US Navy Gunner's Mate still active. Been in for 10 years now. Graduated boot camp August 2010. 0:53 RDC-Recruit Division Commander also known as "red rope". RDC's train with their own gender unless you have a mixed Division then the RDC's will also be mixed. They only mix during training. 2:15 Some RDC's want you to be loud and "sound off like you got a pair" but this is the new Navy, the kinder Navy. 4:45 I've heard the same thing about people coming out of navy boot camp in worse shape but those are only the people who actually workout. Navy gets kids who have never been to a gym before or lift weights and have to change them into sailors in 2 months. I'm not an RDC but haveing half the food served be bad doesnt help. 5:30 Yes all the stuff we get in boot camp is under the beds to train how to fold your cloths in a way so you have just enough for the basic cloths to fit like on a ship. 5:45 Hats, Ok the hat deal is this. The color of the hat means something, like the red in the video. The hat on video means he's an instructor for the shooting range. Having the hat makes it easier for the recruit to know who is in charge at the time. the color hats also are in the fleet used for training evolutions. 6:44 Guns, Navy boot camp at least when I went through. We shot M9 Berreta and Mossberg 500. You dont shoot often just until you qualify then thats it until you get to the fleet. 7:20 Tattoo's, Sailors go to alot of places and alot of places have symbols that mean thing's. Sailors take those symbols and add those meanings to their ever growing body art collection. Some tattoo's are also apart of tradition. 13:32 Dropout, Navy wont drop you if they can help you. Navy calls it ASMO which is short for Assignment Memorandum Order. This is used to put a recruit into a Special Program Division to help him or her. 14:40 This isnt the best example for the "hurry up lets go". For me at least the RDC would come in yell, "hurry up let's go" then tell the recruit leader they have x amount of minutes to get his guys out and the RDC will just walk out and wait for them. -also in the Navy, RDC's arent called "sir" they are called by their rank if they are enlisted. Petty Officer(E4-6), Chief(E7), Senior Chief(E8) and Master Chief(E9). If you call an enlisted "sir" some times they will correct you and inform you they work for a living. 16:22 PT, I does get cold and it does get hot makes it easier to just PT indoors also imo you're on a ship you're indoors most of the time anyways. 18:05 Demerit Chit, It's nothing special it's like getting a speeding ticket that you have to pay and the RDC's will make sure the whole Division pays for those chits. 24:00 Backpacks, You are correct those backpacks are for school. I never got one but in Navy boot camp you go to many different classes 25:20 Dress Uniform, Dress blues are the classic looking ones you see in old shows/cartoons, like Popeye. The Whites you see are just inverted colors. Blues are tradition, Whites are for summer when its hot out.

When I was in the Army there was no requirement to know how to swim. Don't know if there is now or not. In regard to what you said about muscled-up guys sinking. One day, about a year and a half after I joined the Army, our Platoon Sergeant decided that afternoon's training would take place at the pool and he directed us all to change and meet him there. At the pool he had us jump into the deep end to tread water. We did. I was in the water when someone on the side of the pool pointed below me and looked alarmed. I put my face into the water and looked down and there was my bunkmate, standing on the bottom of the pool with his arms at his side, looking up at me with a look of puzzlement on his face. I dove down to him with another buddy and we grabbed him and hauled him to the surface. It turned out that he'd never been taught to swim - in fact he'd never tried in his life. He was too proud to admit it so he'd jumped into the pool when ordered to do so. He was a really really ripped guy. I don't think he had an ounce of fat on him. He'd sunken like a rock to the bottom and he was actually hard to get to the surface because he wasn't helping us and he weighed about 180 pounds. Thank god he'd been able to hold his breath without passing out or he might have drowned.

After it was finished they were told to clean up everything in fifteen minutes or they would get the shit smoked out of them. 6:20 Navy wear covers anytime their in a duty status (standing watch) whether armed or unarmed. Sitting at a radar screen or monitoring an engine panel are watch stations. The Navy is very technical. Monitoring those components is accomplished by watch-standers.

@Mark Gibson because most Army Posts and AFBs don't have their own power plant, sewage plant and a host of propulsion equipment to move the entire base. Boot camp for me in 2006 you never shot a live weapon lol we shot lazor guns that were treated like live weapons.. that one was a joke I'd shot 22s and 9m bedore boot camp, it didnt fully prepare everyone for the recoil when we got to the ship. Also when we were spoken to we were expected to sound off with purpose, if not they'd ask who's division is this and theyd leave lmao then come walk back in and say let's try that, again. We didn't have backpacks when I went to bootcamp we carried everything by hand lol If you get dropped for whatever reason if you can be you will get picked up in a new division. This happens mostly within the 1st 2 weeks of boot camp

As for covers in the Navy, we wear a Command ball cap. Since these recruits are not sailors yet and are not assigned to any command, they wear a ball cap that states recruit. The big thing now is that once they finish training and make that transition, they are given a ball cap that says Navy, now representing that they have completed training and now a Sailor. Now for the next day or two, when they march around, the other recruits know that they have finished and earn the title that they are a Sailor. The backpack carries their possible attire they may need, such as jacket, rain coat, or school materials. I know this will be foreign to a Marine and I respect that. I was a Marine brat for 22 yrs and was a submariner for 24 yrs and my son is preparing to be a submariner and been in for 9 months and I have learned what most of your questions are about from his experience in boot camp. He said it was a joke, I thought it was a joke in 84 and I have the upmost respect for you Marines. We do different jobs so of course, our training is different. I hate those uniforms also, glad I retired the year before they were issued. Bring back the dungarees and let us look like sailors again. Love your videos and keep them coming. Thank you for your service.

Navy bootcamp changed since I went 20 years ago. I remember when I went through we got yelled at all the time. It was actually quite competitive against other divisions. I actually thought of it was a mixture of summer school and summer camp. But I sure learned a lot. The backpack thing is new. We used to wear guard belts and strapped up a rain coat on the back if we needed to and carried everything else. I also remembered we were among the last divisions to actually do service week. So much has changed. Drilled everywhere. Now they go down a flight of stairs to get chow.

I was thinking the same thing. Even in '05 training didn't look like this. The recruit trainers were always in our faces and dressing us down. I was in on of the first two fully integrated units and it seemed like everything we did was under a microscope. The units were pretty competitive. I remember we got blown out of the tunnel our 2nd day and had to sing at the top of our lungs half the night. We never let another unit be heard over us again.

I was in USN in the mid 70’s, boot camp Great Lakes. We had a Company Commander (same as DI), no assistants. At that time they appointed recruits who took on responsibility. We called them RPOC’s (pronounced “are pox” ... stood for Recruit Petty Officer in Charge). He had an assistant, and we had a few other recruits that took on additional duties for boot camp. Such as: company clerk, we had a guy that was responsible for some aspect of “education”, a company Master at Arms who was responsible for something related to facilities and equipment, and maybe one or two others. I could write a lot more about the experience, even though it was nearly 50 years ago! We were more ‘vocal’ than the guys in this video, and our CC was pretty demanding. It was a ton of fun though, although a few times it got a little tough. Probably because I challenged myself to do the best that I could, under all circumstances. Anyhow, Jameson, I enjoy watching these videos with you, and hearing most of your thoughts / reactions.

Back in the 1970s Greatlakes was fine in the summertime. We did our pt. outside even when it was raining. I was overweight when I went in and they were on my ass as soon as I got off the bus. I made it without getting set back. They were a little harder on me for the first three weeks than others of my company, but it made me pass. They taught you to swim after you jumped off a 40-foot tower representing a ship. I had to jump in the water and I had told them I couldn't swim. So, when I jumped, I seen the splash, seen the diver and the diver said I was out of the water before he could do anything. Then they taught you how to swim. We never had back packs while in bootcamp. They don't do service week anymore. The instructors we had yelled constantly yelled at us. We wore our ball cap indoors as well as outdoors. The ball cap was part of our work uniform. We shot rifles when we were in Navy bootcamp. Never heard of getting demerit chits in bootcamp. We went to captain's mast in our quarter deck at our barracks. We had foot locker at the edge of our beds. On the ship we got the bunker locker under your bunk. And we had a half locker on the bulkheads We never had the Cracker Jack uniforms. We had the Good Humor Ice Creme uniforms. .

I went through in 2008. If that gym is same building, believe that's a 1/8th mile track and the air just sucks the moisture right out. I came from up north and was so used to running outside in the winter it was surprisingly miserable indoors. And yeah, the PT wasn't particularly intense if you took care of yourself before you went in. It's best to know how to swim. Your remediation happens on a separate schedule which makes it a much bigger pain. We got yelled at a fair bit, once got a chair thrown at us, but overall the attitude was be respectful and just do what you're told and shut up. I was also 23 and pretty fit so I just shut up and did what I needed and slid by mostly. The 17 year olds looked to have a rougher time of it.

When I was in Navy boot in 1990, it wasn’t polite at all. We were yelled at constantly, had PT everyday, and were punished everyday for every minor infraction. We were not allowed to walk anywhere outside of the boundary of our barracks. We were required to run (or formally march, if in formation) everywhere, and we ran (at least 2 miles) and did pushups every single day. Basically, we did our PRT (PFT) everyday. We had trainers called CC’s (company commanders). There were 3 RTC’s at the time, San Diego, Great Lakes, and Orlando. Only Orlando had females. This version of boot training is a shock for me. I was in the last class to train with the M1 Garand (for infantry marching only). We also worked out with it. It was literally retired halfway thru our training. The swim qualification training was way more intense than this. Even if they couldn’t swim, they had to fail the qual before given swim lessons. So, basically they had to nearly drown. And we had SEAL’s running all the PT/swim quals. They made us step off a 10-12’ platform into the pool. The SEAL trainer has a safety pole and it was used to lead the recruit to the edge. They told you if you panic and pull on the pole, they’ll give you the pole until you stop pulling. If they ran out of pole, they let you drown, then pulled you out and revived you. No recruit drowned in my company, and we had at least 3 or 4 non-swimmers. 2 of them sunk to the bottom immediately. Of course they panicked, but they quickly overcame it when the SEAL yelled at them, reminding them of the consequences. “Stop pulling! I’ll let you drown!,” was more than enough motivation to get it together, I suppose. I was lucky being from Hawaii, treading water for 5 minutes then swimming the length of the pool in 3 minutes wasn’t a big deal, even while getting kicked in the face a few times by other recruits. We only had to hump our full sea bags to our temp and permanent barracks. It was all of our uniforms etc. and it weighed like 40-50 lbs. A few times, to punish us, they made us close up all the windows and doors in our barracks, then made us do pushups next to our bunks for like 20 minutes straight. And since we waxed our decks every other day, about half the recruits would slip and face plant during the exercise. They also punished us by making us put on all of our sweaters and jackets, and do group sit-ups (where we had to link arms). In the gas chamber, our CC had an elevated viewing booth, where he could see everyone in the chamber. They made us take off our gas masks and hold it above our heads and drilled us by making us recite our general orders in a random sequence. If you didn’t perform to spec, they made you repeat it. We also weren’t allowed to put our masks back on. During a segment called, the DC (damage control) olympics, we competed against other companies in our division, by performing basic ship functions on a mock ship, like mooring lines, etc. The gas chamber had maze-like corridors and they filled it with fake smoke and CS gas and we had to form a snake line and find our way out. Funny story, during my time there, the Pendleton Marines accidentally burned down their galley, so they were cattle-carred to our galley for meals. It was interesting to get a glimpse into that aspect of Marine boot. I’ll be honest, this video kinda makes me sad. It makes me worried about how these recruits will act in a real life, stress filled emergency.

My NAVY boot camp was 42 years ago. Women not only did not train men. They trained separately from the men on the other end of RTC (Recruit Training Command). Our Company Commanders were one Chief Petty Officer Machinist Mate (SS){Submarine Service} and one Petty Officer First Class Boiler Technician. The Chief didn't come around much after the first 2 weeks. BT1 Freed was a man all by himself. Not a big guy but lean and weathered. He advanced my knowledge of perverted adjectives by light years (very much like Gunny Hartman). This man took about 100 of us and whittled it down to 60 and that was even after picking up the setbacks (what you now call roll backs). I still use some of his old salty sayings today. We had teamed up so well every guy that rolled in to us, graduated with us. We found out what their weakness were and put our best guys with them to school em up. This video is so milk toast compared to what I went through it's pathetic. I don't know how half of these kids got in they are so fat. There was NO walking in boot camp. If you weren't in formation you RAN DOUBLE TIME to wherever you were going. If you weren't running fast enough you would get crushed by whoever caught you and then they would report it to your Company Commander and he in turn would crush you again. THOROUGHLY. I really don't understand the bitching about working 18 hour days. We worked 18 to 20 hours a day at sea and liberty was a rare bird. When SHTF and you were parked on station in the Persian Gulf or off the coast of Lebanon. Literally 70 to 80 days, back off for UNREP for a day and then go back on station for another 70 to 80 days rinse and repeat til it's time to go home 9 months later. When men were men and sheep were nervous.

I remember one of my RDC's PO2 Davis she always said something to me that really hurt my feelings along the lines of "just kill yourself". I was really sensitive back then and it was really tough, but it prepared me for all the mean shit people say in the fleet. Especially when you're a nub on a sub. Yeah I grew up a mommas boy thank God I left the nest when I did. Oh yeah my chief was quiet and never raised his soft voice. He would come in after the yelling was done and then we knew we were really fucked. That soft voice was the most scary.

I was an RDC 2001-2004 and yes, stress cards were introduced towards the end of my tour but as an experiment. Not sure how they panned out. Marching drill was also a big deal but slowly degraded as the new larger "ships" were created which housed galleys and classes reducing the need to march everywhere. As far as intensity, some RDCs were more intense and animated which resembled the idea we have of bootcamp experience. The RDCs presented in the video seemed very chill, which was mirrored onto the recruit's demeanor. Maybe the stress cards had real power. Or maybe, they were at a '2' since they were being filmed. Military bearing is a discipline and something that should be engrained in every member's character. Boot camp offers that opportunity. I hope we keep some intensity.

Navy vet here. I was a little surprised to see them still wearing ball caps, which went away in the fleet when they rolled out the blue camouflage around 2009-2010. They were a regular part of the old utility/dungaree style uniform until then. When I passed through boot in 2006, right before graduation they made it a pretty big deal to replace our Recruit ball caps with ones labeled Navy, much like when a Marine recruit earns their globe.

Ex Navy 8 years, went in 1999. Separated in 07. Even in 99 Navy boot camp was a joke. There was definitely a lot more yelling and colorful metaphors. Especially the first night. But still pretty easy. The hardest part for me was staying awake every day because of little sleep. I was annoyed we didn't fire any weapons in basic. I think because of budget. Navy had low funding during that time from the gov because of clinton's cuts. So today they fire pistols at least which is good.

I don't even recognize this, I went to boot camp over 40 years ago. I couldn't swim, but I could stay afloat and dog paddle. I seriously thought there was a chance I would drown when I had to jump into the pool, but I tell you, I jumped. I did not want to find out what would happen if I hesitated. I don't remember ever wearing covers indoors, maybe when we were on watch? (40+ years ago) These uniforms look like they were designed by an ex marine that hates the navy! I have to disagree with you on the cracker jack uniforms, I was in during the time when the guys were wearing "ice cream man" suits.

In the Vietnam Era recruits never got beaten by their Company Commanders. However, LOTS of them did injure themselves and got bloody when they accidentally slipped in the shower and smashed their heads repeatedly into the tile walls. Luckily their CO's were there to help them wash the blood down the drain.

Except in the privacy of their locked offices, with their goon squad present. The CC's had bets with eachother as to which company would win the most awards, and semi-delegated revenge down the line when inspections were failed, chits pulled, et al. Our CC wrapped his hand with a towel so as to not leave any marks, but not his goons. No such term as code red, but you knew who bought it the next day!

@@ghoj7489 Sounds about right to me. Nobody wanted to get a "Blanket Party" which involved guys holding a blanket tightly over a screw-up recruit as he slept in his bunk and other recruits punching the crap out of him. Of course, none of that kind of stuff could ever happen without the CC's being behind it. Things have certainly changed in the U.S. military in the past few years. Guys used to get beaten up if their boots and brass weren't shined. I heard they recently had a "Drag Queen" competition at a military base.

That female chief was a PO1 when I went to bootcamp back in 2017. She was the 1st RDC for our sister division. I can tell you from personal experience, she is putting on a lighter face for the camera. While I was over there, we didn't really see any fat RDC's or RDC's that were out of shape. Maybe some stocky ones, but they all ran the PFA with us and worked with us to better train ourselves.

My RDC’s would come in with coffee, joke around talking about sports with the recruits, and even played music during PT (basic old lady stretching exercises) the only time we would really get screamed at was when were out marching in front of other divisions, so to make themselves look like they’re actually doing their job lol. It was for sure a fat camp and we only ran maybe 4 times in 8 weeks. Eating three nice meals a day and sitting around for weeks at a time folding clothes and reading a book doesn’t really get you battle ready. But, Navy is supposed to know how to operate on a ship, not in a field (unless you’re damn lucky to go greenside as a HM). Pistol training was fun but a joke. Damage Control training was fun. Swimming was fun seeing people fail. African Americans have the most trouble, no matter how good of shape you’re in. Once they take the plunge they panic and need divers to bring them up. Not all African Americans, but it’s the majority for sure. one lady took 17 times to pass a jump and 50 meter swim and float for 5 minutes. Getting dropped from a division really depends, but if you have an impressive asvab, the RDC’s will try and make excuses and vouch for you. If you’re just a dummy, you will get set back. Recruits get pulled and sent home every day for various reason, something popped in their security clearance check, or kids just quit, (yes you can quit anytime in Navy fat camp but you will have to stay there and watch your division graduate before they let you go home, so just stick it out). They have separate building for the quitters where they just watch TV and read books all day. When we were near them we always accidentally kicked their bags and feet. My rack mate got sent home because he was supposedly sleep walking (not really helpful when you’re in the middle of the ocean)
