The new prime minister is making a Commons statement, after holding his first Cabinet meeting.
Speaking to MPs, Boris Johnson said his government would throw itself into Brexit negotiations with energy.
He said other arrangements for the Northern Ireland backstop were "perfectly compatible with the Belfast Agreement to which we are, of course, steadfastly committed".
He said Michael Gove would make plans for a no-deal Brexit a "top priority".
He also assured EU citizens they would have "absolute certainty" of their right to live in the UK.
On Thursday, he addressed his cabinet for the first time as prime minister.

@@Alan_Mac You seem to have forgotten what the actual purpose of a debate is. You are supposed to find common ground and come to an agreement during a debate, which means you have to LISTEN and to let the other person finish his/her statement, rather than interrupt. I suppose a debate in the House of Commons is more "entertaining" for people who like to see some "action", but I hope you agree with me that it is less constructive. What you call "engaging with the political process", I think is actually OBSTRUCTING the democratic decision making process.
@Alan_Mac
@Alan_Mac 5 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenRonteltap " You are supposed to find common ground and come to an agreement during a debate,"? No you are not. What you're describing is dialectic, not debate. Dialectic is all about consensus and debate is all about exposing - indeed ridiculing - fallacies and inaccuracies. The House of Commons is all about debate - indeed the chamber was deliberately made smaller than practicable to ensure a febrile atmosphere and that's why it's the leading debating chamber in world politics. If you want to play consensus politics with your nice, set-piece little dialectic niceties then that's fine. Please, though, don't regard that as in anyway normative.

@Absolutely Fabulous I don't doubt that the UK will thrive after leaving the EU, the issue is at what cost. The NHS will be the first to go because the Americans are already doing everything in their power to privatise it. We'll loose all the good EU regulations (like the ones on food quality) which have been keeping us much safer than other countries. This will be followed by decades of economic instability with London losing its place as a financial capital. Once all that has blown over, I see the UK making a comeback and becoming an equal to America, possibly overshadowing it.

@Joe Bloggs. Just because he went to Oxford doesn't mean he'll make a good PM. I myself went to Oxford and have a Masters in Marketing & Business Management. Doesn't mean that I would make a good PM.
