One of my favorite things about Doctor Who is that one moment we have adorable talking babies, the next we get a killer villain performance by Jinkx Monsoon, and then we take a sharp turn to dive into heavy topics like war profiteering. The range and variety of storytelling is incredible ❤

Steven Moffat was my favorite Doctor Who showrunner and this episode was a reminder why. He even managed to insert a touch of whimsy in this super intense episode! You'll get Moffat soon enough when you get back to the older episodes. He takes over at the start of season 5 and stays through the end of season 10. Clergy being the military is something you'll see during Moffat's era. I don't know if he introduced the idea or not - it could have come from Classic Who, I haven't seen enough of Classic Who to know. But he uses the concept at various points through his run. Makes sense to me. The Doctor is right - they have been soldiers and warriors throughout human history. Holy wars are still being waged in some parts of the world.

The Anglican Marines AFAIK were not in Classic WHO, they first appear in the 2 parter near the start of Series 5, THAT one. Which is 51st century, and so is their other appearances, and given the Calendar age they gave for Ruby, it also adds up to 51st century, so he has his notes and checks them while writing. Only other WHO stuff in or around that time period I think is Magnus Greel from the Talons of Weng-Chiang in Classic WHO.

He said he wanted to evoke the same emotions he experienced watching it. We don't know she'll be playing the same character. I think this is one of those situations like with Freema where they liked the actor so they brought them back later as a different character to be main cast. Nobody knows for sure what part she'll play in Serial 2, but I think RTD had made a vague comment to suggest it won't be as Mundy. But no one knows but him and his crew, so not a spoiler to have wild speculation.

P.S.: From AI (ChatGPT4): "The quote 'What survives of us is love' is often attributed to Philip Larkin, a prominent British poet. It comes from his poem 'An Arundel Tomb,' which was published in his 1964 collection 'The Whitsun Weddings.' The poem reflects on a medieval tomb and the effigies of a couple lying side by side, their hands joined. The closing lines of the poem capture a sense of enduring love that transcends time: 'Our almost-instinct almost true: What will survive of us is love.' "These lines suggest that, despite the passage of time and the inevitability of death, love is the enduring legacy of human existence."

It's weird that every one of Ncuti's episodes have featured the same actress, Susan Twist, playing different characters. This week, she was the recorded message of the ambulance, last week she was the lady working at the BBC canteen, before that she was one of the former crew of the Space Babies station. She was in the Christmas episode, too. Probably just coincidence.

Great episode! This is Moffatt doing what he does best. Little girl was the only negative, but like you said/implied - maybe that's intentional cause she represents ignorant reality-denying childish people who don't learn even when it is right in their face. I hadn't thought of that before. I probably need to watch the Commentary from the writer on the Blu-Ray or something if it ever gets released like that. Sorry I'm late to the party. Crazy stuff going on IRL. Ambulance came to my parents house last night, but thankfully my 75 yo step-mom was not deemed unworthy to save by the Algorithm! I know the joke the Brits sometimes tell about America is the EMT has to check your wallet before your pulse, but in reality they're great competent capable people and I'm glad my parents have Medicare. If only every citizen had such coverage. I wish we did have an NHS like they do across the pond. If I didn't have a good job I wouldn't be covered. I lived a good portion of my life w/out any coverage. Capitalism for you, yet again. The messaging of this story was on point! And that line about Faith meaning you can switch off your thinking! Chef's Kiss! I punched the sky on my couch, thank you Doctor for saying so. Nothing wrong with faith but it is a tool not a crutch and too many people walk around like they've no legs to stand on at all.

Doctor Who is back! Thank God for Steven Moffat! Best episode since RTD came back as show runner. It’s been announced that Moffat is writing this year’s Christmas special, which is surprising because in the past it’s always been the show runner in NuWho that writes the Christmas episode, so I can only think that Moffat has come up with such a great idea/story that RTD was happy to step aside because he couldn’t top it with any of his own ideas. Here’s hoping.

This was a great one. Almost just one location, and a tough situation on the boil. In the past, Moffat has compared miltarism and organised religion (and capitalism) as similar forms of fanatacism, but throwing in the alhorithmic element in was a great wrinkle. Though yeah, the little girl (as a character, no hate on the child actor) was pretty annoying. Such an unbelivable lack of situational awareness.

So, Susan Twist. This actress (and it is her real name, she's been a working actress for some years) has been in 5 episodes recently. 1. The special Wild Blue Yonder, as a woman in the 18th century. Not saying more, as Syntell and Rekkai haven't watched that yet. 2. In The Church on Ruby Road, as a woman at Ruby's gig who requests that she play Gaudete, a very old Christmas Carol. 3. A brief cameo in Space Babies as a recorded message from one of the crew who abandoned ship. 4. A tea lady in The Devil's Chord, who says she's like Margaret Lockwood in The Wicked Lady - "statuesque". 5. And now in Boom she's the lady on the ambulance droids. Also in The Devil's Chord we had the doctor mentioning his granddaughter Susan, and notably 'There's always a Twist at the end". She's confirmed in next week's cast too. I have no idea where this is going, tbh, lots of clues and no proper link between them yet. So, any (unspoilery) ideas, people?

I thought it was pretty clear that Splice knew the hologram wasn't her real dad, she straight up called it a hologram too. There's no reason to assume that a normal outside kid who got special permission to be here (which means they have no procedure for explaining the war or the caskets to children) would know that the hologram means her dad is dead. (They emphasize this before we even hit the intro, and when she meets Ruby and Doc, the first people who might actually tell Splice what's going on, they completely refuse.) Her dad was simply missing, and the hologram was the only lead to his whereabouts that she could find. That's also why she only panics once the Ambulance takes the AI away. I don't get how you could think that she was too stupid to tell or was in shock, that's ironically enough a bad faith reading of the episode

I was glad to see Moffat coming back to guest writing since he took a break during the awful era after his run. Cant really say much due to spoilers of his writing style but yea typical Moffat stuff here though this episode started off crazy I think I would have to rate it as one of his weakest. Though I love the doctor hating on blind faith as someone who was raised christian and finally broke free of that brain washing in highschool it hurts sometimes seeing people who are so steadfast in their beliefs. the annoying child ruined it for me though she was important to the typical doctor who weak conclusion... also the "everywhere is a beach eventually" sure except most planets dont even have oceans but i guess every planet with life should have some kinda water but still. and the teasing next of kin when we only got like 8 episodes in a season when we used to have 13. also the dumb song in the last episode and waiting for the "twist at the end" which is... the twist is NEXT TIME ON DOCTOR WHO! except most smart people dont wanna watch the next time cause spoilers.
