Fred the Swede used to be in Alex Horne's band, the Horne Section, and made several appearances in the early series of Taskmaster before moving back to Sweden. He made a remote appearance in the 13th.

In the Swedish version of Taskmaster they have conversations with an Icelandic person and it's hilarious 😅

Spoken Icelandic is almost impossible for a Swede, despite the written language being fairly understandable. It doesn't help that the few words that could be understood are not the important ones.

As a Swede this is one of my favourite tasks. Joe Wilkinson is fantastic Edit: Jodi is wrong about Danish being closer to german. Danish, Norwegian and Swedish belong to the same language group and are quite similar. I as a Swede can generally understand a Norwegian if they don't speak to fast and a Dane if they make an effort to enunciate.

Interesting. I’m English and have always assumed that Scandinavian people could understand each other, providing that conversation wasn’t too fast. I assume there is some German influence in the Danish language, due to geography and history. Can you understand the other Nordic languages like Finnish and Estonian?

Danish and Swedish are very similar because they come from the same language, so the basic vocabulary is almost 90% identical, which is why failure/to fail sounds the same: "at misslyckas" in Swedish vs "at mislykkes" in Danish, but very specific words are completely different, like hamburger "pannbiff" in Swedish, "burger" in Danish, and lingonberry "lingon" in Swedish, "tyttebær" in Danish. ps. As a Danish person with not much interaction with Swedish people, I had to look up what hamburger was called, so I understand why Sofie was also confused.
@HenrikJansson78
@HenrikJansson78 5 ай бұрын
"Pannbiff" is not hamburger, that translation was a bit off. Hamburger is "hamburgare", so not that difficult. :) "Pannbiff" is something like meatloaf. At least they look similar.

@@HenrikJansson78 Yeah, that also confused me a bit because I was pretty sure I'd heard 'hamburgare' before and wondered why it sounded like it was plural but then went on find out that a lot of Swedish nouns are like that. But I heard him saying something different than that, so I had to look it up. After having looked it up, I think the confusion stems from the fact that Americans refer to the beef patty (pannbiff) as 'hamburger' while the UK and we refer to the whole thing with buns and everything as the hamburger. In Danish, 'pannbiff' would be 'hakkebøf' because it's made of chopped-up meat, while, presumably, the Swedish name refers to it being formed into a solid mass by being cooked in a pan.

@@toringepedersen9614 Yes. But there was a text in the video that said Hamburgers. He/they were also a bit lenient on the answer there, "ground beef" is a very broad statement, a hamburger is very different from a meatloaf. But I guess it would be too tricky to get it exactly right. :)

Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are mutually intelligible with very little practice, with most of the vocabulary being extremely similar. The Germanic (which is not the same as German) language tree can be divided into two branches. The northern branch which includes: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic and Faroese. These developed from old Norse. The western branch which includes: German, Dutch, Frisian, Scots and English. There was an eastern branch but those languages died out hundreds of years ago. The speakers of the Scandinavian languages (SE, NO, DK) can understand one another to a degree. How well depends on the dialects spoken etc but Swedes and Danes I'd say in general struggle the most understanding one another. Personally (I'm Swedish) I quite often switch to English when speaking to Danes but it depends. When I've reached my third "what/sorry" I just give up and switch. xD EDIT: Swedish has more German influence than either Danish or Norwegian because of historical reasons. This is mainly related to the vocabulary. Despite that the Scandinavian languages are still very similar and quite different from German both in regards of the vocabulary but even more so grammatically.

Yes, about the German influences in Swedish. One easy example is the word window, which origins from old Norse. It's still to this day something like vindu in Danish and Norwegian, and it was vindöga very long ago in Swedish, but since the last couple of centuries we say fönster. The German word is fenster.

Joe is always in a suit - that looks like it was given to him by a hostel - it's very much part of his act . He's never as daft as he make out .The mix of contestants is one of Taskmasters big strengths. The Swedish chap and his friends do pop up in other tasks and several other Countries produce their own versions of the show . Taskmaster full shows have been a problem with copyright for other reactors so you are probably better with full individual tasks .The book might give you a framework and rules to work to , but it's not essential . I always enjoy your enthusiasm for our shows as they are new to you .

Please do reconsider reacting to full seasons of taskmaster, even if it means splitting the episodes into multiple parts. There are KZbinrs that are able to consistently post Taskmaster reactions so there must be a way past the copyright. Whilst it's not completely the same, Taskmaster is a lot more like a sitcom than you realise, with each cast of 5 staying for the whole season, and so dipping in and out to random tasks just doesn't feel like the best way to experience the show, much like a sitcom. Also please bear in mind that the only reason I'm leaving comments like this is because I enjoy watching your reactions, if I didn't like your videos I wouldn't care in the first place! So I hope you don't think comments like this are being negative.

there was a bit of an argument about using the phone in these very early seasons. I think now it is mostly frowned upon, unless it's very funny. Also this was 2016 so things like google lens and auto translating weren't really a thing yet. But it felt already rather cheaty and controversial at the time.

Part of the show is to find loopholes. If its not forbidden in the text they read before the task it is allowed. Nowdays maybe they would forbid it though (-meaning write that its forbiden in the text about the task-) as too many people would think of using the phone as they’ve seen others do it over the years.

Nick always seems to get caught up on whether something is fair or not lol Half the fun of the show is seeing the contestants subvert expectations and find loop-holes in the "rules". They're not really competing, at least not for anything but personal pride. It's all about being funny. I think this is another one of those differences between UK and US comedic sensibilities. It's also probably why the US version of Taskmaster failed, because they prioritised winning over the comedy and that's not what this show is supposed to be about. Stephen Fry said something really interesting about the difference between American and British humor in an interview once, comparing the two. He pointed out that in British humor the underdog is the star, we enjoy the hapless failure, the striving against the odds, we love when the incompetent person beats the system. In comparison, American humor is generally all about being right, being the best, being the hero. It might be as simple as the difference between punching down and punching up.
