Every August in a secret location in America, a group of extraordinary children and their families gather for what might be the world’s most unusual summer camp: a four day break for girls who were born boys.
With exclusive access to the world’s first camp for transgender kids as young as five, we meet astonishing children in the one place they can share their secret. The camp allows girls who were born as boys to undergo makeovers and take part in fashion shows. If you come to school with pink things and painted nails you get a lot of hate (like she said) and they don't accept you, it's a fact and you have to fight every day. Thats how children see things eventually they will grow out of it but at this age they are just doing what the society deems normal for boys and what's normal for girls. I'm sure every adult has a story about doing something as a kid because that was what was normal for little girls or boys.

okay, 1. it actually CAN be one of the first indicators, because as children, thats one of the first things they can immediately go to to express themselves as girls. when your small, your not thinking about the mindsets between the genders, your thinking about societies views on the genders. its much easier for a child to say "mom, im a girl, i want to wear pink and sparkles" then it is to say "mom, ive been thinking for a long time, and ive come to realize that how i like to behave and be seen is what other girls like to do, so im a girl" not saying every kid who likes pink is a girl, im saying its very easy from a young age to say "blue is for boys, pink is for girls" and be attracted to the one you identify as. 2......who mentioned sexuality? this is a docu on gender.

The only thing I don't care much for in this documentary is the parent who said his son always liked the color pink was an indication their son identitified as a girl. I only said son because at the time the parent spoke of the child was being identified as a boy. I don't think allowing your kid to be transgender is bad but it doesn't have anything to do with liking the color pink. I have a cousin who loved the color pink and carried a pink purse for along time but he grew up all boy. My brother liked finger nail polish and high heels and finger nail polish. My sisters and I dressed him in dresses and we wore my mom's heels. He loved it. He grew up to be gay but you wouldn't just know he was gay if he didn't tell me you. I just know that 2 year olds like what they like. If you genuinely believe your 2 year old is transgendered that's great but there are very abusive people out there and if someone's bigot daddy thinks their little boy is anything but a real boy who knows what could happen.

There are different criteria for diagnosing gender dysphoria in kids one of which is strongly preferring toys and clothes for the opposite gender but that is just one there needs to be others including body dysphoria and social dysphoria so a little boy liking pink and princesses could be a sign, but doesn’t mean that all boys who like feminine things are trans. Or girls who like masculine things. a lot of kids are like that. It doesn’t mean their trans. I hope that makes sense.

(regarding is just being a MTF camp) plus they get to have the somewhat normal childhood experience of having a kind of 'all girls club'. and relate to eachother JUST as transgirls without throwing in the mix of FTM kids as well. i can understand why the camp is geared specifically toward one thing. it'd be great if there was another camp for FTM kids and a camp for both for people who want to mingle with all but for young children especially it gives them the ability to have these cool little formative experiences of being a girl with their own little 'clique' of other girls who all are going thru the same thing as transgirls. i think its GREAT!

They just don't follow the same system society would want them to conform too. I love what Russel brand says so often not nessaceraliy about this particular topic but he says "What is normal anyways? there is no normal everything we live by is a construct built by man who's to say what normal is... or was?" , unless that man made construct suddenly disappeared and there was no pre-formed cultural, societable views there is no such thing as normal. To be honest I find them admirable because they are living the life they choose unashamedly I wish I had the guts and resiliency they have to live their happiness and to be who they want to be not whom society would have them conform to be. I do take issue with how the doc approached this at times- these kids are not “boys longing to be girls”- they are girls. They may be trans, they may have been assigned male at birth due to their bodies, but they are not boys. They are girls. For a documentary about trans children, I would expect them to be treated as such.

I agree. This is an incredible documentary and I fill support this. But some boys do like pink and not to sound stereotypical but a lot of these girls run and scream like boys. Playing with frogs etc … again not to sound stereotypical but most girls I know aren’t into this kind of thing. I think you have to be very careful as a parent not to rush this process too hard although I think all of these parents are incredible 🙏🏻

I have alot of friends both male, female, non binary etc and yeh there are some suddle differences and it's mainly social norms that's goes into play. These parents aren't forcing their child to do anything they're simply giving them the option and being really accepting about it. If they were brainwashing than they'd do it to all of their kids. *What about brainwashing kids to be straight? Or to be non trans? I can't help wonder how many of these children would feel if they were allowed to express and explore freely from birth, without any colors, outfits, or toys being gender specific. Yes no hate at all but it’s not about liking pink or something for trans girls, they are actually born with a brain that closer resembles a female brain then a male brain, this is where the intense anxiety comes from, so yes I agree it would be better to just let kids do what they want but it’s not going to chance the anxiety that they feel, that can only be stopped by transitioning - sincerely a trans guy 💛

There's a great brit doc about a guy the uses a grade school class as a lab to challenge these exact notions. Very eye opening. He had the teacher stop using gender specific pet names for the kids, mixed up the playground time, things like that. Had a few parents remove all gender specific crap from their kids rooms. He really shined a light on how much adults unknowingly shove gender down kids throats. Birthdays for example. When u r going to attend the birthday of a kid, what do u buy them? 9 times out of 10 we all buy gender specific stuff. He provided toys that were gender opposite to the kids like a robot building kit for girls & stitch craft for the boy's & the kids really loved it. The biggest eye opener to me were the scientific facts that show how we damage our kids with this crap. As adults, females tend to have poor spacial awareness due to the toys & play that r available to us compared to what little boys play with. Things like Lego help boys brains develope better n this area but dolls & beauty crap don't let girl brains learn this as well. There's a great deal fewer engineering women than men becuz of it. The boys grow up with much less ability to express & cope with emotions due to the gender attitude that adult press on us, especially n the UK. I highly recommend that doc.

The things that I don't like about this videos are the fact that they further isolate the person and have them as a gender. They keep referring to the children as "transgender kids" instead of saying "children who identify as/are transgender". Gender doesn't define a person. It would also have been informative and interested if they included children who did have problems fitting in physically due to not easily adjusting into who they were meant to always be because their biological gender being physically prominent. The children in this documentary are all "unisex" kids that probably wouldn't be bullied over their physical appearance because they blend in "perfectly" to an assigned gender. I would have also liked to have seen children who have gone or were going through puberty who have either transitioned or were currently transitioned. I didn't like the ideologies stereotypes, limitations and generalizations and definitions of femininity and masculinity being taught to the children. They should be taught that they don't have to conform and to assign themselves gender roles. Girls don't have to wear dresses, makeup, and do arts and crafts. Girls can can canoe fish fix cars, anything etc... boys can wear dresses makeup dance do nails hair etc...

As a mother of a trans man (ftm), he is about to be 21 years old... I know everything these families have gone through. 19ish years ago when we knew he was different, there wasn’t a lot of support. Good on these families for coming together and creating a beautiful thing for their children. We've always accepted our son, no matter what, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart knowing everything you'll be up against for many years. At this point, what he does is now his decisions... all we can do is be supportive as we always have... if you think or know your child is trans, PLEASE support them.. it is not a phase. It doesn't go away. If you know and accept that going in, you'll be a much better parent for it. And they'll not feel so alone in the world.

I think the camp is a wonderful idea. My son's friend suffered being born in the wrong body but unfortunately didn't have the support from family. He had to wait until age 18 to begin transition. She is now a beautiful young lady who worked so hard to pay for blockers etc. I excepted her the moment I met her. It's like she is my daughter. I am so proud of the person she has become.

My heart always pours out for these kids and their parents! And it irritates me so much when people speak out against them or try to restrict what they can do without even a basic understanding of what they go through. I hope very much that they will continue to shine and live long beautiful lives. The friendships that can be made at events like this can be so important to both the children and the parents. (The pink fog (that's what my friends call it) that can occur after these events can be so hard to deal with for a while, particularly for kids who are not out in their everyday lives. I'm surprised you did not cover it.) I do appreciate the post story of Maxi coming out. I may have missed something, but it appears that she was living stealth prior and was just revealing her story to address the rumors about her. (Puberty can be so rough that way.) Regardless of her status with the school, it can be so hard when dealing with transition and schools. Thank you for making and sharing this. I only hope that people can learn from it and gain better understanding of all the issues involved.

Parents are allowed to refer to thier child's past before the transition.. Especially when they are being so supportive of their children. Parents have ever right to grieve the loss of "Connor" when she became '"Linzey"- and referring to her in the past, by her past name isn't disrespectful. It's said like that because they don't decide to be a different gender, their brains and their whole character is of the opposite gender their body is reflecting. So Kris wasn't born a girl, Kris always was a boy, but born with a female body. If transgender talk about themselves, they normally use their current pronouns, so if someone says he is a boy, he is f2m, but if someone says she is a girl, she is m2f. No one wants to see a child suffer or struggle so. I believe that most people who oppose it do so in spite of the compelling pleas of the children, and definitely have compassion for the children, as well as for the parents who are not prodding encouraging this,. But to answer your question - -We are seeing a real explosion of de-transitioners whose bodies are permanently altered / damaged with irreversible changes. So many say that they changed their minds, that transitioning did not ultimately fix their underlying problems of the gender dysphoria, and they are devastated w regret over what they had done to their bodies (or what their parents' allowed). (balding young women with men's voices, etc.) I also heard that these children have a difficult time with finding partners when they get older. (whatever that all means outside of a sacramental marriage?) . A growing number I see telling of the organ / system damage that the hormones are causing, and there is ruined fertility, There is also the issue of faith, which should, in no way, be u ermined or diminished many have abandoned the faith or have done so to the point of writing their own terms. Parents will have to answer to God for this. His will, not ours. We don't have the option of changing His order.

I agree with most of the comments saying that you can’t just assume a boy wants to be transgender because they like pink and sparkles. I am not denying that any of these children are forced to be trans but it should be ok for boys to like “girly colors”

The narrator and the overall attitude I’m this documentary is a bit...dated? These aren’t boys wanting to be girls. These are girls who were assigned boys at birth due to their genitals. The families were sweet, but I can’t shake the sideshow feel of documentaries like these. I’ve only seen a handful of good ones.

Keira yeah that families still seemed really stuck on the “traditional gender binary” that pink, sparkles, lipstick and princesses are for girls and blue, superheroes and trucks are for boys. Men and women can be a mix of masculine and feminine. I worry these kids feel like they can’t like something that’s “for boys” because then their parents won’t believe they are actually trans anymore

I am 62, married and had several children. LOVE being married, LOVE being pregnant, having my babies....LOVE being a female.... (would never want to be a guy) I AM VERY MUCH female....BUT, I HATE dresses, the color pink and I would never ever ever wear make up! Been that way since I was a baby, playing with my brothers toys and not being “into dolls”! Geez....according To this clip.... I guess I am really a boy! 🤦‍♀️😡

I love the fact that these kids are lucky enough to have parents who are unconditionally supporting their children, but there is nothing wrong with boys who love pink, sparkles and other "feminine" things/toys. They can love this stuff and still be boys! I just can't wrap my head around a toddler liking these things and parents saying the child is transgender. Parents have a lot of influence on their developing minds and if they are treated like the opposite gender than that is what they may choose to do/feel. These kids will have a very rough road ahead. If this is the way they truly think then they need their parents to help them deal with the hostility they will face from other kids/adults. People can be very cruel.

it’s so heartwarming to see children just have fun and be themselves❤️ they are also so lucky to have such supportive families that are willing to be educated instead of suppressing their children’s feelings❤️ i just hope these kids have access to really good therapy that will help them get through their struggles of feeling different, and also have experts help them thoroughly understand the concept of transitioning in order to make the right decision at such a young age..

I love the camp concept!! I think it would be an even better idea to invite a doctor(s) for a day or have pamphlets available. There has to be many questions and concerns that these families have about the hormone blockers and future life altering treatments. Awesome idea otherwise! I hope that the future of these young ladies is everything they desire!!

I don’t see any strong parental guidance skills to raise these kids... Neither I see a source of external psychological support. The parent’s are just trying to figure out by themselves what to do with their children, obviously afraid of not making them “happy”. Why not seek expert advice and encourage the kids to leave their options open until they are mature enough to fully understand whom they choose to be? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Nobody - ABSOLUTELY NOBODY - is mentally mature at 12 years old to carry the weight of such decision.

I personally believe that believing your child is trans at that young age is wrong. Many cases where kids just like the opposite of stereotypical gender items turn out to just be that; kids liking the opposite of what is considered normal. Now Im not saying non of these kids are trans, but I wouldn't make up my mind when my kid was two.

Awesome parents. Everyone should support their children. Love them unconditionally. If they follow through with medical transition good for them. If they change their minds later, also good for them! They are learning who they are and exactly what they want in a supportive environment that makes their own choices 100% OK. No fear of being disowned. No crippling desire to die to escape a body they feel trapped in and get attacked for their feelings. This is beautiful

Just a friendly reminder that you can very much be a girl and still very feminine without being into make up too much. If you're interested in it and just aren't sure how to do it, explore! Creativity has no room for looking silly or "not doing something right" and you're also pretty because you're you! I'm sure you're beautiful. As I was growing up the best thing I learned and came to terms with is just being yourself is enough and you can be comfortable and confident in your own skin no matter what

You can't be born in the wrong body, you have an xx or xy chromosome (some other variations for genetic DISEASES) but sex: female or sex: Male. Genders are created by us as a human, there are many ranges and different types of genders. YOU CANNOT be born in the wrong body, that is called a mental illness just like depression, schizophrenia, anxiety which can all be treated. If your Son or Daughter feels more feminine thats how they are developed but to allow them to try and change their physical sex is not right. Its abuse and mutilation , and should be frowned upon.

Because if you gay your not sitting there knowing you really a female when you were born into a male body(and vice versa), have always felt like a female or male no matter what. Also wishing you had a vagina instead of a penis or penis instead of a vagina. If your gay/lesbian your physically and sexually attracted to the same sex. I'm into females but in no way do I feel as I was born in the wrong body, and am really a male. I knew I was attracted to females around 3rd grade. Now I have a niece who's been transitioning since they were young, and from the time they were a toddler she knew and everyone else just knew she was indeed a female not a male as she were born.

@@malinachainey1564 i get the identifying more with a certain gender but i dont think little kids should be looking at their genitals as anything more than something they pee out of. i know i barely even recognized my genitals as a kid, they were just there whatever part of my body. its creepy to me that kids are even thinking about that as it relates to sex and 'wanting a penis' instead of a vagina. or vice versa. can understand it in trans people who have actually reached an age of maturity but when i hear about little kids trying to chop off their penises, etc... i cant help but think theres some sort of sexual abuse going on. which can also cause gender confusion as it related to trauma. i dont know. whole things weird to me.

@@ariannasantina if you were born with a deep feeling that your body isn't right and that your parts are not the ones you are supposed to have- then maybe you WOULD understand. The only thing you've said is that you only understand what it means to be cisgender. And that's fine. But force yourself to understand that there are people who don't have the same perspective that you do. Just like some people are deaf, some have one leg, some gave selective mutism, some have to use a wheelchair... There are some people who are born with the wrong genitals - thier bodies don't match who they are. That's how simple it is.

@@EvansFamilyLegoProject i can totally get behind feeling off. when i was younger (and even now, but i went more the non-binary route than the full on trans route b/c i realized i dont really completely relate or "feel" male either, even if i wanted to be when i was younger)... (so dont just assume MY gender, how about that? ) but for me it was never related to my GENITALS specifically at least not until i got older and hit puberty and then everything just felt way wrong (refused to wear a bra, hated being forced into womens undergarments etc and just hated everything, wanted to wear boys jeans, stole my brothers clothes and mostly just hung out with my brother jumping off roofs of abandoned houses for fun and running around in the woods (not to be stereotypical but essentially 'boy activies (ie the activities that the boys were doing as opposed to hanging out with the girls my age instead) so i can totally get behind the transgender experience and am not downplaying it at all and would never want to make anyone feel that way... im just saying when i was THAT young i dont remember ever thinking about my actual GENITALS and to me its always weird when that comes up, tho ive noticed it in SOME but not all trans kids. like not ALL trans kids want to cut their genitals off or even have that much genital awareness. its usually more of an identifying and a FEELING (and yes that misalignment of what you FEEL you should be and what you ARE can be very serious and very distressing) but i just wonder what brings about THAT level of genital awareness to the point where they want to chop it off THAT young. im just saying kids are generally a bit more sheltered from those kinda thoughts. i hope that clarifies at least a little bit since i wasnt trying to put anyone down or make them feel less than

I absolutely HATE the comments when they mention colours or toys, as if "you are not who you are, you just like different stuff". Being born female and identifying as a WOMAN, I love blue and very "tomboy" stuff, but never have I ever believed I was a boy. For these children to be brave enough to show their concerns, with their own choices (sorry for y'all, society has a norm and they verse it in colours or toys, and that's our own fault), but deep down just adressing who they are.. that's brave. IF IT WEREN'T THEY WOULDN'T GO THOUGH SO MUCH HARRASMENT FROM PEOPLE WHO TALK JUST LIKE IN THE COMMENTS. Let them be, and if you ask yourself if it is right or wrong, just do some research on gender identity and when it develops. For all those people in the video: KUDOS. You have all my support.
