HOW DO I READ SO MUCH?! It's honestly simple. I read on the bus (1h a day) and before bed (1h). More during the weekends! Most people have the time to read just as much if not more... I just try and limit how much time I spend on Facebook, Instagram, etc!

I never understood the whole Snape thing! He was excused from being emotionally abusive and just plain horrible all because he loved someone for a long time? Harry lost his parents, Neville lost his parents, The Weasleys lost one of their own, the list goes on and yet they all chose to still be nice human beings! I just don't understand why everyone thinks he's a hero despite being a bully to young children. Loved the video, though :)

A overall bad man did one big good thing... doesn't make him a perfect person! I think people just really want to find someone that will love them "always" and are forgetting the rest :P

Iz Samuel I agree, he was basically an ass the whole time, but if you think about it, he had to be. He couldn't be kind and buddy buddy with Harry or he wouldn't have been able to fool Voldermort into thinking he was on his side. He had to be the way he was.

Yeah, that argument would have some sense if he knew Voldemort was really alive and looking to come back by book one, but he didn't. I don't hate him, but all the things he did to Harry, Neville, Hermione, etc. were for just bitterness, not in serve for a grand scheme.
@diamondsofsix
@diamondsofsix 7 жыл бұрын
Well, that was the purpose of his character. Rowling created him as a red herring in book one and kept him as such because she liked the premise. You're supposed to hate him so that the "reveal" of his sacrifice would have more impact. He is an ass because Rowling wanted him to be, a cheap trick basically. And imo one of the few places in the book where Rowling's concistency and storytelling lacked. People who love Snape usually tend to look at the character himself, his story, his messed up choices, his loyalty and his bravery.

Margaret Atwood is my favorite author. I have never been disappointed by a single one of her novels or short story collections. The Handmaid's Tale is my favorite, but if you want to read another of hers, I can't recommend The Blind Assassin highly enough. It was absolutely beautiful.

Yes! That's exactly how I felt about Snape the first time I re-read the books as an "adult" - even though in my case you could argue about the re-reading factor too since I read them in italian the first time and in english from the second on. I mean I understand the whole always thing and everything surrounding it, but he still took his adolescence-dated frustrations out on a boy that had nothing to do with it.

Not to repeat everyone else, but yeah I would recommend pushing on to book 2 of the dark tower series. If you still don't like it, then it's not for you. Book 2 is when King really finds his voice and tone. Also, He revised a lot of book 1. That's unfortunate that the graphic novel didn't do A Tale of Two Cities justice. I think it's by far Dickens' best story.

To be honest, my track record with Stephen King has been pretty great so far. I've read Carrie and Cujo, two of his oldest novels, and I absolutely loved both of them. I say don't give up on him. Cujo was one of my top 5 reads of last year, it was so thrilling. Highly recommend.

The gunslinger should be confusing because the other books are way better. It doesn't stand alone and I think you can't judge the series based on it because it's an introduction to the world Stephen King created. I urge you to try the second book. If you don't like it then it's not worth it to read more. I, unlike many people, loved the gunslinger with all it faults because of how atmospheric and intense it was. Just know that a lot of his other books play big part in his series. Some characters and monsters jump in the gunslinger universe.

I've read Do Androids Dream and I was expecting more, although the part with the spider was disturbing so at least that felt real. It's not often that the main character is so unlikable. As for recommendations, Margaret Atwoods "Oryx and Crake" is my fave from her so far (I started collecting her books after reading this in university). Thomas Kings "Green Grass, Running Water" is a really cool and funny. They're both Canadian authors too.

I read The Picture of Dorian Gray this month as well! Overall I loved the book, however I have to agree there was a section in the middle of the book that I felt was a bit slow. I read a different Margaret Atwood book, Oryx and Crake, and I thought it was a really good dystopian, and I would recommend it. Yeah, as an education major it kinda bugs me how often the fandom over looks just how mean of a teacher Snape was to his students. In any event, have a happy February!

Salut Emily! I can't believe you are able to read so many books in a month with work and school...plus your book budget must be huge unless you buy them used (as I often do). Kudos on reading those classics :) I haven't re-read harry potter in a long while, but book 6 is my favourite too..or was. I'm not sure any more. I have a few in French (I pick them up when I see them at yard sales, etc.) but I find the changes so weird they kind of freak me out (Hogwarts vs Poulard). Plus I feel like novels with a Parisian vocabulary hard to follow as an Acadian. Sorry for the belated comment :)

A Tale of Two Cities is one of my favorite classics. But seeing the version you have by checking it on Goodreads, I think it did not gave it justice. The story if quite long and deep and I'm afraid shortening it will make anyone like it (specially making it a graphic novel, which in my opinion the conversations makes the story - it just will never work). The unabridged Charles Dickens version I hope you could check. :)

Yes, yes, yes, yes about Snape! I get so irritated when people forget how awful he was. I'm sorry, the fact that he was in love with Harry's mother doesn't justify all the bad things he did. Sure, he did some good things and he was kind of misunderstood. But a shit ton of people (sorry, I'm really passionated about this hahaha) in the Harry Potter series experienced awful things but didn't go around making everyone else completely miserable. Snape was both bad and good. In that sense he was a really well-crafted character and I love Rowling for empathizing that all people have a little darkness inside them.
