RAM 1500 Gas Tank REMOVAL - DIY - 2009-2018

In this video we show how we remove the fuel tank or gas tank from a 2014 RAM 1500 pickup truck with a 32 gal gas tank. This should be the same for all RAM 1500 pickup trucks from 2009 to 2018 with a 32 gallon fuel tank. The procedure is fairly simple but some hidden hoses and connections need to be removed first in order to not break anything!

UPDATE: I watched this video and gave me the confidence of doing it myself and not the dealership. My RAM was not reading the gas level at certain points, so I decided to change the fuel pump in full. I did break a few tabs, but after 6 hours , got it done! Wanna give a shout out to this channel because i was actually motivated to do a bunch of stuff to my 2014 Ram 1500 Sport.

Great video. Couple of tips. You can reach all fittings without dropping the tank first. It's easier to pop the fuel line that connects to the fuel pump module along the frame rail and pop the line loose of the clips. Especially if you're unhooking everything before dropping. Great video!!

Thank you for the video. 4.5 hours later, all fixed, but it would have been longer making sure all the connections were undone. The inner fender was one of the hardest parts. I did undo the pump connections by reaching through the fender wall, as it did not look to have enough length to lower the tank and do it from the top. Saved hundreds and installed a Delco part. Great Video, taking off the driver side rear wheel and well cover was huge . Allows sight into otherwise compromised areas and allows perfect access to the fuel tube, vent tube and electrical connector . The use of the straps is also a great idea , we used 3 straps and a jack . Worked wonderfully. Had it out and back in 2hrs

I just did mine a 2011 dodge ram 1500 sport with crew cab 5.7 L . This video was the one to follow , I removed the box and lifted it and move it back , then lowered the gas tank enough to change the fuel pump then reversed the order, i found it eazier to unhook lines and get get at the fuel pump when i removed the box . The outdoorsmen was the first video i follwed , but the gas tank is set up diffrent u cant remove the fuel pump cause the cab is in the way. Great vid! I keep having issue with the evap module(connects to evap canister) I get a code its bad and have replaced 3 times also with that the engine is bouncing a little while accelarating at certain speeds and my rpms bounce just a little (100rpms at most up-down-up down-up-down while accelating)... would this indicate a bad fuel pump or mroe likey spark plugs? i only get codes for evap module which i tested and seems fine with no leaks. I am a certified diesel mechanic and my pride wont let me bring this to a dealer . apprecate the help

I just finished replacing my pump following this pretty much exactly. The white plastic top had cracked into about a dozen little pieces (none fell in, thankfully) so without a sealed system I was getting warnings from check gas cap to big & small leaks to misfires. If I tried to fill it up at the pump, gas would come right out the cracks all over the station. Talk about embarrassing. The most difficult steps for me was trying to get the fuel and EVAP lines that had the U-shape clips off and on, especially when I couldn't always see what I was doing. but overall it went smoothly. Now on to my exhaust leak. Ugh.

Dumb question! If I have a 4-post lift, would there be enough room between the two lift's drive rails to still drop the tank? Was thinking the lift would be easier for me than jack stands and floor jack. Also, if I have the smaller tank (22 gallon I think), is it just shorter in length, or does it vary in other ways?

Just did mine, after watching someone DIY dropping the tank out the bottom, it's just as easy to loosen the bed and lift the bed, removing the pump out the top. 😁👍

Crew Cab short box the fuel pump is positioned under the rear seats. You still have to drop the tank half way to get the pump out and back in even with the bed off. (2009 and up with larger fuel tank.)

Great video. My 2012 3500 just started spraying fuel from the top of the tank upwards towards the left side of the truck. Appears to be coming from where the pump sits, . Before I pull the tank, I hope to actually see where the fuel is coming from. Any ideas? Which one of the fuel lines would be pressurized?

Update: about 3 hours to get the tank out. The driveline was definitely in the way and once it was dropped , I could wedge my way between the exhaust to see the top of the fuel tank. The hole is in the feed line from the pump (larger line). I'm considering just cutting out the part with the hole and using regular fuel line as a splice. I can't see why this wouldn't work. Replacing the whole line would be a pain.

So on a 15 crew cab big horn I would not recommend trying to remove the bed, as once you do you still can't access the fuel pump...I think it was easier to remove the tank than wrestling with the giant bolts that hold down the bed anyway.

TLDR: If you have a crew cab use this video. DO NOT mess with the bed. WTF Ram? Thanks for the video. I wish I had went with this instead of some of the “just pull the bed” videos. Pull the bed MIGHT work with single or quad cab but NOT crew cab. I started down that road, but much to my horror when I lifted the bed only to find the fuel pump assembly still tucked 2/3 or more under the cab with maybe 3” between it and the cab! If you have a crew cab truck with 26 gal tank just do it the way this vid shows, and skip pulling the bed. I ended up doing a hybrid method of the 2 and it was awful. I was going to elaborate a bit on what I did, but as it was a bit sketchy especially as I typed it out I’ll just leave it at if you have the crew cab don’t mess with the bed just drop the tank. Fuel pump assembly was replaced (in May 2022) as a result of P0463 code and intermittently working gas gauge on a 2017 1500 Sport 5.7L with 38000 miles and 7 months out of power train warranty. The gauge sending unit on mine had a scored line similar to the one in this video that looks even worse zoomed in on the picture I took of it. There is no doubt in my mind I changed the right part to address the issue. This issue seems so common and premature it baffles my mind why it hasn’t been addressed yet. Oh well, the pump assembly I put back in its place did look noticeably different. Maybe now in mid 2022 they’ve got it right.

Great video you should have gas tank and Evac charcoal canister removal on Ram. Took me forever just to find a video of somebody removing the gas tank and Evac charcoal canister on a Ram. For some reason after gas tank strap recall in Canada I have a big hole in the plastic on the top of my evap charcoal canister thanks to the dealer. The gas cap light then engine light came on 2 Days after getting the recall done.

When I changed the charcoal canister the molding Inlet hole must have been leaking fumes and actually torched out it made a big hole where you could see the charcoal inside. Installed another charcoal canister from the Wrecker and my gas cap light went off all fixed cost me $200 I guess it's worth it considering the stress of fighting a dealer who denies any wrongdoing and corporate FCA.

Easier to take out bed bolts on drivers side. Loosen passenger side . Remove rear drivers side wheel and Jack bed up . 2x4 and floor Jack. Brace bed with 4x4 inbetween frame and bed . 2 he job.

Just wondering are you upgrading your fuel pump because you had issues with it? Just a couple days ago I just spent 700 bucks at the dealership having my fuel pump and fuel level sensor replaced because of a faulty fuel sensor the trouble code was p0463 fuel level sensor High circuit. This is a very common problem in these trucks the Mopar fuel pump and sensor are junk and I'm hoping it becomes a recall one day and Chrysler will refund my money!🤑 One can only hope I guess lol!!

I'm having the same issue with my 2014. Last few days my check engine light comes on and shows the fuel sensor error. Seems to happen at around 1/2 to 3/4 tank full. I've read online that you can potentially just replace the level sensor portion vs the whole pump. But my local dealer says they'd charge 400 bucks just to drop the tank. Looks like i'll either deal with it myself or have the sensor be glitchy.

get a can of sea foam, get the big one. have about of 1/4 tank of gas, dump the sea foam and fill the gas at least to 3/4 tank. do it a couple times and see if that help to clean the lines.
