Boost Fin Stand Up Paddle-board capacity test

Testing my boost fin in an aquarium on the Stand up Paddle-board (SUP) "Wind" setting, it did two 15 minute runs, plus an 8 minute run before it went into a shutdown mode that required 30 minutes of waiting and then plugging in before it would reset. I suspect this was an over-heat shutdown that then required power applied to wake up the BMS (as I've had over-heat shutdowns with more than 50% of the battery remaining), but it could have been just a low battery shutdown as the battery was down to 12% when I reset it.

Thanks Jay for this accurate test. You talk about a sailboat, I presume it’s a small one … not only because of your name, I suggest you to have a look at the JAYKAY E-Fin, which is similar to the Boost but stop by itself when out of the water, is 400W, and has 2 different modes of function if you paddle. You can see it on KZbin test of SUP TV, JayKay E-Fin and the funny is they use the aquarium too (without stones) ;)

Looks like a pocket size dc jack with a battery in a waterproof pocket or something is needed for when your out on the water and you need to reset it. i can imagine the inconvenience if out on a SUP and it happens for example. as the magic screwdriver doesnt reset on its own. 🤔 not that anyone would be wanting additional things to carry. certainly having seen this issue if I do go ahead and buy one would have this issue in the back of mind. obviously yes run less frequent but if upwind etc would want to keep up the momentum.

Yes, their execution / ramp up speed / shipping rate leaves a lot to be desired. I expect they have over-committed, and am lucky to be one of the original Kickstarter backers early in the queue.

I have tested it for speed pushing a 14' sailboat hull (Sunfish), so that's not exactly a fair measurement compared to a surfboard, but you can find that video by searching "boost" on my channel if you want to see it.
