I enjoyed very much your bookshelf tour!! It's a shame that we don't get to see more videos and channels talking about ancient classics... btw, Socrates looks pretty cool in his woollen hat!

Wow! I really love how diversely you read. So much about ancient Greece which is so cool. I like to think that I read a wide range of stuff, but I think you go a bit beyond me, haha! These are my favorite types of bookshelf tours where I've read a lot of the same things or I have a desire to read similar books.

It's amazing to see that you have spontaneously read such a huge amount of all the ancient greek and latin authors I had to study in high school! I am impressed! I did read quite a few myself and never regretted doing so, but picking them out without having studied them first or without knowing that I would study them in the future is not something I would see myself doing. You even have an English-Ancient Greek dictionary! Does that mean you've been studying the grammar as well? I remember liking translating from latin but hating doing it from ancient greek :S

Wow! You've got Harry potter in ancient greek? (there's been a latin harry potter version too if I remember correctly) I'm greek and I haven't thought of reading it in ancient greek, it would remind me so much of school to enjoy it properly I guess... Anyway, lovely collection of books there, I enjoy variety in someone's bookselves and you have some beautiful editions as well - this Folio edition is really stunning!- but then, all Folio books are so very well made in every aspect (even the paper quality is amazing!):)

You have Frog Music! I finished stir-fry and been saying I want to read that since it's her last book. The last days of Socrates is a very nice and enjoyable read (Philosophy student); the state of your edition is the same as my Republic;) I wish I had your classics collection! Since you have Icelandic, you should see if maybe ancient India texts would interest you, or do they already?

I like these shelves! I just thought that you would probably enjoy 'Memoirs of Hadrian' by Marguerite Yourcenar. I haven't read it in a while but it was my favourite book at one point. It's a novel taking the form of the memoirs of the Roman emperor Hadrian, it's beautifully written (in French at least) and I remember it to be quite a page turner as well as being full of interesting thoughts. Above all, the love story in this book is absolutely beautiful, and I'm not a romance reader. I hope you will read this comment and be convinced ;)

I am totally in love with your little bust of Socrates. He looks so cool with his hat and necklaces. You make me really curious about classical literature. I realise how little I know about myths :). The Palace of Curiosities is gorgeous. You have beautiful books in your possession ;). I love how they needed to change the title of the first Harry Potter book in the USA and in France. I still don't understand why... I just wonder: do you study history, philosophy or literature? Or a mixture of the three? :). It is so good to see books we don't see anywhere else - I mean, not everyone has the complete works of Aristotle on one's shelves :).
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 10 жыл бұрын
Haha thanks :D everyone always ponders over him when they first see him. Ah but that just gives you something new to discover, I really want to widen my knowledge beyond the Greek myths too :). I know I'm running out of room to display them though... :S Haha I know, that always gets me, why they changed the US title is completely beyond me as well. I like how its been adapted for so many different languages though. In the Ancient Greek version it opens with 'Dursley and his wife' rather than 'Mr and Mrs Dursley' because there is no equivalent for Mr and Mrs. I'm studying 'Classical Studies' so yeah essentially a mixture of Literature, philosophy and history :) I used to do a lot of archaeology but have moved into literature more and more as my degree went on. I've given up digging for reading :).

Awesome bookshelf! I love how you are in ancient history cos its interesting to see different books than the usual YA. Haha, I love the book that says 'Basic in Aristotle' and it was massive xD I studied Socraties, Plato and Aristotle cos I did Philosophy for a couple of years in sixth form. It was interesting but I have to say it was my least favourite subject :/

@JeansThoughts 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks :D. Haha fair enough, I'm not a big fan of Aristotle myself you just can't really get away from him when you're studying Ancient Greece :(. It's a difficult topic to teach I'd say :).

You forgot the 2-volume Reading Greek on your desk. Your father surely slants his reading to the political. Of all of Balzac's La Comédie Humaine, Les Chouans would probably not even make my top 10 list to be recommended.

Haha I know I realised that after I'd uploaded it. They are from the JACT, they are really good. He likes buying second hand books and I don't think they have a huge selection of French language books in Scottish second hand bookstores, he just knows I'm trying to improve so gets me things originally in french when he comes across them, I also have the 3 Musketeers :).

Wow. You are about as gigantic of a geek as I am! My hat is off to you. HOLY CRAP!!! G.E.M. DE STE CROIX!!!!! One of my all-time favorite books. I've read tons of his work over the years. I was not expecting to see find that tome of your shelf. I've never read Robert Graves' "Mythology" actually, I am sorry to say. I grew up on Edith Hamilton's book but I wish I had known both. If you're interested in ancient literature you really need to go farther back in time and explore the Mesopotamians if you haven't already. "The Descent of Inanna" and "Gilgamesh" are masterpieces. -- If you're going to read Marx you really need to move beyond overrated juvenalia like the "Manifesto." The essays he and Engels wrote as older men are far deeper and more nuanced. I am trying my best to avoid commenting on more of your books because I could be here all day. -- You have a beautiful library.

It's amazing book isn't it, I do study Greek politics etc as well as literature haha, I think everyone was surprised by all of my Greek history books. My parents own all of Marx's works (and Lenin etc.) I just loved that edition of the Communist Manifesto and known a lot of people who have started there and been intrigued to continue on with his economics and philosophy, I wouldn't completely knock it haha. Thank you :D.

Don't suppose you like Ancient Greece do you? 😉 I was going to ask would you say that Aristotle and Plato and Socrates can be read by someone with no philosophical knowledge? I'm really interested in them but I don't know if I will understand them Also have you read any Nietzsche? 😊
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 10 жыл бұрын
Just a tad haha :). Yeah of course. Socrates didn't write anything down so anything we have that was supposedly said by him is usually written by Plato :). I have to be honest though (and I am definitely not speaking for everyone) I don't enjoy reading Aristotle. It is useful and everything but all three works of his I have read I found dry. Plato is a bit more pleasurable in his writing style. I'd really recommend the Symposium to start with! Easy to read and incredibly interesting (also reasonably short). Also, as for understanding them, it is somewhat a matter of interpretation, sometimes they are straight up unclear and scholars have been debating for decades over what they mean on certain topics. For reading though don't worry about that too much, just enjoy them. The writing is clear enough.You'll be able to understand them as well as any I promise :) don't be scared off. If you like though, get an edition with an introduction and notes because that will clarify everything you're unsure about. Gosh I hope that was in someway helpful. :)
