Applying multiple coats of ultra thin Tamiya acrylics to my models has been a real game changer for my airbrushing and taken it to another level. Thank you Boomer, for sharing this important technique in this and previous videos.

I have always loved a good "oil" wash. However, in the last decade or so I have moved away from them because I can achieve similar results with water based acrylics. Acrylics have a learning curve and work out great if you stay with them. Of course, oils are more forgiving and have that transparent quality which can't be beat.

“More confidence means more IPA and less paint.” Never a truer word written 😄 I freaked out the first time that I applied heavily diluted Tamiya and went back to full strength. You explain the properties of the IPA diluted paint so well Boomer 👏

Hi.. I am a recent visitor to your blog, and I must say that you are one of the best artisans and artists in this game, but also an excellent teacher. I stumbled across a little defense that you put up in October 2021 about how it was OK to put up an industry that is no longer operational. I feel that people can put up Lionel trainsets, dioramas, heavy-operation railroads or whatever they are pleased with, without having to defend their purpose of doing so. People with tunnel vision are just burrs under the saddle. You are offering techniques and ideas that are exceptionally well formed, and folks can take from your techniques what they want. "Make mistakes and keep on going" is a worthy motto for any creative outlet. To you I say, that you are an absolutely outstanding teacher.

Thank you for the gracious compliment Tom. It's nice when people appreciate the teaching or educational element to the channel. I would say most of the channel subscribers are very appreciative like yourself. It makes the effort worth while to share my journey - opinions, faults and successes, and all. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Really like how the lighter colors reactivate the umber base! For the Windsor&Newton, that shine comes very close indeed to the creosote look. Even when such creosoted beams have been installed for years, they absolutely shine their carbon sheen. Whether through exposure through rain, sunlight or heat. It’s always a combination of those very greys and deep blacks close to umber. Very cool 😎 railings Boomer!

I love the journey encompassed in this hobby. Endless subjects to model. My goal is to help people increase their skill level and enjoyment in this fantastic hobby called model railroading - or in my case "The Art of The Diorama" within the scope of the former. The channel is a little different than the mainstream "entertainment" style people are used to seeing. I also feel fortunate to have good health at my age so I can share my passion with the online community. Glad to hear you are gleaning something beneficial from the content. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Boomer, you mentioned that you can mix Tamiya paints with water, but in my experience with Tamiya, you’re sort of right! I’ve found that when mixing it with water, you can literally watch the pigment drop out of suspension if you don’t keep it mixed while you working. To that point I never use water, but will use alcohol, lacquer thinner (Tamiya Lacquer Thinner with Retarder) or acetone (Tamiya Brush Cleaner).
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 2 жыл бұрын
I use water sometimes when applying Tamiya to terrain with a standard traditional brush ( as a sloppy wash). This way, any anomalies fit right into the ground effect. I don't mix it with water when I spray Acrylic Tamiya unless I want certain weathered effects. ;-)

At 18:03 you say use thin paint. So how would you paint an Southern Pacific locomotive with thin Paint. I would love to see that.
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 2 жыл бұрын
Like I said in layers - not all at once. I painted some of my locomotives that way and I think they look great. The paint is thin and the detail in the casting is not lost to fat paint.

Hi Boomer (and Dusty) A paint mixing clarification please! When you say 10% pigment and 90% IPA, I understand the 90% IPA but is the pigment 10% straight out of the store bought bottle (not cut with IPA like three or four times as you’ve described in other videos) or is it “open the new bottle, cut it into 3 or 4 bottles THEN use that mixture as the 10% pigment? Hope that makes sense - it’s late

I usually reefer to a new (topped up) bottle. After awhile it is all about feel and test on paper for me. But then, it also depends on temperature in the room, compressor pressure, and color as well. I like to thin Tamiya paint like ink (super thin). It shoots through the airbrush much better. The whole point of the airbrush is coverage with thin coats. Furthermore, not all color pigment is the same. Tamiya and IPA is very forgiving though, even when you over thin it. Besides, it is always a good idea to build up the layers and not cover with one heavy coat.😁

I've never been good at painting, it's really my weak point. Airbrushes scare me, they're always a clogging mess and I never felt like my paints were working right. I have a nice collection of vallejo model air and try to thin them well with a acrylic thinner, but I see you use tamiya paint thinned with iso. Could I simply thin my vallejo collection with iso and get similar results?
@boomerdiorama
@boomerdiorama 2 жыл бұрын
No. Use the Vallejo thinner or water. If you have a clogged airbrush your paint is too thick. Thin it down lots and build up the layers. Thin more than you logically would. Keep testing on paper until it sprays smooth.
