When I mentioned i was going to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil I was warned by so many people to avoid the favelas as they are very dangerous. Well we decided to go anyway to see how life is there in this misunderstood community, we were quite surprised. Welcome to Rio 🇧🇷

One thing people don't realize is that most people are very friendly and are intrigued by meeting new people, especially from around the world. If you're warm and welcome, most people will open up.

I love the favela Vidigal and genrally the art and the colors of Brasil. You have reactivated lost memories. People in Vidigal settled there more or less in the 1960s and 1970s, building their barracks and huts on terrains, that were not their property and defended themselves against being removed in the following decades. In 2015 the "unidade de policia pacificadora (UPP)" tried to fight criminalism ahead of the Summer Olympics in 2016. Since then Vidigal has become quite a tourist attraction.

What he failed to mention was, that going to the favela on your own is a very bad idea. Not all of them are as safe as Vidigal and you need to know what you are doing. Make sure you get a guide that can keep you out of trouble. Even Vidigal is not safe to enter on your own.

I always wanted to go to Brazil but hotels in Rio are so expensive, so last month I stayed at a pousada in a favela. It was close enough to the beach and the view from the balcony was better than any you'd get from a hotel by the beach.

@@yurippp634 I stayed at the pousada favela cantagalo, I was there alone, and I walked through after dark, I never felt like I wasn't safe there. Honestly I think Rio is safer than the states.

I went to vidigal too. we slept over there. and its so chill, literally normal people living there lives. but its a great experience!

You don't really even need a guide for Vidigal. Basically no more crime there than anywhere else in Rio. Got cracked down a few years back by the police and unlike other favelas this was successful. Become quite a popular place for tourists to stay now who want the "favela experience" - even though it's more of an aesthetic experience than an authentic one :)
