I just fitted one to my 2 month old Kawasaki Z900RS and it’s made a helluva difference to the snatchy throttle which these new bikes are notorious for. Now I can ride it without feeling that the throttle is an on/off switch at small throttle openings. The bike now rides like it should have come out of the factory, except they don’t because of these stupid lean burn Euro regulations. Highly recommend the Booster Plug (and the Z900RS!).

Great video! I didn't know about the boosterplug for these. I bought my '09 versys last year with 2,700 miles on it (I'm up to about 7,000 miles now). I had the same problems as you. Very jerky on-off throttle action, clunky shifts, and popping through the airbox on deceleration. All my instincts led me to believe it was running too lean, and indeed it was. After research, I found the throttle position sensor on a lot of these were set to the lean side. I got my hands on a copy of the factory service manual for the tps voltage specs and ordered a kawasaki tps harness test lead to hook my multi meter up to. Indeed the tps was set on the very bottom of the voltage spec range. So I adjusted it ever so slightly to where it was right in the middle of the voltage spec range stated in the manual. That tiny change fixed it all! It was like a new bike afterwards. Smooth shifts, smooth on-off throttle action, and no more airbox popping. I do have a US non-california model. So mine does not have an o2 sensor for feedback and is open loop all the time. I'm not sure if this was an issue or not on the european and california model versys' like yours but this was how I rectified the "lumpy bottom" issue that you spoke of in your videos.
@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
+Nicholas Tyler Thanks Nicholas! Interesting to hear that your US V was running lean, but glad it was an easy fix. It's been found that the non O2 US models have a different ECU mapping to the Euro ones. Richer at the low end giving smoother throttle response and softer engine braking. So imagine just how lean it would have been on a Euro bike! 😂 With that in mind i don't think the TPS adjustment was enough to smooth out our bucking broncos this side of the water. Luckily this little widget seems to fix it right up. Of course in the other direction, on a US non O2 bike the Boosterplug wouldn't work SO well because the mix would be rich ALL the time. It's the O2 sensor that reigns in mix at fixed throttle positions you see. Ride safe mate and enjoy your smoothed out V!

Phillips screwdrivers are designed for furniture assembly to “cam out” when to much torque is applied saving the wood threads in the furniture from stripping. Japanese motorcycles use JIS or Japanese industrial standard screwdrivers. Vessel is one company that makes them. That is why the heads of your screws are ruined. You are using the wrong screwdriver.
@AndyManCam6 жыл бұрын
+cyclesrfun2001 I think Phillips is a misnomer we all use for the wrong tools. Like calling a Dyson a hoover. I think the biggest problem is that the fixings appear to be made of toffee! That and an element of ham-fisted impatience! 😂

Check out Madstad screens, pricey, but their system works for taller folks. Oh and phillips screwdrivers don't like cold tool boxes, so they will migrate to the top of refrigerators, inbetween couch cushions, under bedding, under the bed, sitting on a toilet tank or left under a sink. You'll find at least a dozen phillips #2 if you go and scour all of those locations guaranteed.

When I watched this first in 2016 it was interesting but didn't mean much as I had the fazer, and only ridden carbed bikes. Now I have my modern fuel injection single (where the engine braking is stronger than the twin pot Brembos on the front) I totally get it! Especially feathering the clutch on the low speed corners/junctions! I reckon also well worth the £115 they currently go for. Once January is out of the way it will be a definite purchase. Cheers!

@badapple655 жыл бұрын
My huge improvement which you mentioned was the lack of engine braking but even better yet mine used to engine brake even at 1/2 mph at very slow parking lot speeds so i was forced to squeeze clutch lever in and out feathering the friction zone constantly. That annoying problem solved as well.
@AndyManCam4 жыл бұрын

Definitely not snake oil, I stuck a Power Commander on my old Husky TE 610 and it made a similar difference, smoothing out response. It was on the choppy side for sure. Choppy response is definitely a fueling issue, and in some cases with the newest throttle by wire, it can be response curve too. All correctable by a plugin module when available.

It certainly did the trick for me. And as I remember the Tracer was SUPER snatchy down at the bottom. On the ride to Italy I was still getting about the same mileage as before. I like your sense of humour too.Thanks a million.

Great work. It seems that apart from their top line sports bikes, manufacturers don't really refine the fueling on the majority of their bikes. A dyno tuning session would probably fix it bit most tuners can't access the ECU because they are locked for emissions reasons. This seems like an ideal compromise. Keep up the great work.
@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
Ideal and, in the grand scheme of things, pretty cheap. Not to mention easily reversible. I hate the way the manufacturers stunt performance in this way. Nice to see there are ways around it. Apparently the other option with my bike was to fit a mk1 US ECU as it has a totally different fuelling map. But this plug was a little bit easier and less nailbiting brain transplantage required!!

9:50 Love the left hand glove! xD Btw awesome video, my 2017 Versys 650 is exactly the same - jerky throttle, insane engine braking and don't even try shifting without feathering the clutch. You can't just roll on, shift, drop the clutch and roll back on seamlessly, it's always choppy. And letting go of the throttle pretty much requires a seat belt. xD But the dilemma I face is between being a frugal person and wanting as good a fuel economy as possible, and having a smooth throttle response thus increasing my comfort and safety as a result. I will seriously consider installing one of these things in the future (had my V for 6 months now and still getting used to it).
@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
Haha! Thats the racey burlesque glove. To show a little hand-ankle and keep you interested! I honestly didn't notice any real change in my fuel economy. I toured through switzerland and northern italy and was still getting around 55mpg with the plug installed. The most important thing for me was that I enjoyed riding the bike again as the jerkiness actually ruined it a bit for me.

hey Andy! I recognize the problems with the clutchles up and downshifts, I've got that too! I also thought it was me that needed some proper training first before I can do it smoothly. Did your bike also sometimes misfire at low rmp? On my bike it sounds like it's blowing the air back through the butterflyvalve into the airbox again.. kinda weird.. If so, did it fix that? The other thing is, I actually like the 'throwing an anker out' off throttle. I think it costs like one tire extra on wearing down two tires, but well.. That's its character? I quite like it that it's a bit lumpy and bumpy, stumpy and shakey below 2,500 rpm. Getting below 1,500 rpm in higher than 1st gear is like you gotta tow some trailer, but avoiding that. I quite like it. If I'd ever consider buying somthing like this it would be for the smooth slow manouverability in 1st and 2nd gear, that's a big plus though.. Overall sounds like you miss a 4 banger in your life ;) Let us know if you notice some difference in tire wear and fuel consumption! I guess no pops and crackles through your exhaust now anymore? :( Ride safe!
@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
There you go Dennis! It's not you, it's the bike! :D Mine used to misfire all the time too. Like a muffled "pft" and revs dropped for a second. This plug has fixed that 75 - 80% almost never happens now. I put new tyres on before Italy and about 6000km later they still look like there's way more than half left. I think reduced engine braking combined with the reduced acceleration because of my different gearing have combined to give me never ending tyres! Oh and don't worry, the extra fuel being thrown in by the plug means MORE pops and crackles than ever before!! :D
@denniskakkenberg63968 жыл бұрын
Haha, luckily it is'nt me then! The never ending tyres sounds quite good! Will save me some money then. usually it's one rear tyre a year, could be 1,5 with the boosterplug installed then I hope. can't wait to see your vids in Italy! Last summer was amazing on my versys there! I found the versys perfect for the job, light, flickable, and enough poke to get you up the hill, enough brakes for downhill but engine braking helped a lot to prevent overheating. I wish you the best in 2017!

Andy - you are a brilliant diddly-dabbler but (you're going to hate me for this)..... - get a cordless drill and a box of driving bits - get a sheet of plywood, hammer about fifty nails into it. Bolt it to the wall. Put every tool in the box on the nails. - Put hooks in the ceiling and then you can hold things up (like fuel tanks) with bungee cords. - never buy an injection bike ;-)

Hi Andy! Is this a permanent solution ? I am about to order a BP myself but I am concerned that the ECU will adjust to the new values after a certain period. Mine is a 2013 model.
@AndyManCam2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel. I took mine off shortly before i sold the bike and it definitely felt a bit jerkier. The way the BP works is that the ECU is supposed to ‚learn‘ that something is up and correct it. But there’s always a delay between the O2 sensor reading false values and correcting. So with small throttle movements and on/off the throttle, the BP will always sneak it’s lies past the bikes lazy brain!

What do you think about fitting 1 tooth up on front sprocket to lower RPM when highway blasting and using Booster Plug to help with the inevitable 'overgearing' (too low RPM) in twistier sections. Not looking for power but wondering if you think when my engine lugs (3k ish), do you think BP would help out.
@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
+BMRTV You can check out the gear commander website to see how gearing changes are going to affect your speeds and chain wear. It's important to remember that 1 tooth at the front is going to have a much larger effect than 1 or 2 at the rear. I can't remember exactly, but i went down 2 at the back and the bike was perfect. With the BP of course. Without it was even more lumpy than with standard gearing!
@BMRTV7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I came across the sprocket discussion on the Kawi forum when I had my thought about merging the two ideas. Since I just bought a new rear sprocket (stock teeth, but much sexier) I figured I'd try the front (cheaper) just to see how it goes. If it works on the highway to qwell high sustained speed h-b vibration I'll probably then look at the BP just because everyone seems to love it (youtube and forum posters alike).

+BMRTV Gotcha. I would recommend the Ognibene rubber damped sprockets though. I bought one but never got to fitting it. Apparently they calm vibes and noise even more.

I am a bit skeptical since what the Booster Plug does is fool the ECU in thinking that it is getting colder air than it really is and thereby increasing the fuel going into the cylinders. But since these bikes are tuned pretty lean from the factory this thing might actually correct the lean tune and thereby smoothing out the throttle. Very well, you got me convinced. I am going to try it on my 2016 Vulcan S Cafe and see if it helps the choppy throttle. Thanks for the Video. Looks like you are in Germany. License Plate of the cars indicate Hansestadt Hamburg. Just watched the vid and I'm interested to hear if you've installed the BP on your Vulcan S? I have a Vulcan S as well and definitely the main gripe I have is the jerkiness of the throttle. Also, I purchased an aftermarket slip-on exhaust but removed it quickly due to the deceleration popping that just screams "this bike isn't tuned right". Hoping to remedy that...
@ThomasRSmith-og7zo6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, I have not yet installed the BP on my bike but a friend of mine has in combination with the Danmoto aftermarket exhaust and he couldn't be happier. He got the bike Dynoed to see if he had lost any torque or HP but to his surprise he gained a little of both and there is no twitchy throttle. Several people in the Vulcan S forum have done the same with similar results. Now if you are just want to get rid of the twitchy throttle there is an easier and cheaper way. It's called the Throttle tamer and it adjusts the cam of the throttle tube for less jerky acceleration. Everyone that installed the Throttle tamer seems to like it. I will more than likely add an aftermarket exhaust so I will go the BP route but I have to save up for the exhaust first. Here is the link to my friends Dyno results with the Danmoto and the booster plug. Hope that helps. www.vulcanforums.com/forums/130-vulcan-650-s/283073-dyno-danmoto-exhaust-boosterplug.html

I know exactly what you're on about with that throttle response on the versys. Off the throttle for engine braking and it's exactly what you said it's like. It's like that parachute from drag racers. Might be tempted in getting myself one of them. Got any links for UK?

Has anyone installed this on a US model without O2 sensor? What where your results?
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
Without the O2 sensor will likely just give you terrible gas mileage. The O2 sensor is the bit that restricts the Boosterplug to small throttle movements and changes of state. Without it, the fule will always be jacked up by 6%. Might give you the riding feel you want, but could also mean wasted fuel at fixed throttle positions and possible fouling of the plugs.

Hello Andy,Thanks for the video, I had my laugh for today!I wonder if this would work for the stuttering feeling you get when cruising on a constant speed. I have a 2012 ER-6N. When I'm driving on any constant speed it feels like it's adjusting the injection all the time, resulting in a very small stuttery feeling. I took out the O2 sensor and drove for a while and I noticed the feeling was gone, ofcourse since it wasn't able to measure the exhaust gasses.It's allready worth it for the throttle response but still, if I'd need a full remap for the weird feeling on constant speeds I dont want to spend the money on this boosterplug first.Hope you can let me know if it takes care of both problems.Thanks!Greetings,Youri

Hello Andy, do you know if the Versys in the USA are any different than yours? Just wondering if my 2013 Versys might benefit from a Booster Plug? Thanks a lot!
@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
+Mark Treadway As far as i know yours wouldn't benefit. I can't remember when they changed the rules over there with emissions. Does it have an O2 sensor poking out of the exhaust link pipe? If not then the boosterplug will just make your fuel mix rich all of the time and you'll get worse gas miles. It's the O2 sensor that 'switches off' the boosterplug after its done it's stuff at the low end. Though Also if you don't have an O2 sensor, that also means you have a US spec ECU which is mapped differently and as such gives performance very similar to the boosterplug anyway!

Hi Andy, fantastic videos. I have passed my test a few months ago and got a Versys as my first bike. I hadn't realised that on off jerking was due to the injection and thought it was me. I don't know too much about bikes yet and all the talk of the O2 sensor. I have an original exhaust still (enjoyed the video of you changing yours and plan to also in the future) would the boosterplug work fine with that and not suck fuel? Thanks
@AndyManCam7 жыл бұрын
+Matt Coulson Thanks Matt. Congratulations on the pass! I considered taking my bike back to the seller and having an argument until i googled it at found out that it's normal! Bloody Kawasaki! Should be absolutely fine with the stock can mate. Might even be a smidge smoother as the mix will be a tiny bit richer. But the O2 sensor will always take over and ensure good mix for cruising.

@@AndyManCam Its not just Kawasaki...its *every* fuel-injected bike. Every one. In order to conform to strict emissions standards modern bikes' ECUs are deliberately mapped to run leaner than old (dirtier) carby bikes.

So have taken the plunge and ordered a Booster Plug, it should be delivered by the end of the week so all being well will be fitted Friday night. I'm hoping to coincide this delicate work with my usual Friday evening consumption of 10 cans of Stella! Also bought a Tomtom Bandit and mic against all credible reviews (due to poor sound) and looking forward to sticking my first Vlog on KZbin soon. Should be entertaining with a poorly fitted Booster and possible bike explosion, at least you won't have to suffer my screams of pain from the crap recording quality of the Bandit. Keep up the good work.

@AndyManCam5 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. I've not ridden a newer one but some say yes while others say no. I suppose it depends how sensitive you are to it. I would imagine that they have not erradicated it fully as the problem is inherent to the emissions control.

Any that have look at the sparkplugs before and after installed the boostplugg?
@AndyManCam5 жыл бұрын
I looked at mine when I serviced the bike a year after. All good. Factory mapping makes the bike run lean at the low end, which is bad for the plugs and also makes the engine run hot. The Boosterplug richens that up a tiny bit and the net effect is a healthy spark plug and a few degrees cooler running.
@clivedavis38295 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great video. Does the Booster Plug actually increase power? Everybody seems to talk about how smooth the BP makes the engine but nobody mentions if there is a power increase.
@AndyManCam5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Clive. That's an easy one. There is no power increase. Not one single horsepower. But that's not what it's for. It just smooths out the low end and leaves all of the rest well alone.

how much did you pay for the boosterplug? The components are worth something about 15€, I would understand if this thing costs 50€ but the prices I've seen its 3 times that...
@AndyManCam8 жыл бұрын
They are €120 for my bike. I was given it for free to try, but I'd gladly pay it again given the results. That's a fraction of the cost of a Powercommander and a drop in the ocean of the cost of a Dyno tuning session. And that's only if your ECU isn't locked at the factory. I'd also like to reiterate that I am under no obligation to give a good review and I will get NOTHING from the sales of these plugs. Sure you could probably make your own for 15€ but how long would it take? Factor in a few mistakes and some trial and error and then multiply that time by how much you earn per hour and you'll have the true representative cost of this plug.
