Some of the annoying islanders in the comments don't seem to realize you can be ethnically Puerto Rican and be something else nationally. a Chinese person born in America is still ethnically Chinese. a Haitian person born in France is still Haitian. a Korean person born in Japan is still ethnically Korean. Just because their ethnicity and nationality don't match up doesn't make them any less of what they ethnically are. I'm Puerto Rican AND American. I’m fourth generation born and raised in Hawaiʻi. Great Grandma was brought to work on the plantations. Due to the plantation life Puerto Rican food had adapted to availability and was also influenced by other cultures. So sometimes Puerto Ricans are judged here for having small differences in our food. My heart cries at how much language and traditions have been lost some due to past generations feeling the need to adapt and/or the intertwining of cultures here (though beautiful). We still have a thriving Puerto Rican community here. Although mixed I still feel my ancestors in bones, I still mourn my elders who have passed and the love they showed us of our culture. I hope one day to go to the island and bring as much generations with me as I can. @perolike I hope one day you could shed light on the stories and history of Puerto Ricans here in Hawaiʻi. We have heritage groups, restaurants, events and so much more. Hawaiʻi being such a melting pot there is always bound to be at least one Puerto Rican dish at the potluck and you can buy pastele on the side of the road almost anywhere and any day of the week which is a unique thing that evolved here.

I was 15 years old when I first went to Puerto Rico. Before we went, my parents prepared us. We knew the news, the concerns on the island, what they were going through, and of course, we spoke fluent Spanish. Anyway, we arrive, and my cousins say, "Oh ustedes son de aya fuera." Then we start talking Spanish to them. Fluent Spanish, and they were shocked. "Considerando que ustedes son de aya fuera, hablan muy bien el espanol." My siblings and I looked at each other, then we told them, "Hablamos el espanol en la casa, y el Ingles fuera de la casa." They were also surprised that we knew about what was happening in the island, the concerns of the people living there. They gained a new respect for us as their family. It's not enough to just know the music and dancing. We have to know the history. We have to understand the concerns of the island and what they are feeling. That's where the disconnect is experienced. hey want us who are born in the states to know that contrary to popular belief, there are Puerto Ricans who are in C-Suite, who are astronauts and scientists, who are professionals. They want us to know that they are contributors to the Mainland, as well. Their men and women fought wars for this country. Once our cousins knew that we knew what they were feeling, everything was wonderful! We also told them about what was happening with Mainland Puerto Ricans. We found out that we had many of the same concerns. Of course, in between conversations, we had asopao, sanchoco, pasteles, alcapurrias, bacalaitos, limber, helados, quenepas, panapen con bacalao frito y cebollitas! lol! Y Mavi!

My family does this too! They all talk to me in English, when I can speak Spanish, and I was like wtf? I kept responding in Spanish and made a point to remind my cousins that I'm Puerto Rican even if I don't live on the island. :) Don't forget we have Boricuas who are politicians like AOC or in the Supreme Court like Sotomayor. So we're everywhere. Being born on the island or in NYC doesn't change the fact of who we are.

Awesome!! I was born in New York but I was raised in the South and also went to Puerto Rico four times in my life and I live there for a little time but every time I went back it was always a new generation and the culture was also changing only with the youth ; which also led up with me getting into fights with Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico versus me from New York because they looked at us as nuyoric ans stuck-up and some may look at the ones🇵🇷 in the islands to snobby so it's all fun with me let the games begin boricua power!!!

I've seen some really harsh criticisms of Puerto Ricans here in the mainland that may not have learned Spanish in their respective households. While I think it should definitely be encouraged to further understand the history of our people, reprimanding people for not knowing what seemingly everyone else knows won't incentivize that person to learn more, but oftentimes the inverse. Granted, we're an incredibly prideful group of people, and said pride can certainly get the best of us, we always manage to stand tall, despite what's been thrown our way. ¡Viva nuestra gente!🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

This is one of those videos I wish I had 15 years ago but I'm glad I have it now. I never feel Puerto Rican enough, and the few times I try to partake in our thing, within the family especially, it's treated like watching a dog walking on its hind legs and reciting Chaucer lol

Me as a puertorican born and raised in the island, idc if you were born in Pakistan from puertorican parents, if you consider yourself puertorican and is proud of it, you definitely qualify as one because of the love. There’s a saying we say on the island: “Más puertorriqueños son los q se crian en otra parte del mundo, por tan solo amar sus raíces y ser orgullosos de donde viene su ADN” Mire unity, less division. Eres Puertorriqueño aunque naciste en la luna 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

You know, I typically "WOO!" or something every time I see a flag or someone mentions Puerto Rico (you know, because 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷), but I had a hard time keeping up with that habit in this video because of how many times y'all said PR and I am so 100% here for more PR content, y'all. ❤️🇵🇷❤️🇵🇷❤️

Ive gotten this a lot. Especially when it comes to me talking about the food i grew up with. What I call pastellios, I had a puerto rican from the island get aggressive with me amd say theyre called empanadillas. Theres like an unspoken disdain for puerto ricans who live on the mainland from my experience

Saludos my name is Nico. My mom is white and my dad is Puerto Rican so I’m half and half but I’ve always been super proud to be Boricua (as we always are jaja). And I didn’t care that my skin was lighter than my fathers I still always reminded people “my name is Nicolás Santana and I am Puerto Rican!” Lmao. But all my life I’ve had to fight to prove my latinidad with other Latinos because of not being “dark enough” and I’ve heard this videos topic my whole life as well. “You’re not really Puerto Rican though because you grew up on the mainland.” Luckily my family on the island never believed that but other island native Puerto Rican’s have always treated me differently for it. And the worst was the Dominicans in college who would treat me differently for it. I always say though that DNA is stronger than Nationality! You can be born anywhere by coincidence but that doesn’t make you apart of that culture necessarily. Your blood/dna is what you are. I’ve done my ancestry and I am Puerto Rican I have Taino blood running through these veins haha. So I really appreciate this video guys, short but sweet. ❤️

I believe we should be united, but I cannot denied that our upbringing is very different. We are different, nothing wrong with that but we can see the difference between the language, type of music we do know are not the same. I have know New Ricans that do not know what is plena, and I am in shock, but at the same time those are the same people that feel so proud the wear the bandera regardless if they have been to the island or not.

I was born in puerto rico but my family moved to florida when i was 2. I cant control that. Yet I always get judged for not being a “real puertorican” I always get judged for having a slight accent when speaking Spanish, but I can still speak it perfectly and understand it all. So unfortunately I dont speak it unless its with family because of the criticism I receive constantly. Its so frustrating to live this way because its not my fault my parents moved🤷🏻♀️

I get this same thing from other Jamaicans. I was born in the US (1st generation) but I was raised Jamaican. It definitely hurts when it feels like someone is trying to strip you of your culture that you're so proud to be a part of. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

My real name is José Luis Meléndez and I was born in Puerto Rico but then I moved to Oregon with my mom when I was 2. I got americanized like Eli so when I visit my family in PR it’s hard to feel like i’m really one of them. It’s cool to see both perspectives in this video tho.

🇵🇷 She often talks about the way her culture plays a part in her holiday celebrations. She loves Puerto Rican food, speaks Spanish and riced the Super Bowl with that Puerto Rican flag jacket. Even if she’s not your favorite, you gotta admit that she’s a very proud Puerto Rican. 💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿🇵🇷
