His handwriting gives you a clue, the kind of person he was, I see an educated person, a person that enjoyed reading, liked history and art, because he was an artist himself!

This looks very much like what I have seen referred to as a "Commonplace Journal". I've only been learning about them myself but this has ALL the usual ingredients that are put in one. WOW!!!

Amazing find, I am a real bookworm and was fascinated by what your friend (Mr Baily) had to tell us about books. I hope that it goes to someone who will really appreciate it. Thank you Alexander .

Alex, Just a few tips for you...you used the word font in referring to script. Font only refers to type and printed letters, in script the different kinds of script are referred to as hands or a hand, as in Spencerian, Copperplate, etc. Yes, the some of these same names do also come in type fonts, however those are based on the original script hands. I hope this is helpful info for you and your viewers.

Also, the letter "s" came in two forms: the form that we recognize today, and the "long s" (which also came in two forms), which sometimes (especially in print rather than script) looks like the letter "f" without the horizontal line through the middle. So, the word "also", which you thought was spelled "alfo", had one of the forms of the long "s", rather than the letter "f" in it.

White gloves are also fiber and thus can be drying to older materials. People were taught to sketch back then as his illustrations show.

A museum in Ireland maybe interested, if they were made aware of this journal. Or an English Navy Museum. Looks like James (Jack) Spratt who was a hero who fought at Trafalgar looks like he might be the same as this James Spratt. Looks like he was a son of the creator of the Journal. Wonder if there is any connection to the nursery rhyme.... Jack Spratt could eat no fat.... ? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Spratt_(Royal_Navy_officer)

Also in these covid times. Don't use hand sanitizer as the chemicals in that can affect the paper. Probably not best to lick your fingers when turning pages and wash your hands after touching the book and before eating food. If in doubt, ask a conservator :)

I learned this in grad school. I had always said it incorrectly. It is miss-cell-AH-knee, not miss-cell-A-nee.

Great. The background music is difficult to deal with. That's probably just me though as I am super sound sensitive.

This is such an unusual journal. I may have missed it in the video, but just curious about the provenance of the journal?... had stayed in the journal writer's family all of these years or not? Just curious.

What did Pepys diaries look like I wonder. There were other diarists of that time too, so journals should have been available to purchase as we would buy a diary nowadays. Anybody clarify? XXX

Thank you for this interesting video. I stopped to watch it because I saw Curiosity Inc in the title but I liked and subbed because of the content. But lets get serious now. Please answer the question we all want to know. What would this book be worth? We won't hold you to the price. Just a ballpark figure.
