I now rely on my fixed-up Arcam 8R and 8p (both recapped) with some old Ruark Sabres with drive unit replaces (Peerless D27TG35-06 tweeter, Monacor SPH-165 with home-made crossover (which probably needs a bit more work a the sound is quite bright)). Anyone else put the 4.1s and tribute together? The Rotel though did sound better with the brighter speakers, and Arcams drive the 4.1s better.
