The fines for bringing in biosecurity risk items, like fruits, vegetables, meats and seeds, have now increased from $360 to $2,440 with discretionary powers to increase that amount up to $20,000 depending on the amounts and concealment. Tourist, temporary student and work visas can now also be cancelled if they bring in banned items.

It should be more strict then it was because after watching this show for many years now, SO many travelers bring prohibited items and then the worst part THEY DONT DECLARE THEY HAVE RESTRICTED GOODS! It’s okay to make a mistake, traveling is stressful but at least admit to your mistake. If they keep brining restricted items in then they most certainly deserve the punishment.

Thank goodness. Sounds like they finally got fed up with people bringing in stuff they shouldn't and that the smaller fines seem like a slap on the wrist. Glad they're so steep now. Wow about visas being canceled for bringing in prohibited items.

No, I hide my cash and credit cards in different places on my body or baggage. Because of thieves or pickpockets. If they steal what is in my purse than I still have some cash or credit cards elsewhere. I didn’t do that in Paris when I was alone: the gypsies of the metro left me with no cash, no credit cards, nothing! One month after in London I separated all my belongings and saved myself! But of course, I don’t carry more than 10’000 dollars or euros, but a legal amount.

For a moment I thought when she took a sip from the bottle of water, I thought it was a drug that was affecting her. I was so afraid for her. I watched a similar thing happen to a young 16 year old kid crossing from Mexico to US and the border patrol officer made him take a sip of the liquid containing fentanyl. And even when he started getting sick within 10 minutes, she never called an ambulance to help him. And then they end up finding out that his parents were being held hostage till he delivered the drugs across the boarder.

The criminals are terrible and the police have about had the s**** of it. The cops are getting worse because they're tired of dealing with the b.s. from criminals getting away with everything which makes the cops worse. I'm not saying cops are perfect but you try dealing with everyone they come in contact with is a Di-ck to them everyday.

@@virginia2949 I can't say about now, but 30 years ago when I ticked 'No', I was missing context. When I saw 'food' I had to think what this means. I've traveled to SEA countries before and were familiar with the cash limit, weapons, etc. and why. So I thought it was referring to fresh food and not shelf-stable products. I thought, maybe they're concerned about cleanliness. That first trip in, I brought a few packs of instant noodles and boy, did I got in trouble. Instant noodles weren't allowed 30 years ago because they contain egg. Nowadays with Internet, it was relatively easier to search information on this and you can use Google Translate. Smart Traveller website is always a wealth of information. Department of Agriculture website was extremely helpful navigating on what's allowed and what's not coming back into Australia. However I'm acknowledging that Internet access are not yet universal and some travelers do travel 'adventurously'.

Make the minimum fine more like AUD36,000. $3600 is a pittance for many of them and pocket change so they will keep paying the fines b/c even $3600 is cheap to them. Have to start making examples so news gets around Asia that Australia is not soft on crime.

@Raylzway I condemn this act of bringing prohibited items but in my opinion the fines are not less. They are less for Australians maybe but for people from south Asia, south American, or Africa, $360 can worth as much as monthly salary of average person there. All because good AUD value worldwide. 😊

@@shanessy888 i think it is because you can live and earn in Australia. The fines for these visitors are less because they are mostly tourists or relatives of someone living here and live for very short term in Australia. They cannot earn in Australia and they come with very limited money ($4000-$5000). So $400 is almost 15% of their total budget of stay.
