I’ve been using the Tab Ultra for a month, my very first eink tablet, and it has been amazing. Browsing the web without eye strain is a big difference for me, compared to my iPad. For reading and notes, of course it’s great, but it has been much more than that. I’ve checked my statistics, and I’ve been using it on average 8 hours a day for the last 30 days, the best purchase I’ve made in months.

Excellent review, as usually. It helps a lot having a profound insight of these devices like the ones you provide. Nevertheless, there's a circumstance that I'd appreciate for your expertise sight to bring advice on: I've seen in the EU Boox Store that the Air 2 Plus (with the 2 pen Pro) and the Tab Ultra (without the keyboard case, which I don't think I would use, rather I'd take my bluetooth one) are just around 50 € apart. In general, I want an e-reader/note device for reading, writing and studying, however I do appreciate new technologies; having that little difference on the price, which do you think would be more worth it?

Just one question, which viewing mode did you use in the reading performance test? Do you think changing it would impact battery life significantly while turning pages?
@MyDeepGuide2 жыл бұрын
I used the Normal mode, since NeoReader is still using the old Normal, Regal and Speed modes. And no, normally I don't notice any major impact on battery life between modes, however, Speed mode should theoretically be slightly mode efficient, but not something I could measure.

I'm a University Student in Computer Science and I noticed that the subjects are getting far more theory heavy and there are tons of diagrams so I think having just a laptop isn't good enough for me anymore. I have been dragging home stacks of paper and cannot be bothered to sort them out at the end of the day, so keeping them structured is impossible. I stumbled across the remarkable 2 and almost ordered it out of curiosity and desperation but then decided to put a little more time into looking into the rabbit hole. Needless to say, I just ordered the Boox Tab Ultra without the keyboard, as I found it to be NOT much more expensive than the note air 2 plus and also far more capable than the Kindle Scribe (Unfortunately, though maybe that may change in the future) I hope I don't regret my purchase and am looking forward to testing it soon, though I think at first I will probably only use it to annotate PDFs, write down my notes and browse the web in the evening because honestly, I have been staring at screens for so much in the last 2 semesters I prefer not to anymore. Nice review… I would like you to do a more complete review on note taking on this device, especially on the latest firmware update 3.3.1 As you pointed out in a different video the SuperNote 2.6 version update has taken the handwriting to text conversion and inserting hyperlinks to a new level. I would like Boox to know they need to get these features on their next update especially when exporting Notes, I’d like the hyperlinks to work on the exported PDFs for example. There is also some bugs that need to be cleaned up when converting the handwriting to text and then inserting the text on the page… it’s messy and hard to work with as it inserts the text on top of the handwriting…. so just a few more tweeks. This would make the Tab Ultra the ultimate device. I have ordered one and will receive it in a few days so I’m not dissing this ereader, I just want to see it improved. Thanks and looking forward to your more comprehensive review on Boox’s note taking app. 😊

Thank you so much for the comprehensive well-crafted review. Just a quick question-- have you ever tested VoIP apps on the Tab Ultra? On previous Boox devices, calls could be placed/ received, but no amount of settings tweaks could make the otherwise functional microphone usable for phone calls. Tested on the Note 2, Note 5, Max Lumi and Nova C. I'm hoping that with this device being fully Google Play Certified (for the first time ever?), that VoIP apps (Google Voice, Discord, etc) will function fully

I ordered the Boox Tab Ulta the other day, after having checked reviews on your and other sites. Unfortunately, for anybody who intends to use the device for handwritten note taking, i would recommend to look for another device. The handwiting conversion on the Boox Tab Ultra under firmware 3.3.2 is unusable, as there are too many severe bugs. a) When converting handwritten notes. words are not converted but entirely deleted. I assume these are words, that were not recognized, how ever I would prefer to see missspelled words that are tracked by a spell checker, than having words ommited. b) The reflow function simply seem not to do work. Using the Reflow Button, i would assume that lines should be combined to create a continuous paragraph. Instead, line breaks still occure where they occore i the hand written text. Occasionally, two lines are get combined into one, but i have no idea what the rules for this are. In addition, there no obvious way to get the converted text back into the original page. c) The function labelled "Original" is flawed as well, the result is a mess with individual words printed in various font sizes , and there seems to be no option to transfer the text back to the original page as well. d) Insert text does what it is supposed to do, but unfortunately places the converted text on the same layer directly on top of the handwitten text. Good luck selecting the handwritten text to delete it. Once can create an empty layer prior to textconversion, in that case the converted text is placed on this new Layer. All of this is a shame, as the overall experience with the device is as expected, the device is snappy, the handwriting experience is pleasant and the build quality is good as well.

Thanks for the review! Let's say I am thinking of buying a BOOX device for academic reading and text processing and I value good performance, flawless workflow integration but I don't necessarily need the keyboard and the camera features. Would you say it's still worth going for the TabUltra or would like the Note Air 2 Plus (or another device) suffice?
@DesignThinkerer Жыл бұрын
The air 2 plus is a bit too slow for text processing in third party apps. You could try to cast your pc screen on the air 2 plus but there is a noticeable lag for rendering (the input itself is fine, so you could use it as a screenless drawing tablet for your pc by using spacedesk). I dont have the ultra but it looks much more responsive in the video than my air 2 plus, so I think I will send it back and take the upgrade. If you want to use feature rich text editor and need good performances in non stock app, go for the ultra, else if handwriting and basic text typing is enough then the air 2 plus will suffice.

Another excellent review, thanks. You're right--it is more like a tablet p.c. than an e-reader. It would be great if they would consider making a somewhat stripped-down (and less expensive) e-reader/note-taking device with a pen, based on much the same design specs. "Full" Android and the same o.s. as this model, but no camera, mono speaker, single mic. Then again, maybe Amazon's upcoming 10" device will be the be-all and end-all for e-readers. (Then again, probably not.)

Excellent review, as always, Voja. I have a question about Neoreader. With the note app, there is a veritable Android 'share' option that is very useful. I can't seem to find this option in Neoreader. There's only an export option to the internal storage. Or am I missing something? Oh, and another question: what kind of nibs do you find go best with the slicker surface of the Tab Ultra?
@MyDeepGuide2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :) No, you are not missing anything. The workflow would be to export your marked up document as a new PDF file to internal storage, jump to it and then share the file by long pressing on it and choosing the share option. As for the nibs, I haven't had it long enough to know that, so I am still in the phase of experimentation with it :)
@GeertDeVooght2 жыл бұрын
@@MyDeepGuide Thank you for your quick reply! Good to know that I'm using the correct workflow, but I can't imagine why Boox doesn't make the 'Share' option available directly in NeoReader. Well, maybe in a future update... As for the nibs, I don't have a lot of experience writing on an e-ink note taking device (Tab Ultra is my first, actually), but I agree that the Boox Pen/nibs combination feels a little hard. I bought a Samung S6 Lite pen (on your recommendation :-) ) which I love (sleek, lightweight, eraser button), and I like using it with the HP grey nibs that you also recommended. The Samsung nibs are too soft for my taste. When you have a definite favorite nib, be sure to let us know through your channel! :-)

Hello again Voja, I think that I am just about ready to pull the trigger on getting a Tab Ultra. It seems to be the best fit from what is currently available. But before I do make the purchase I thought that I'd ask whether you knew of anything that might be coming out soon that would be competition to the Tab Ultra. I guess my main desires would be: e-Ink, Google Play, word processing (typing), either at least 512GB or an SD card slot, and a processor that would be powerful enough to approximate acting as a light duty laptop. ...color would be nice, also more RAM, HDMI, and hardwired internet.
@MyDeepGuide Жыл бұрын
Hi, no, not really. You have the Bigme Galy that is supposed to come out soon, but that is not going ro tick the majority of the boxes you listed. So no, currently the Tab Ultra and the TabX are the most powerful devices on the market, but TabX doesn't have the SD card slot, so technically speaking, Tab Ultra is the fastest and most powerful eink tablet on the market, at the moment. Something newer and better is always going to come up, so try to work with the requirement such as "does this device satisfy my needs" rather than "is it the best on the market out today" because the latter always has a very limited time frame.
@8pedro7 Жыл бұрын
@@MyDeepGuide Thank you Voja! That was very helpful. Yes the Tab Ultra does "satisfy my needs". Anything can happen, but I just wanted to minimize the chances that in a short while after I purchased, something that had more of the characteristics of the "ideal" became available.

You are the best e-book reviewer I know. Thank you. The only disappointment is the short battery life of BSR-based models. So, is it possible to turn off the GPU settings in the Android developer menu and deactivate the BSR function? If it slows down, but the battery lasts longer, it's attractive. I'm thinking of buying an Ultra if I can get a lot of battery life in the settings, since I don't have a problem with reading books if it's as fast as page.

How does the OCR functions work in other languages? Specifically in Arabic script. Will pdfs be scannable using OCR in foreign languages? My use case would be copying some words from pdfs into Google translate as a tool for language learning.

How does the typing compare to a conventional laptop/tablet? I've got an old Surface 3 that is a convenient size and good for straight up writing on, but blogging down under years of Windows updates. I'm sort of wondering if this could fill the combined role of a writing tablet and PDF reader? Especially on travel when I've already got 50t of work laptop and related junk I'm carting along. Wondering how it works for that.

The back gesture has been the standard on Android phones for years, and it still interferes with app sidebars and other stuff. I hate it and don't get why anyone would adopt it, or why google insists to keep it with no customization options. I really hope the older boox devices at least get an option to keep the old gestures...
@MyDeepGuide2 жыл бұрын
You can keep the old gestures and disable the side ones. It's just the default settings that have been changed.

Thank you for this detailed review, I ordered mine and waiting for it to be delivered. My question is about your battery test. I understand that the tab ultra has an HD mode which should use more battery, so when tested compared to the Air 1, did you use the same mode for both?

Yes.

As always, thanks for your very thorough and fair review. I have a Note Air 2 and certainly won’t be replacing or adding to that a Tab Ultra. I would always prefer a non e-ink tablet - Surface Pro 8, iPad Pro or Galaxy A8 - for any tablet or quasi enterprise work. As you indicate, the market for the Tab Ultra must be very, very limited - as I believe it will be (though not as drastically) for the Kindle Scribe. Do you really need e-ink screens in place of back lit screens for your tablet work? Clearly, up until now, most of us have got by without an e-ink screen. Who really - in any numbers - will want to spend the money of remedying that with a Tab Ultra? Especially considering its significant ergonomic drawbacks and that 227 ppi screen! Similarly, in terms of “restricted” appeal, I doubt that the 300 ppi screen of the Scribe will be enough to get lots of people buying it, especially when it’s Sticky Notes feature seems so gimmicky and clunky and its note-taking functionality so limited. However, at least for the Scribe, it will look very different from all other Kindles and so be bought by those who just want a new best bigger screened Kindle. The Tab Ultra faces competition from the excellent Note Air 2 (Plus) for, I suspect, a majority of e-ink Android device users, most of which devices are bought as e-readers and note takers which are not, bizarrely, the strongest points of the Tab Ultra. As a PS I should add that none of the above, as Voya clearly says, means that the Tab Ultra is to be avoided as a device. For some people it will be an ideal device even if very expensive when compared to a much simpler and - minus the e-ink! - much better spec’d device such as an iPad or Samsung Tablet. But I do wonder how many people there are who fall into that category? It is also a big disappointment that it doesn’t have 300 ppi. Rather like colour e-ink, I don’t think that “enterprise” e-ink devices are sufficiently compelling yet as alternatives to the very well established back lit tablet devices. But also like colour, their day will come …. I assume ….

So.... I'll be replacing my note air2 plus with the tab ultra 2 when it comes out in a year....

So this sounds like, if I'm looking for a tablet to mostly just take OneNote notes on and do day planning, I should probably go with the Air 2 + ?

I wish I had seen this video before ordering the Ultra as my ReMarkable replacement. I'd have chosen a different Boox device. Getting around and fixing settings sounds confusing, and the battery life sounds disappointing.

Help. Can you have different templates on different pages? I'm struggling to get that to work. I watched your note taking section, but it doesn't seem to have it. It seems you have to have the same template on every single page.
@MyDeepGuide Жыл бұрын
When you are in the Template Select menu, in the upper right corner you will see a gear icon, this is for Template Settings. When you tap on it, a new window will appear, and all the way at the bottom is the checkmark for "Apply To All Pages". If you uncheck it, it will then apply the selected template to the current page only.

Hello Voja, I love your in depth reviews while looking for the right eInk device for me. Thank you. I am wondering if through the Ultra's USB-C, with a a USB hub with HDMI, Ethernet, and multiple USB slots, will it connect (hard wired) with an external monitor and internet , printer, and storage devices?

Sorry, I just re-watched it and found the answer about LAN and HDMI. Do you know if it will take a hardwire tether ... rather than hotspot? Thanks again Voja.
