Increased automation in the cockpit leads to distraction, causing the pilots of a Delta Air Lines (ex Northwest Airlines) Airbus A320 flight from San Diego to Minneapolis to fly 150 miles past their destination.

As a private pilot with lots of hours I know a couple of things: First, I get nervous if I don’t hear any chatter on the radio after 10 minutes, let alone 90 minutes. Second, you Are usually given a change in frequencies about every 15 minutes. So not being asked to switch after an hour, any pilot would be instinctively suspicious. Couldn’t be conscious and doing your job without feeling that way. They fell asleep, no question in my mind, there’s no other possible alternative.

@@nameunknown007 That is speculated as the reason they over flew Minneapolis by 150 miles, so that by the time they were coming back in, only the last 30 minutes of the CVR would be available- which would be the circling back in to land, not the “oh shit! wake up!” part of the audio.

While I’m not disagreeing with you, for the sake of argument late at night over less busy parts of the western US on some sectors it’s coming to go quite a while without hearing ATC or another aircraft. Even longer once you start flying out over the ocean. We have all dropped a frequency at one time or another, sometimes our fault and sometimes the controller doesn’t give a handoff and we end up outside their VHF coverage. This is why it’s required to monitor 121.5 so these instances can be corrected. I can give them that much. The company send them a number of ACARS messages. While there is no aural alert for this, ‘company message’ is shown just below the engine indications in your normal scan. These are seldom missed, but again it’s possible. The real indicator that something was wrong was the mode reversion from Nav to Heading mode. This aural triple click and flight mode annunciator change should never be missed by either pilot. Any experienced Airbus pilot knows the FMA is the heart of what the aircraft is doing, which is why it is top and center on the primary flight display.
@areza15143
@areza15143 2 жыл бұрын
@@asa_______________commente4195 I think VHF range is another issue. If you don’t hear someone on frequency within half an hour, you’ve likely gone out of range of that transmitter. In my hundreds of hours of night cross country all on instrument flight plans, I would always get nervous if I hadn’t heard something in 15 - 20 minutes. I would call for a radio check.

Just imagine being a cockpit operator (cause that's what the so called "pilots" are today), there had absolutely nothing wrong happened even if indeed you were asleep for 1.5 hours and try to reflect on what you've replied. You'll have a very different thinking then...! They didn't do anything wrong at all. Nothing! They should indeed file a report and blah blah, but should never be fired as long as everything went OK. Pay for the delay and wasted gas, but hey..., they're not going to do it again without having someone to tell them so! Some "retards" cause I can't call them otherwise will say things like: "But what if the plane would go out of control while they are asleep and what if this and what if that and what if...," and what else their small brains might come up with! As long as you've done a mistake that didn't generate any bad effects, mostly you should have some sort of penalty that won't demoralize you and make you hate what you're doing, especially when you're otherwise doing it very well. Getting fired for stupid ideas of "what could've happened" is a very toxic mindset and people are not going to evolve the right way on this course!

@@joevignolor4u949 The Titanic Disaster was not really one of individual complacency, but of the complacency of the oceanliner industry in general. There had been very few famous cases of ocean liners being lost in the prior 20 years, certainly none due to ice, and so many largely considered them invincible or unsinkable in the open ocean. Maintaining schedules at all costs meant that most ships operated near their maximum speeds at all times, even in severe ice conditions. The importance of the telegraph and ensuring proper weather reporting was not a priority yet, most very large ships did not operate with enough lifeboats for all passengers, and crew requirements were not as strong as they should've been. Captain Smith did make the mistake of not heading the ice warnings and going into the ice field at full speed, but its nothing like the case above, where such practice is widly considered abnormal or wrong.

You’re a controller so no doubt you know exactly what you are talking about. Absolutely careless and reckless to the highest degree. I don’t even go out for a drive in my car if I’m really tired, I’d rather walk or use public transport which I’ve done in the past. And these guys just passed out for over 90 mins. I'm wondering why they didn't scramble fighter jets. Sometimes I've had the notion that this exercise was done to prove that fighter jets aren't routinely scrambled when something goes clearly dangerously wrong with a commercial airliner.
@xheralt
@xheralt 3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnRandomness105 Launching fighters is a last resort, not to be done lightly. There was enough uncertainty (them staying on heading could be attributed to inattentiveness) that they held off. Had the aircaft made an unannounced heading change of any sort, demonstrated any sort of intentions in that way, the birds would have been in the air immediately.
@JohnRandomness105

@@xheralt It seems to me that the nonresponse of the pilots and the inability to do anything else about them qualifies the last-resort action. The idea would be to intercept the plane. (Please don't confuse "intercept" with "shoot down" as certain people pretended in another, more infamous situation.)

@John Randomness The FAA didn't immediately contact NORAD when they lost radio contact with the flight. Losing radio contact with an aircraft is actually not uncommon, albeit for minutes, not hours. Controllers (and maybe pilots) even have a term for this, "NORDO." So initially, loss of radio contact was not particularly alarming. The delay in contacting NORAD was given as a contributing factor for not scrambling fighters earlier. The FAA subsequently changed its procedures for contacting NORAD to (iirc) 15 minutes after losing radio contact.

I flew with the CAP in Hawaii in the 1980s. We were up flying one night and heard on the radio ATC calling a flight from California. The flight answered with some nonsense. Then about 10 minutes later that California inbound requested a 360 from ATC. It turned out that the inbound flight was about 20 miles from Honolulu and still cruising at 35,000 feet. It took them quite a few 360s to get down to where they could land at Honolulu.

TheFlightChannel, love your videos... they're superb. Increased automation however didn't really play any part in this. Automation has been flying these aircraft at the flight levels for decades. It was a total disregard to monitoring the aircraft by the pilots. After 10mins of being on ATC with Center and if you're not hearing radio chatter you should check your radios. It's absurd to go that long without checking their course, radios, or instruments. Side note: It looks like the Captain was the one who should have been the one to have "flown...better".... hahah

It is hard to stomach the fact that once we board an airplane and it is up in the air, our lives literally depend on a few strangers in the cockpit - people whom we do not know and never met.
