Ahh, yes. A person of culture, quoting the great Rich Evans of Red Letter Media. A tip of my hat to you! I’m only aware of some of the Borland’s story, characters, etc. I played a few times and thought it was awesome. My kids loved this series. I always wanted to keep playing it but I didn’t make the time. Definitely get a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe on this but I’m fine with that as long as they don’t cram 70’s-80’s songs in completely ripping off James Gunn. The group of misfits on an adventure seems fun. I’ll allow it. Totally fine with Cate Blanchett in the movie. She can play basically any role at any age. I hope she does a good job with the character but I’m not so familiar with all of the characters. Kevin Hart…I’m fine with it but at the same time…why? The character seemed much larger in the game and I didn’t get the comedian vibe from him. Jack Black as Clap Trap is awesome. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but fanboys will nitpick. They’re going to screw a lot of it up for sure but as an outsider it won’t bother me so much. I’ve done my fair share of nitpicking comic book movies so it’s to be expected.

I figured it would have made more sense just to use that actor since his character is CGI. But I also like Jack Black and think he will do well. I’m not steeped in the games like so many fans so of course I’m okay with the casting. I’m part of the problem. Hope it turns out better than expected.

Roland in the games: one of the more straight-laced, quiet, and serious characters Roland in this: Roland is black, so who’s the biggest name black actor we can get? Kevin Hart, the loud, boisterous comedian? Great! Lilith in the games: socially awkward nerd who puts on a femme fatale persona to hide it. Clearly in her 20’s-30’s Lilith in this: Middle-aged Star Lord wannabe Tina in the games: absolutely insane. Obsessed with sexy ladies and explosions, captures the man who killed her parents then forces him to participate in a tea party while electrocuting him to death. Tina in this: generic preteen girl archetype as seen in every other movie. Claptrap in the games: Silly but annoying robot buddy on the surface, but is desperately lonely because of how obnoxious others find him and also has a slightly concerning sadistic streak. Claptrap in this: Jack Black shitting himself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack Black and the writing is a separate issue, but there are a million other roles in the BL franchise that Jack Black would be better suited for, and Claptrap’s voice is perhaps the single most iconic of any characters. Why not hire the original voice actor, or at least a decent impression? They really pulled a Hollywood on this one. It feels like no one on the production staff has interacted with Borderlands beyond skimming the wiki. The casting clearly prioritizes name recognition over having actors who fit the roles they’re in. All personality has been sanded down to a generic Guardians of the Galaxy knock-off with none of the charm of Guardians or the source material.

Now. Now is the right time, because this entire thing is awful on so many levels it's ridiculous. Kevin Hart is too small, too happy/friendly, and too emotive in general too be Roland (who in canon is stoic, and is one of the best straight men to the hijinks of everyone else). Cate Blanchet is about 30 years too old for Lilith, and nowhere near emotive enough based on the trailer (as Lilith in canon is a hot-head, and a loose cannon). No Mordecai or Brick (which is a horrible decision), both Tannis and Moxxi look like they need a nursing home, not to go on an adventure. Having Krieg be in the film at all is a bad idea, never mind as a main character. About the only semi-decent casting is Jack Black as Claptrap, because he's able to walk that line of cringe-but-funny and cringe-trying-to-be-funny-so-hard-it-becomes-cringe-funny. I think he'll be the only good part of this movie, or at least the only non-sludge part of it. Tiny Tina? Shouldn't be there until either the sequel, or the TV series between games, because it's only due to Handsome Jack that she's an orphan at all. Jack only rose to power after the first vault was opened, well after Roland and Lilith became a team with Brick and Mordecai. On a side note, I did love the sets, the bad guys, vehicles, weapons, and definitely loved the creatures (Rakk, Skags, and Sandworm in particular). So there is a chance it *could* be made a good live-action movie... Just recast the entire main cast, rewrite the script from the bottom up, and keep the set designers, and everyone working in the background who makes this trailer look even vaguely Borderlands. You know. Little things.
