TOTALLY agree with you about the pointless sexual assault scenes. Sex scenes in general are cringe imo, but sexual assault just disturbs me. One exception I’ve found though is My Dark Vanessa. It’s written by a woman and I felt it handled the topic very realistically in a respectful way. Highly recommend. Very powerful story.

I don't think you're heartless for not liking wwII historical fiction, I personally hate them. I feel like the authors that write historical novels set in that time are not trying to raise awareness, at this point I think they're just kind of using people's suffering in order to get awards, because books (and movies ) that focus around that theme always get a lot of praise. And those books, that kind of constant exposure to suffering, I think it kinda numbs our empathy and majes us used to it. I think it's really important to be educated about history and about that period in particular, but for that there are a lot of memoirs and non fiction from and about survivors and witnesses. Don't get me wrong, fiction is a great way to get people to empathize and I think that's important too, but I just think that authors try to use that suffering and trauma for their own purposes and I hate it. I think it's kind of manipulative so I just don't care for fiction about wwII anymore.

In Greek literature,a lot of Greek author focus on the catastrophe of Smyrna and minor Asia,and as a grandchild of survivors I can say it makes me sick to see them.some are historical,which I understand,but most are for sensationalism.

I felt it so much when you held up the folio editions of those French classics! Those editions (and the fact that I've come to the conclusion that I don't trust any of the German or English translations of Les Misérables) are the reason I'm working on my French again. Tbh, I think what does it for me is that the design is pretty simple and uniform, and once you have a couple of them right next to each other, it's just so incredibly satisfying. xD

A good historical fiction is The Homegoing by Yaa Gyaasi. It’s not about the world war 😉 It’s a family saga about generations of black people, starting off with two sisters in Ghana - one stayed in Ghana and one was sold into slavery. The book follows their families generations on and it’s amazing. This book is an amazing read, especially in the current circumstances, and I think you’ll enjoy! I also recommend Khaled Hosseini, a very good historical fiction author (A Thousand Splendid Suns is great).

about wheel of time: if you're not a huge fan of classic fantasy you might not enjoy the first three books, especially eye of the world. in my opinion they're kind of formulaic and not really the best representatives of what wheel of time becomes. HOWEVER, (and i know it's kind of a meme to say shit like this nowadays), books 4-6 and 11-14 are indeed amazing, some of the best i've ever read, and they absolutely are worth the hype. i started reading them because i'd heard about the show and it was one of the best decision i ever made.

I've become way more critical of everything I read in just the last few years. I think it also is because I've started noticing things like sexism, homophobia, racism, fatphobia, ableism etc. a LOT more, and I just CANNOT ignore it while reading. I try to overlook it when the book is very old, but in newer books it just makes me furious :')

Actually I think Red Rising was the first and only book I read (at least I can't recall any other right now) that had the "female love interest dies to motivate the main character" trope, so I didn't really mind it at all. Regarding your statement on love triangles: YES, YES, a thousand times yes! I hate it even more when the two love interests are siblings/(best) friends and their relationship suffers or breaks because they love the same person. I get that people like love stories (althought I don't, but yeah, I know that people like them, so I get why they are often so prominent in books), but platonic love is also important and I love to read about great friendships and family dynamics, but it often seems that as soon as the main character falls in love, no other relationship counts anymore. And yes, male and female can be friends without falling in love; the word friendzone alone makes me go crazy sometimes....

Hey Emily :) I have a question about sexual assault scenes. What makes a scene like that pointless to you? I'm genuienly curious. Because I feel like in real life, there's no reason or point to a thing like that happening, it just happens because people are monsters. So sometimes in a book it just happens for no reason because that's how it is in real life? I do agree that male authors kinda get off on it, I get that feeling as well.
@BookswithEmilyFox

In my opinion it's pointless 99% of the time. Like others mentioned, unless it's about the character's POV (like My Dark Vanessa) but overall... it's definitely overused and almost lazy when male authors use it to show that a certain character is "bad".

I can NOT stand WWII historical fiction. It's great because it brings awareness to the awful events that happened but I always try to find outside of Europe in WWII. I recommend Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, it's so beautiful. Anything by Janie Chang (one of my fave authors). I'm planning on reading the Kite Runner (not sure if it's historical fiction but kinda seems like it)

Historical fiction is a lot more than WWII :D it's one of my two favourite genres, but I rarely read WWII books. I prefer older periods of history, like medieval, renaissance, Mediterranean civilizations, south American civilizations, the Scandinavian kingdoms in the 1600s... WWII books pretty much always end up being generalist books, with some exceptions maybe.

Well now I feel bad about immediately donating my copy of Midnight Library to Goodwill, I squandered it. Wasn't a fan of it. I was super excited for it but felt a huge disconnect and a good amount of annoyance with it. It is probably because my personal experience with chronic depression and suicide has been completely different from that described in the book. I know a lot of people praised it because they felt it was dead on in depicting their experience with mental illness but I think if you have gone through depression and suicide attempts, then read a book where that experience is not relatable to your own then you are left with a greater divide and inability to connect. People experience mental illness differently so I am sure many people did connect with it because of their own experiences, I just didn't. You know, there are not a lot of tropes in books that anger or upset me. I think it is because I don't encounter a ton of them. Or when I do, I have a degree of detachment from it. So I have heard you talk about the sexual assault trope a lot and a big part of my focus when I was in graduate school is studying things like genocidal rape, rape used as a tool of demoralizing a culture and soiling it through the sexual assault of a particular race. I read about rape on a weekly basis for 3 years. That and war, genocide, inequality, oppression, exploitation, etc. I can be hyper aware of these topics, but I have a rather large degree of detachment from them as well. Like in horror when a woman is killed right after sex based on the slut trope, I don't get offended, I just think about the arguments people have made that they shouldn't have someone being killed violently for their sexuality and then about the suggestion that movie makers and authors wait longer than 5 seconds to kill someone after they have had sex to remove the fetish of violent sex. I read Carl Schmitt and was more offended by his lack luster writing style that made fascism week boring than I was at his Nazi theories. All that being said, as a victim of rape myself, I would greatly appreciate reading sexual assault in books that is meaningful. More than just a footnote and more about the impact. I obviously don't have issues with the topic being discussed but it would be nice if it was discussed in a useful damn way. Both my sister and I were raped as children and we sure as hell didn't rise from the ashes. I was too young to even know what happened to me, I was 17 and thinking back on it like "Oh shit, I was raped when I was 4...how did it take me this long to figure that out." I never even told anyone because all the adults say if someone touches you 'down there' it is bad and I thought I would get in trouble, especially given the extent of the 'touching'. My sister was raped by a close family member at 12 and then told to apologize for embarrassing him or she would not be allowed back at the house, the house she was staying at after being kicked out of our house by my step-father. The woman was fucked up over that for the remainder of her childhood and well into her adult life. Still impacts her. So yeah, should fight to make it standard that if you talk about sexual assault in your books then you should deal with the topic in a real way. Sexual abuse doesn't make you a stronger person. It makes you a person that has to compensate for that trauma throughout your entire life.

The UK skyward books are much prettier ! (And all the white sanderson books too ) I agree with u for last one so much ! I hate the trope of the the death or rape of the girl to advance the story of the main character ... it’s got to a point that I want to throw the book on my wall. The author that people always tell me I should read but I feel I won’t like would be either Alain Damasio or Jean Phillips Jaworski (french authors )

It's funny because the french paperback are mass market paperback for you. Do you have the difference between paperback and mass market in canadian publishing houses? (the english ones or the Québécoises?) Because in the French and French speaking Belgian book market, you have kinda like the Paperback for a new books, which acts a bit like the hardcover in the US/UK (because we almost never have harcover books, at least in literature, we do hardcover for comics or coffee table books/artbooks) and then what you call the mass market paperback we have as the "paperback" so like a year later. But the (mass market) paperback is so prevalent that it became the standard format. It's not thought out as the mass market or event paperback but as The Book, the norm. I find the difference pretty interesting. Altought yes, the French mm paperback tend to be floppier with a paper that's not as rigid as in the us/uk mm paperback. Same goes for the covers and the spine. Well... I rambled XD I hope I make sense.

I started laughing so hard when you mentioned Les Chevaliers d'Emeraulde. I recently read the first two books because I thought a YA Fantasy would be a great way to practice reading in French. If you read them as a kid and can't really remember the story, I am here to tell you they are so much worse than you probably remember. I had to stop, which is such a bummer because I was really happy to be reading a fantasy series by a Canadian author, and the reading level is perfect for my skill level right now. So much sexually bizarre stuff, like the protagonist loses his virginity to a ghost? And then later has sex with a much younger person who was his squire, who he basically raised for almost a decade? It's so gross. I could go on about how problematic those books are, it's awful.

Haha, when you said a Québécois series I immediately knew it would be Les Chevaliers d'Émeraude. I *just* read Red Rising yesterday and was so wildly frustrated after that character death. I loved the book but, like. How tired and boring. On top of the trope of just female characters dying/being traumatized to advance the journey of a male character, it was also very much a ✨too pure and good for this world✨ moment.

After reading the whole series, there are definitely some well written female characters later in the series but the author never gives up on using female pain as a plot point to further Darrow's character development. That's why I don't understand why so many people love that series
