9 жыл бұрын

Fifty years after Churchill’s death, the leader’s actions continue to shape the world. In his survey of this multi-talented politician, military strategist, and writer, Johnson, the mayor of London since 2008 and himself a former journalist and author of the inimitable Johnson’s Life of London, argues that history can be made by strong individuals not impersonal forces.
Founded by Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade in 1984, Politics & Prose Bookstore is Washington, D.C.'s premier independent bookstore and cultural hub, a gathering place for people interested in reading and discussing books. Politics & Prose offers superior service, unusual book choices, and a haven for book lovers in the store and online. Visit them on the web at www.politics-prose.com/

Boris is now PM and if he carries on the way he started. He is on line to be one of the best prime minister's the Britain has ever produced. Churchill may have won the Battle of Britain Boris Johnson has won the battle for Britain in Brexit. The British under Boris Johnson I've got that country back after the sovereignty of Britain I've been surrendered by politicians to the EU super state without a shot fired. He is on course to make history. Well done Sir.

Boris old boy, you forgot the incident when Winston went into the men's room and placed himself at the other end of the stalls from Clem Attlee, the socialist leader. "Being standoffish today are we Winston?", asked Attlee. "Its not that Clem", replied Churchill, "it's just that whenever you see anything big you want to nationalize it!"

Derek in Sydney Yes, possibly THE most important sentence, especially in the current situation we are now in. I would place my whole entire trust in him if he overturned the 1973 Heath act, that would take us out of ALL treaties signed without the knowledge nor approval of The British citizens. LEAVE the Brussels unelected bureaucrats and all their pathetic laws, dictatorship and evil intentions of forcing us into the Globalists agenda/NWO. The EU Parliament will, hopefully crumble and fall before so very long freeing Each and Every European country, allowing them to regain their Sovereignty, Laws, Rights, Nationalism, cultures and differences that we have all embraced in days gone by. Everything should be sold off and the proceeds returned, and rightly so, to all the individual countries, whose taxes have been stolen/ given by former corrupt leaders, thus enabling ALL European countries to re-form and grow from strength to strength! Long Live Freedom, Nationalism and Cultural restoration. No I am not racist for stating my opinions and beliefs!

Very good to hear Boris in full flow in his natural element. He displays such genuine enthusiasm, born of conviction . He is actually far more serious than many people realize...his jokes are peripheral and a way of engaging the audience with serious matters, & history. What a profound contrast to Mrs May! We have had a dearth of intellect, a desert lacking in ideas & imagination . I hope so much he will survive the current attack dogs, and become PM. Of course he will err as all human do. But he has potential to succeed where many humans couldn’t.

Excellent lecture from a guy who is fluent in French, Italian and Latin; together with excellent German and Spanish. It is exceedingly rare that he needs an interpreter with him when in the corridors of Brussels or its different summit meetings. I met people who said that whilst they did not have internal democracy of the overarching nature that had long existed in the UK, they felt strongly, entirely and impregnably protected by the democratic Parliament of the UK, because they had seen throughout history that democratic governments, particularly the UK Parliament, had never produced cause to fear oppression or abuse. True, it's a shame that he didn't stay in this lane. He's an academic, he's charismatic and he is quite orator. I like him, I wouldn't want him running my country because he's an inveterate liar and cheat, but as a communicator, he's terrific. That, and his nasty limerick about Erdogan hit the nail on the head.

Here's the thing whether or not you like what he's saying, when he speaks you listen. I personally love watching him speak and practically drawn in even if I find the subject matter maybe a little complicated for my little brain to absorb. Btw that last woman with the question re Hong Kong was rather rude saying "No comment" after Boris gave a reasonable response to her question.

I despise his class. I despise his politics, but I admire this man's style of delivery beyond measure. I honestly think that his sincere stream of consciousness is unparalleled in modern oratory. Perhaps much of this in the lecture theatre, but none at all in the voice of mainstream politics. A leader, regardless of conviction, is an asset.

Worst priminister at the worst time, looked at all the comments on hear and this is the same opinion they had running up to the election, mainly they thought he was funny and voted for him just for that reason. well I tell you something the majority of people in England dont think he is funny now, Brexit has been a total disaster, and the way he has dealt with covid has been a total disaster, worst mortality rate in Europe because of his incompetence because of his lack of common sence and not taking the advice of top medical professionals and his reluctance to shut the borders etc. Economy in tatters can never make a sensible decision u turns every five minutes, the list goes on and on. constantly lies in parliament, even when these lies are pointed out to him he will not admit to it. I think Churchill would be turning in his grave if he thought this Charleston was aligning himself to him !!

Churchill did two great things. In 1940-41 he saved Britain and the World. In 1951 he took the Tory party back into office and ended the Socialist state imposed by Atlee, Nye Bevan and Harold Wilson. By 1940 aged 66 he had acquired a lot of experience about war and politics. And have failed as Chancellor in the depression , he had a nine year sabbatical eating, drinking, reading and writing for the Press to think about it. As essentially unpaid backbencher he described himself as a journalist and had a lifelong interest in a free media. Within days of coming to power in May 1940, he found the Nazi army and SS on the banks of the Meuse, under the apparent command of General Guderain, his troop singing, ' we are sailing ( for England) . Winston asked his RAF Air Marshall's, ' can you provide some old obsolete planes, to expend. A 100 Battle fighter bombers, only 250 k. Right I order them to take out the house out that is Guderain's HQ on the east side of the Meuse, in the great tradition of the RAF and RN Capt of HMS Glowworm defending HMS Glorious from the Scharnhorst , they will take the German army and SS HQ by flying straight into. 20 RAF Battles went a straight into Guderain HQ, but it was actually next door, and Sailor was only shaken for a day. Rommel had taken the bridge . Churchill repeated the ordered in triplicate , if you find out were Rommel, Guderain or Heydrich's are , a 100 airborne immediately
