I'm so bummed for you, Emily. Seems like a rough reading week Kitty tip, though. When I got my kitten an was trying to get her and my older cat introduced and liking each other, I made a toy that was basically a string that I tied other little toys to. I slipped it under the door with one of them on each side, so they could play with their own respective sides and it would pull on the other side, but they couldn't pull it all the way under because the toys wouldn't fit. This helped them see each other as playmates and not mortal enemies. Not sure if that description makes sense, though.

Omg I had the same problem. My first language is gendered, but then I learned French (very unsuccessfully) and then German. And the genders are different between all three and it makes no sense. I live in a German speaking country now, and had some French-speaking friends right when I moved, so I tried to juggle the languages and the genders... I have already given up, I'm just using whatever gender happens to pop in my head and I say it with the confidence of someone who doesn't speak the language 😂 Edit to add: the genders in my first language make the least sense of all of them. You'd think I know them instinctively after speaking it my whole life, but I swear there are words for which 99% of the population just improvises the gender.

Ouarzazat/warzazat is the name of a Moroccan city. It's in Tamazight one of North-Africa's original languages. I've been living in France for the past 7 years, and I can confirm that the French have a rather strong tendency to using North African words (whether in Arabic or any original language) in the weirdest ways more often than you can imagine. It's one of the aftereffects of colonisation 🤷🏻‍♀️ it always throws me off even after years of constant exposure.

Hi Emily! Fun video as always. I had a "cat situation" similar to this once, it's frustrating! But I don't think it's right to say Mama cat hates her kittens. She is afraid of them. That was real fear in the brief clip we saw of her. I was able to help my older girl with lots of safe spaces where my new kitten couldn't go, and time where she knew she could get my attention and the kitten wouldn't interfere. This was hard to enforce, but worth it. She felt insecure in what was once her territory, and she needed routine. Things improved slowly, but we did get there.

That was so interesting about gender of nouns in French. My first language is Russian and we have 3 genders for nouns, but there are general rules that determine it, with some exceptions. Words that end in “a” are feminine, words that end in consonants are masculine and words that end in “е” or “o” are neutral.
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox Жыл бұрын
In French neutral is masculine lol
@barbaraschmitt85
@barbaraschmitt85 Жыл бұрын
German also has 3 genders, some of the words can seem a little funny in this regard, for example Mädchen (girl) is neutral since words ending in -chen are neutral. The little I do remember from learning French in school is that all words ending in -ion are feminine, words ending in -age are masculine so rules actually exist. But yes, you have to remember most of them because you have to know the noun's gender to build a whole sentence since the verb afterwards depends on it. But there are also words were both exists, for example Tour (la Tour Eiffel and le Tour de France; the only way I remembered is that it's the other way around in German 😂)

Hi Emily, I’m sorry you’re stressed about the kitties. I have 6 and all but two of them are different ages. Our youngest cat is a Tuxie and some of the older cats took to beating on him. Standard advice tells you to keep them apart and gradually introduce them into each other’s territory, however, we’ve rescued many cats and don’t find this approach always works. We let them stay combined, made sure no one was drawing blood, explained to them no one was being rehomed so work it out and they have. It took a little bit but as someone else mentioned they found spaces to avoid each other and we’re good. With that said, they (all of them) still hiss at each other and occasionally punch each other but they’re fine a minute later. It’s likely more stressful for you than it is for them. I have no doubt everything will work itself out.

Hi Emily! I have a cat recommendation that may help. I’m in the US, so I don’t know how accessible this would be for you. When I brought a new cat into my home, he had a hard time transitioning and had a lot of fear and aggression. My vet got us “Feliway Optimum” and it helped sooooo much. It plugs into an outlet and emits pheromones to reduce stress in kitties. We used it for about 2 months (that’s all we needed) but you can use it long term. It’s also good for helping with other kitty life changes (new cat, new house, etc).

I've read a bunch of books by B. Werber (he used to be very popular in Europe like 10-15 years ago) and The Ants was one of them. I can't say that I disliked it but my only motivation to finish it and continue the trilogy was the 'uniqueness' of it. That being said I haven't kept on my promise and unhauled the series a few years back. The author is known by writing peculiar books and the one that I really liked is Le Miroir de Cassandre. If you want to give Werber another chance, you should probably try this one.

Hey Emily, I'm Québécoise and a language nerd (as well as having a French husband lol) and I found that the words in French that are gendered differently usually aren't originally French. It's the same with the word "covid", in France they decided it would be feminine and here we use more often the masculine because, in that case, you really just can make up the rules (there aren't many nouns ending in "ide" in French, when you think about it). As for "bafouer", true, no one says that here but I guess we do know what it means. :P I looked it up and it's considered a formal register verb (registre soutenu), which makes sense in literature. Even in English there are many registers depending on the country, social class, dialect (have you ever heard the cockney accent and colorful vocabulary?), etc. It takes some time to adapt but then you learn new words, and that's always a win for me (well if I like the content of the book, of course 👀).

Try the Jackson Galaxy method of introducing cats to each other. (Watch his detailed video.) Step 1 is to place their food bowls on opposite sides of a closed door, so they associate their scents with something positive. And it’s requires some repetition, like about 4-7 days. Step 2 site swapping, for momma cat to refamiliarize kitten smells throughout the home. And for kittens to rub their scent in her area. Step 3, visual contact- for momma to see them but still feel secure in her area. Step 4 slowly let her out with the kittens around and monitor their interactions. Don’t let momma stare down anyone, intercept before she pounces or bats at them. And growling or hissing is normal at first. Also, if you’ve already introduced them and there are issues, then start at step 1 and follow through. This method is like a reset button.
@pennPi
@pennPi Жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, if this doesn’t work you may need to re-home momma. It is their natural instinct to chase away kittens after weening. It’s natures way to prevent inbreeding. She may never adjust to them because they are her kittens.

My Barbie had babies 2 yrs ago, and immediately after she stopped nursing them, she started to hate them so much. Now, 2 yrs later, it is a bit better - usually she ignores them. She still is not a big fan o her sons - when they look at her, usually it earns them a slap. She has her moments, though. Very rarely, she let them lick the top of her head. But usually if they are in the same room as her she just goes outside or to the other room. So yes, it's not great but civil at this point. I don't have any good advice on how to deal with that :/

Hello! French lady here. "Ouarzazate" is the name of an algerian town . This is a VERY strange name for a dog, indeed (funny tho). And yes, some words have a different gender in France and Quebec.

First, for sure there are rules. I don't speak French, I don't know the rules, but for sure there are rules. I can just give an example from German: the English words are usually neutral, das, like Email, das Email, but I did also see the feminine version, die Email. There are always exceptions, but there have to be rules.

Hey Emily - maybe it’s time to have the kittens go in that room and let Mama Pear out with you an aged roam and look out the windows ? She can’t be too happy in there by her self all day 😢she can join you in your library … Does she enjoy playing with any toys? Could you play her some bird /squirrel videos ? Our cat loves to watch those . Good luck 😊

Thank you! At this point the babies are pretty easy since they have a routine but Pear doesn’t seem to be improving which is stressful. The kittens are getting surgery before the end of the month so hopefully that’ll help!

Maybe you need to try to sit with mama and then open the door so she sees the babies. I think some of it is jealousy so if you’re with her it might help. Keep us posted!

werber said on a french radio show that for each book idea he has he writes 2 books at the same time and then chooses which one to publish, so i'm not really surprised his books are a little bit of a mess (also i never knew that canadians had different genders for things it's so interesting)

Hi, I'm French, and yes, we say "une vidéo" et "le/un job" (actually, we say "le travail" and rarely use "job" for "work"); it seems like there are many differences between French Canadian and French from France! As for dogs... no, we don't call our dogs like that 😂 I read Bernard Werber when I was quite young, like middle/high school, and... I hated the last book I read by him as an adult, it was really bad...

I also didn't like Cytonic. It felt very wacky and not in a good way. Undermined characterisation to me and seemed deliberately distracting. If it was combined with the novellas which gave us some familiar territory/characters to ground it, MAYBE I wouldn't have disliked it. Alas. I'm on the fence about reading Defiant. :(

The French say we can't properly speak french in Québec, but that's to be debated. As for vidéo, Le Petit Robert says it's feminine (but I do use it as a masculine word) and job is masculine (but I also use it as a feminine word-also québecoise!😂). We have a hard time imposing "our" way as we're so few. But I know we got courriel accepted when they still use e-mail overseas! 💪 And Warzie? I believe you just convinced me not to read it!

Funny to hear you discuss Canadian French and "European" French lol.. I had no idea that some words had their gender reversed "over the pond" ;-) How would you say "il bafouilla" in Canadian French? I would go as far as saying that in Belgian French you could say "il broubella." Not sure of the spelling though because it's colloquial French.

Regarding the new words being masculine or feminine. I'm Swiss and to me it feels like the words keep the gender of the word they shorte or abbreviate. So vidéo to me feels short of vidéographie and all words in -graphie are feminine. Job is rarely used in swiss french, but we would absolutely say it masculine, because it replaces travail or taf (informal local word) which are both masculine. But those or just some vague intuitions, there may be other explanations.

Je suis française, bafouiller is a word we use, but not that often nowadays… And yes French language is very gendered, it makes me uncomfortable 😅 For genders like video, it is indeed feminine in French, and the Académie française is supposed to give the rules for new words appearing in the dictionary (doesn’t mean that we also use the right gender though in real life 😂)
